Thesis, Earlham School of Religion, 2001. e are greatly indebted to Paul Buckley for making so much Wof Elias Hicks available in the past ten years. There are many reasons to be thankful for Paul’s publications. His editing work is meticulous, as he works from the original manuscripts wherever possible. His commentary on Hicks, mostly in footnotes, is concise and clear. Where he has included maps and images (mostly line drawings of Quaker meetinghouses), as in his edition of Hicks’ Journal, the illustrations are attractive and a significant aid in elucidating material in the text. -

QUAKER STUDIES 12/2 (2008) [196-215] ISSN 1363-013X 'WHAT THEY SEEK FOR IS IN THEMSELVES': QUAKER LANGUAGE AND THOUGHT IN EIGHTEENTH- AND NINETEENTH-CENTURY AMERICAN LITERATURE* James Peacock Keele University, Keele, England ABSTRACT This paper argues that Quakerism was an important influence on a number of eighteenth- and nineteenth-century American writers. Looking at the work of, amongst others, Charles Brockden Brown, Robert Montgomery Bird, Ralph Waldo Emerson and John Greenleaf Whittier, it demonstrates that both the stereotyped depiction of Quakers and the use of Quaker ideas, such as the inward light in literature of the period, helped writers tackle some of the paradoxes of democracy in a young nation. The perceived mystery of Quaker individualism is used in these texts first to dramatise anxiety over the formation ofAmerican 'character' as either fundamentally unique and unknowable or representative of the whole nation, and secondly for more constructive ends in order to create a language able to express unity in diversity. -

Donald Brooks Kelley VILLANOVA UNIVERSITY FRIENDS AND NATURE IN AMERICA: TOWARD AN EIGHTEENTH-CENTURY QUAKER ECOLOGY IT is the contention of Donald Worster, Nature's Economy, that ecological attitudes predated "ecology" in America and had their impact upon life and environment long before the study of species in their natural habitat emerged as a science in the second half of the nineteenth century. Historians are now in the process of reconstructing what Worster has called "the roots of ecology" in the early modern period. Ecological attitudes of the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries in America appear multifaceted, not monolithic. Religious attitudes, as much as anything, seem to have shaped these various human approaches to nature. Thus, the human assessment of self in relationship to nature emerged, for many, through the refractive lens of theology. It is the contention of this paper that "tender" and "savory" Quakers of the eighteenth century in America-that is, those most dedicated to the Christian ethos of their religion-formulated a distinctive ecology at some variance with the prevailing environmental opinion of their day.' Friends such as John Woolman (1721-1772), Anthony Benezet (1713- 1784), John Churchman (1705-1775), Joshua Evans (1731-1798), and John Hunt of West Jersey (1740-1824) lent themselves to the religious- ly-inspired movement for Quaker withdrawal from Pennsylvania poli- tics after 1756. They cleansed themselves from the dross of worldly concerns so as to immerse themselves in the joys of mystical communion with God in their meeting houses for worship. From the centrality of this mystical experience, they radiated love to all of oppressed and despised humanity and even to the more vulnerable beasts in the world of nature.2 257 258 PENNSYLVANIA HISTORY For eighteenth-century Friends, love of God and benevolence toward all his creatures lay at the heart of man's moral responsibility to himself and to his world. -

Introduction + 132 pages, ISBN 978-0-9834980-9-4 (paperback), 978-0-9834980-8-7 (hardcover). Paul Buckley has recently edited excellent critical editions of The Journal of Elias Hicks and of a selection of Letters and Essays of Elias Hicks. These volumes were extensively discussed in issue number 119 of Quaker Religious Thought . He has followed these up with a brief summary of Hicks’ life and an interpretation of Hicks’ thought in The Essential Elias Hicks. These three books add up to a monumental contribution to our understanding of a critical period in Quaker history; they should be read by everyone who has a serious interest in figuring out what Quakerism is all about and how it has come to be what it is today. -

cL/f cF(esponse to Orthodoxy: The Hicksite ^Movement In the Society of Friends HE most striking characteristic of the 1827 Hicksite-Ortho- dox Separation in the Society of Friends is its complexity. TThat complexity has, however, frequently been obscured by the sheer drama of the struggle between Elias Hicks and the Phila- delphia elders. Regardless of the importance of that struggle, it is, perhaps, time to look at the Separation from a more analytical view- point. Hopefully, this kind of approach will provide new insights into the Separation and will place it more meaningfully within the history of Quakerism and early nineteenth-century America. The major weakness of the narrative approach to the Separation is in its tendency to overemphasize the role of Elias Hicks. Thus, the story of Hicks and the elders becomes the basis for understanding the Separation as a whole. Hicks appears to be the focal point of the schism and his ideas seem to form the basis for the Hicksite move- ment. This narrative approach presents only partial truths. The Hicksite movement was not the result of unified support for Elias Hicks but rather grew out of a revulsion to the ideas and activities of Orthodox leaders in Philadelphia. It was the Orthodox leaders who provided the dynamic factor in the Separation, not Elias Hicks. Any endeavor to understand the Hicksites must, then, begin with an examination of the nature of the challenge presented by the de- velopment of Orthodoxy. Orthodox Friends were in fact not orthodox in their Quakerism. The label is an anomalous one which tradition has assigned to a group which sought to alter Quaker belief and prac- tice. -
