Sad news came last year with the death of Dr Ann Soutter FRSA (Modern Languages, 1953). Everybody who met and spent time with her will have fond memories of Ann. She was utterly dedicated to the College throughout the entirety of her life, and had been elected by Governing Body as a Distinguished Friend of the College. She is deeply missed. He’s the picture of puzzlement, of indecision. Dressed in black, he clasps a skull in one hand and scratches his head with the other. But the skull he’s contemplating is that, not of “poor Yorick”, but rather of Syria, and behind him we see a landscape of death and desolation: the bombed- out shells of tower blocks and a grotesque mound of human skulls that rises out of view, as if without end. The image I’ve just described is a political cartoon by Peter Schrank (fig. 1), published in the Independent on Sunday in 2013. At that time, the increasingly internecine civil war in Syria had escalated into a full-blown international incident and a humanitarian crisis, but President Obama remained uneasy about the United States intervening in the conflict (though he would finally offer military aid to the anti-government rebels). Set in the heart of the gorgeous New Forest, this Data Science Symposium organised by the University of Southampton brings together a multi-institutional, high-profile panel of speakers to promote the cross-fertilisation of ideas between the different domains of Data Science and discuss the prospects of this emerging field in the near future. This event is financed through the EPSRC Institutional Sponsorship grant ‘Southampton Data Science’.

The framework captures 1) how engagement with OER manifests itself in people’s behaviours and attitudes in various stages of progression from novice to expert users and 2) what factors impinge on a person’s engagement with OER. In this paper we apply the framework retrospectively to the disciplinary context of language teaching. This exercise has two aims. First, we use the framework to assess the degree to which teachers at the Department of Languages, The Open University, UK, have engaged with OER reuse following the introduction of LORO, a departmental open repository of teaching materials for languages.

FOREWORD 2016/17 has been a memorable year for the country and for our University. In the ever-changing and deeply uncertain world around us, the University of Oxford continues to attract the most talented students and the most talented academics from across the globe. They convene here, as they have always done, to learn, to push at the frontiers of knowledge and to improve the world in which we find ourselves. One of the highlights of the past twelve months was that for the second consecutive year we were named the top university in the world by the Times Higher Education Global Rankings. While it is reasonable to be sceptical of the precise placements in these rankings, it is incontrovertible that we are universally acknowledged to be one of the greatest universities in the world. This is a privilege, a responsibility and a challenge. Other highlights include the opening of the world’s largest health big data institute, the Li Ka Shing Centre for Health Information and Discovery, and the launch of OSCAR – the Oxford Suzhou Centre for Advanced Research – a major new research centre in Suzhou near Shanghai. In addition, the Ashmolean’s success in raising £1.35 million to purchase King Alfred’s coins, which included support from over 800 members of the public, was a cause for celebration. The pages that follow detail just some of the extraordinary research being conducted here on perovskite solar cells, indestructible tardigrades and driverless cars.

    Spectatrices: Moviegoing and Women’s Writing, 1925-1945 Nolan Gear Submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy under the Executive Committee of the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences COLUMBIA UNIVERSITY 2021 © 2021 Nolan Gear All Rights Reserved Abstract Spectatrices: Moviegoing and Women’s Writing, 1925-1945 Nolan Gear How did cinema influence the many writers who also constituted the first generation of moviegoers? In Spectatrices, I argue that early moviegoing was a rich imaginative reservoir for anglophone writers on both sides of the Atlantic. Coming to cinema from the vantage of the audience, I suggest that women of the 1920s found in moviegoing a practice of experimentation, aesthetic inquiry, and social critique. My project is focused on women writers not only as a means of reclaiming the femininized passivity of the audience, but because moviegoing offered novel opportunities for women to gather publicly. It was, for this reason, a profoundly political endeavor in the first decades of the 20th century. At the movies, writers such as Jessie Redmon Fauset, Zora Neale Hurston, H.D., Dorothy Richardson, and Virginia Woolf developed concepts of temporary community, alternative desire, and discontinuous form that they then incorporated into their literary practice. Where most scholarship assessing cinema’s influence on literature is governed by the medium-specificity of film, my project emphasizes the public dimension of the movies, the fleeting and semi-anonymous intimacy of the moviegoing audience. In turning to moviegoing, Spectatrices opens new methods of comparison and cross-canonical reorganization, focusing on the weak social ties typified by moviegoing audiences, the libidinal permissiveness of fantasy and diva-worship, the worshipful rhetoric by which some writers transformed the theater into a church, and most significantly, the creation of new public formations for women across different axes of class, gender, and race.

Land Smith 2021 MELS ii Abstract Sina Queyras, in the essay “Lyric Conceptualism: A Manifesto in Progress,” describes the Lyric Conceptualist as a poet capable of recognizing the effects of disparate movements and employing a variety of lyric, conceptual, and language poetry techniques to continue to innovate in poetry without dismissing the work of other schools of poetic thought. Queyras sees the lyric conceptualist as an artistic curator who collects, modifies, selects, synthesizes, and adapts, to create verse that is both conceptual and accessible, using relevant materials and techniques from the past and present. This dissertation responds to Queyras’s idea with a collection of original poems in the lyric conceptualist mode, supported by a critical exegesis of that work.
