    Summer 2010 Pritzker Family Pledges $10 Million to Maintain Access for Needy Chicago Students BY MONIQUE JOHNSON The Pritzker family of Chicago, founders of the Hyatt hotel group, has pledged $10 million to help Chicago-area students who attend Stanford. The university will use the gift to create a scholarship fund dedicated to supporting students from the Chicago region who come to the university with considerable financial need. The gift is timely. As families struggle with the impact of the recession, the need for financial aid has grown. Nearly half of Stanford undergraduates now depend on scholarships from the university, up from 40 percent prior to the recession. And while the university’s financial aid budget has doubled in the last five years, endowment losses have sharply reduced available resources. In fact, the university currently faces a significant shortfall between scholarship endowment funding and student need. The Pritzker Scholars Fund will help close that gap by providing an infusion of support to cover a portion of the financial aid typically awarded to needy students from Chicago. The gift represents a key commitment to the university’s redoubled scholarship fundraising efforts. The Stanford Challenge goal for endowed scholarships now sits at $300 million—three times the target at the outset of the campaign. “Our family believes firmly in the transformative value of higher education,” says Penny Pritzker, JD/MBA ’84, a Chicago business executive. “Scholarships are a powerful way to level the playing field for promising students with financial need. It’s our way of giving back to the community by inspiring Chicago students to reach their highest potential.” Currently, one-third of the 90-plus undergraduate students from the Chicago region who receive need-based aid from Stanford are from families earning less than $60,000 a year—qualifying them for full support under the university’s financial aid program.

Health educators and other public health professionals, however, still develop interventions that focus mainly on “downstream” behavioral risks. Three factors explain the difficulty in translating this knowledge into practice. First, in their allegiance to the status quo, powerful elites often resist upstream policies and programs that redistribute wealth and power. Second, public health practice is often grounded in dominant biomedical and behavioral paradigms, and health departments also face legal and political limits on expanding their scope of activities. Finally, the evidence for the impact of upstream interventions is limited, in part because methodologies for evaluating upstream interventions are less developed. To illustrate strategies to overcome these obstacles, we profile recent campaigns in the United States to enact living wages, prevent mortgage foreclosures, and reduce exposure to air pollution. We then examine how health educators working in state and local health departments can transform their practice to contribute to campaigns that reallocate the wealth and power that shape the living conditions that determine health and health inequalities.

As further confirmation, Pritzker resigned abruptly from the Windy City’s school board late last week. The crony fix seems to be in. Taxpayers, beware. Pritzker is a deep-pocketed doyenne with a family history of dodging taxes — or siphoning them away from the public for her own family’s gargantuan private gain. If you want to see how she’ll oversee a $10 billion government agency, look at her own wealth redistribution record. Most notoriously, Pritzker headed up subprime lender Superior Bank. Even after it went under in 2001 and left 1,400 mostly poor and minority customers destitute, Pritzker was pushing to expand its toxic subprime loan business. As I’ve reported previously, Pritzker and her family escaped accountability by forking over a discounted $460 million settlement over 15 years after the bank collapsed. One of the Obamas’ oldest Chicago friends and an intimate confidante of Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel, Pritzker served as a top national finance chairwoman and bundler for the 2008 presidential campaign.
