In the past glorious 39 years we have been concentrating our efforts on bringing radical change and development in the society, with a focus on poverty alleviation and social inclusion of women. Badlao foundation has continued to expand its projects in the areas of women entrepreneurship, literacy, skill development, health, and livelihood etc. The consistent and unyielding efforts of all the members of the Badlao team form the bedrock of our work. These efforts however would not have been possible without the continued support of all our funding partners, to whom we extend our heartfelt gratitude. ANNUAL REPORT 2019-2020 President’s Message

For more than three decades, Badlao has provided humanitarian and development assistance for the marginalized communities of Santhal Parganas in Jharkhand. We provide assistance in the areas of health, food security, clean water, the environment, education, poverty alleviation, governance, and emergency aid, among others. We have worked to ensure that tribal women are immunized, people have clean drinking water, crops don’t wither from drought, and the sick and vulnerable are given health care. During the year, we organized different seminars and workshops

It gives me immense pleasure to present to you the Annual report for 2019-2020 of Badlao Foundation. I must acknowledge the contribution of all the stakeholders including the Board of Trustees and the Badlao management team for their constant support in the growth of Badlao Foundation. I am thankful to the Field Management Teams for their support and active participation with the community to bring about change and transformation in our society. In the thematic areas of Governance, Health, Education and Nutrition, and Natural Resource Development and Promotion of Livelihood, we have continued to work continuously for improving the well being of the communities in the different districts of SanthalPargana.

We hope, in the coming year, to move ahead with new plans and new enthusiasm and face every new challenge. We hope to be successful in our endeavor, making the coming year, more fruitful and memorable than the previous ones.

ANNUAL REPORT 2019-2020 EXECUTIVE SUMMARY

This annual report covers progress on the Badlao program between April 2019 to March 2020. The overall goal of foundation is to increase poor women and small holder farmer productivity and empowerment in agriculture systems. All of our projects build on and are inspired by the vital roles that women play around the world in small holder agriculture, meeting the food and nutrition needs of their households and contributing to economic development. The vision of the organisation is to empower women in every aspect of life for their contributions to achieving secure and resilient livelihoods and sustainable futures for their households, communities and beyond. This is being achieved by promoting

ealthy diet is essential for health and to protect one from chronic diseases. In order to achieve the Hsustainable development goal it’s important to care about the health and drink clean water to remain healthy. This requires action to improve the surroundings and sanitation, imparting gender education and improving the quality education in the community. By protecting good health, we can achieve the goal of removing poverty and zero hunger.

Malnutrition is a condition that results from eating a diet in which one or more nutrients are either not enough or are too much such that the diet causes health problems. Badlao foundation promotes backyard their own food. This provides them the requisite nutritional value also. 1.1. AWAKENING FOR ZEROHUNGER : CINI . The CINI is providing support for the project – Awakening for zerohunger. The project is working in 20 villagesin Jamtara Districtfor implementation of Food security act and addressing the issue of malnutrition in Children.

ll People are getting knowledge about locally grown vegetables.

ll Previously they used to sell their vegetables and others animals but after conducting those meeting they are able to understand the importance of consuming these locally available vegetables in their homes .

ll Women (pregnant women and lactating mother) now have better knowledge on different entitlements by the government.

ll The adolescent girls who participate in these meetings have become proactive and are more conscious about their diet.

1.2. UMANG PROJECT. ICRW is providing support for the UMANG project. This is being implemented in 81 villages for reducing the incidence of Child marriage. The goal to reduce the prevalence of child marriage is the idea and concept of ICRW Umang project which is being ongoing in the Jamtara and with 15000 adolescent girls (10 to 18 years) in total 81 villages.

The main objective of working with the Tribals in the undulating region of Jharkhand was to restore ecological balance by harnessing, conserving and developing degraded natural resources such as soil, vegetative cover and water. With the help of Integrated Watershed Management ProgrammeBadlao Foundation has taken up the activity of combating soil erosion. The activities under NRM component consists of Community Mobilization; Land and Water Resource Development and Productivity Enhancement

ll Construction of 4 new ponds (100’x100’x10’) for those farmers who was unable to do agriculture in hilly and barren land. Among those ponds some pond has high water level and now farmers are ready to do agriculture. They are also using the pond for other purposes.

ll We made 6 Dobah in Littipara and 17 Dobah in Masaliya (60’x60’x10’) for those farmers who have the knowledge of cultivation but due to unavailability of water in their village they are not able to cultivate.

ll Now a day we are motivating those farmers to do Kharif as well as Rabi crops. Under watershed development fund, money is transferred to the framers from the community for sustainable agriculture. JTDS JHARKHAND TRIBAL DEVELOPMENT SOCIETY – JTELP, JAMTARA, - The JTELP project is the Jharkhand government funded project tobe implemented in the tribal areas. Under Badlao Foundation, total 35 villages are under JTDS project. The activity under community mobilization component include:

ll Promotion of Self Help Groups (SHGs) and Youth Groups (YGs);

ll Building the capacity of Community Resource Persons (CRPs), GramSabha Project Execution Committees and staff of FNGOs and JTDS; and

ll Special support to PTGs to enable them to access their entitlements. This is the basic building block of the project as community mobilization for preparing Gram Sabha Resource Management and Livelihood Plans (GSRMLPs) is carried out with the participation of SHGs

The physical activities to be taken up under this component are to be delineated in a Gram Sabha and the rest of the activities sequentially follow finalization of GSRMLPs. Resource Management and Livelihood Plan (GSRMLP) prepared for each village with the support of the TSAs and FNGOs. This component encompasses four sub-components, namely: (i) Support for Income Generating Activities to PTGs, landless and artisan households: (ii) Introducing market-oriented farm and forest-based production activities by providing integrated production and marketing support; (iii) Vocational training; and (iv) Innovative interventions.

ll Earlier 159 tribal and forest dependent of 22 villages out of 35 have received the claim over 93.86 acre of the area. Along with this the earlier villages from where IFR was applied with our intervention 175 people from 12 villages received 151.71 acre of land.

Organizational development: Improving the effectiveness and performance of the organization has been a challenging task for the organization. BADLAO Foundation has since the beginning given importance to the organizational development work with the changing aspects as per the circumstances. Understanding the importance of organization development Badlao has been moving ahead with all its measures and ideas to improve the performance and the effectiveness of functioning of the organization. Since the establishment of the Badlao foundation, the core team management has come together to share their views and move ahead to improve the platform and develop and adopt the new changing pattern of organizational development to boost up the entire team and provide a new energy with new challenge and work style.

ll In order to keep the ongoing working process smooth and up to date Badlao keeps on updating the FCRA, TDS and other legal documents which is very important aspect for the proper functioning of the organization. In the past last year Badlao taken an initiative called Fundraising which depends on need based form the community and send it to different funding organisation.

Human Resource Development BADLAO Foundation has always been moving ahead with the idea of equality and equal participation in both organizational and team development activities. The women participation in the organization shows the basic idea of Badlao foundation of bringing women in the streamline and places them in forward position in the administration and different project works. Case Study -1: Awareness of Malnutrition HalodiMurmulives in Netaidih village about 12kms away from . There is no General Hospital or Maternity Home nearby.

After delivery her son was declared as a case of low birth weight due to lack of nutrition. The child was not growing and thriving. Our project AWAZ -CINI team facilitator motivated them for taking her Child in MTC. We educated the mother in understanding the cause malnutrition and the remedies for it. They have now agreed to take their child to MTC for treatment.

Case Study-2: Awareness of Women’s Group for Thrift and Credit Group name: PhuloJhano Women’s Group, Saharpura

Case Study-3: One Significant Change Story Suderpahari village in Godda district is located 1.5km

this village. With the help of Oxfam India, Badlao foundationaway from theworking block office.on forest The rightblock andis named livelihood after issues among the community. Indigenous and non indigenous people are live in sunderpahari village. There are a total of 153 families in the village. Of these there are 26 indigenous families and 126 non indigenous families. Total population of the village is 690. In this village Sushila Besra w/o Sunil Hembram stays together. There are 12 members in their family. In addition Badlao Foundation has launched a patal plate unit in collaboration with Oxfam India. In this unit 13 women are associated with patal plate making. The unit was established in the month of July. Thus unit is run by Sushila Besra. A total number of 35900 patal plates have been made from July to December 2018. 35130 have been earned from this unit. After seeing that this unit earns a good amount from their pattal plate the man who bought plates give them a dona making machine. From that machine the unit makes almost 2000 dona. Now the members of the unit are making a lot of plates together. They are very excited and happy to get the machine from the buyer. Since then Badlao has been established contacts with the market. For which after production they no longer worry fro sell. In this way this unit is successfully making the patal plates.

Badlao foundation has set a goal of sustainable Development approach and have focused an approach towards need based development activities.As Badlao Foundation focus will be on sustainable Development approach including circular Agriculture practice, for food security, natural resource management etc.

The future plan focuses to foster the development based work to uplift and improve the living standard of people.

ll In order to engage people in the activities skill development work, and youth entrepreneurship work is also being planned to give opportunities to the youth.

ll Badlao foundation will be moving ahead to work in the livelihood sector as it will be great challenge after this pandemic situation to provide employment to the workers.

ll Building up of entrepreneurs from the community and market linkage work will be another important future plan Badlao will head forward with.

Activity done by Badlao foundation during this pandemic situation: Introduction: The 21-day lockdown, beginning March 25, led a reverse migration with workers leaving cities and going back to their villages as industries were shut and paying house rent or taking care of basic needs became a challenge, apart from health concerns. Globally the spread of COVID 19 infection has created an alarming situation. The risk of spread is real for India also. The Government of India has announced a series of containment measures like message of social distancing, contact tracing and isolation and nation- wide lock down and curfew.

Operational area: The operational area of Badlao Foundation is 81 villages of Jamtara and Nala block which comes under pandemic situation providing services to the society.
