Maria Taylor (US) På Intåg 2007-03-27 16:55 CEST Maria Taylor (US) på intåg 19 maj – Stockholm, Debaser / Fritz’s Corner 20 maj – Malmö, Debaser 21 maj – Köpenhamn, Loppen Support på samtliga gig: Boy Omega Maria Taylor känd från bl.a. • When the President Talks to God: a Rhetorical Criticism of Anti-Bush Protest Music
WHEN THE PRESIDENT TALKS TO GOD: A RHETORICAL CRITICISM OF ANTI-BUSH PROTEST MUSIC Megan O'Byrne A Thesis Submitted to the Graduate College of Bowling Green State University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of MASTER OF ARTS December 2008 Committee: Michael L. Butterworth, Advisor Lara Martin Lengel Ellen W. Gorsevski ii ABSTRACT Michael L. Butterworth, Advisor Anti-war protest music has re-emerged onto the American songscape since the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001 and the resulting military conflicts in Iraq and Afghanistan. This study works to explicate the ways in which protest music functions in the resultant culture of war. Protest music, as it reflects and creates culture, represents one possible site of productive change. Chapter 1 examines Ani DiFranco’s song “Self Evident” which was written as an immediate reaction to 9/11. Throughout this chapter I argue that protest music has the potential to work as a vehicle for consciousness raising. In Chapter 2 I consider the constitutive elements in the Bright Eyes song “When the President Talks to God.” Performed on The Tonight Show in May 2005, this song represents one of the first performances of dissent on national television after 9/11. This chapter also examines the limitations of Charland’s conception of the constituted public as it pertains to diverse and heterogeneous audiences. Ultimately, I argue that consciousness raising through music has the potential to bring listeners into the constituted subject position of those who dissent against war. iii Dedicated to the memory of Dr. Lewis (Lee) Snyder in whose shadow I will always walk.

  • For Immediate Release
For Immediate Release RUBY THE RABBITFOOT INVITES LISTENERS TO HER DIVORCE PARTY; NEW ALBUM OUT AUGUST 12 ON NORMALTOWN RECORDS BEWITCHING VIDEO FOR “BEACH FLOWERS” PREMIERES VIA THE FADER LOS ANGELES, CA – June 9, 2016 – An album thick with joyous beats, infectious melodies and lyrics that spin disappointment and desolation into revelatory moments, Ruby The Rabbitfoot’s Divorce Party, will be released August 12 on Normaltown Records. Produced by Andy LeMaster (Bright Eyes, Azure Ray) and inspired by intense heartbreak, the record is a celebration of life after loss, and the creative renewal that comes from finding light amongst the darkness. Ruby’s vivid world stretches far beyond just the songs – from videos that straddle the line of performance and art, to her fearless use of fashion, to the music itself, which serves as the thrilling, creative center to her unique universe. The enigmatic video for album opener “Beach Flowers” encapsulates this perfectly. Directed by frequent collaborator, visual artist/photographer Natalie Neal, the gorgeously shot video, which premiered via The Fader today, features Ruby donned in gothic fashion, dancing in the ocean waves, buried to her neck in sand and casting spells. ADD FADER QUOTE Ruby will bring the Divorce Party to cities all across America and is currently finalizing the routing for early fall. A handful of dates, beginning in Nashville on August 11, were recently announced. Dates are below. “Beach Flowers” signifies a new direction for Ruby, one that is thick with unusual percussion, shimmering synth licks and ethereal orchestration courtesy of a more experimental approach to instrumentals.

  • Omaha's Culture Club
March 25, 2007 THE TALK Omaha’s Culture Club By KURT ANDERSEN When I tell people I’m originally from Omaha, they often confuse it with Oklahoma or Iowa. “Omaha,” a Manhattan photographer I met the other day said. “That’s near Nebraska, isn’t it?” Omaha is one of those ultimate flyover places, an urban Podunk so vaguely situated in coastal Americans’ mental maps that the mere mention of it can actually halt conversation. Sometimes I rattle off the names of movie stars from Omaha: Fred Astaire, Henry Fonda, Marlon Brando, Nick Nolte. Of course, this pantheon also implies that it is a place that requires its most exciting citizens to move on. Since Warren Buffett has become a household name, though, the city acquired a somewhat perverse new brand identity as an extraordinarily ordinary city where the most brilliant American investor and second-richest man in the country chooses to live, of all places! For the past three decades, I’d returned to Omaha once every year or two strictly to visit my parents, so my experience of the city had been pretty much limited to drives to and from the airport. But around 2003, I started hearing from New Yorkers that a kind of cultural awakening was afoot in my hometown. Omaha? It isn’t yet Seattle or Austin, but it’s no longer some kind of Great Plains version of Hartford or Fresno, either. “Alternative” and “independent” aren’t just marketing catchwords in Omaha. The blossoming is real and multifarious. It didn’t happen overnight. And it certainly didn’t happen as a result of any grand master plan by the city establishment.
