666.6... PROCESS OF DEPOSITION OF SEDIMENTS IN THE RIVERS OF THE DISTRICT

Some of the important factors which are responsible for the process of sedimentation in a river basin are :- a) The stage of river(the infant, youth, mature or old stage )

b) Lithology and structures of the upstream region or provenance from where sediments eroded/migrated/travelled. c) Geomorphology and gradient of provenance.

d) Anthropogenic activities such as mining, industrialization and mega engineering projects such as Dam also affects the process of sedimentation.

e) The thickness of the sequence is determined by the depth of the stream channel during flood stage and is related to the size of river itself.

The district forms a part of a Mahanadi basin drained by the Mahanadi and its tributaries viz Mand, Kelo, Kurket, Lath and Kenkamdi. Kelo and Mand are the main rivers which flows through this district. Kelo river originates from the tehsil’s Ludega hills of the district. Flowing direction of Kelo and is almost North to South. In its flow direction these rivers erode out mainely the semiconsolidated sediments (Gondwana) which covers the maximum area of Raigarh district. During its course at some places erosion of granite/gneisses. Deccan traps and intertrappeans also takes place. Mainly these two rivers are responsilble for the sedimentation in the Raigarh district. 777.7... GENERAL PROFILE OF THE DISTRICT

Geomorphologically , the area of the district to the north of Mahanadi River exhibits landforms of low-level structural plateaus, structural plain, pediplain/pediment, denudational hills and valleys and the region of middle and high level plateaus. The younger flood plain(including infilled river beds) delineated along the course of the Mahanadi river. The area of the south of Mahnadi River exhibits landforms of structural hills and valleys, older flood plain, denudational slope, pediment/ pediplain and denudational hills and valleys. Physiographically the district forms a part of a Mahanadi basin drained by the Mahanadi and its tributaries viz Mand, Kelo, Kurket, Lath and Kenkamdi. The general slope of the area to the north and south of Mahanadi River is towards south and north direction respectively. The maximum elevation in the area is 1091m above mean sea level and is seen in the northern most part of the district; while the minimum elevation in the area i.e. 190m above mean sea level seen along the Mahanadi River. 10.10.RAINFALLRAINFALL DATA OF THE DISTRICT (MONTHWISE)

11. GEOLOGY AND MINERAL WEALTH OF THE DISTRICT

The geological formations occurring in the district represent almost all geological events Archean to Quaternary period. The older metamorphites of Chhota Nagpur Gnessic Complex of Archean to Proterozoic (undifferentiated) age occupy the northern, mid-western and southern most part of the district. It comprises meta- sediments, biotite gneiss, granite gneiss, meta-basic and ultrabasic, granodiorite, muscovite granite/gneiss, biotite granite, gneissic granite and tonalite(quartz diorite). The above rock assemblages is indication of large scale remobilisation and wide spread granitisation in the area. Younger granitic plutons, basic dykes, pegmatites and quartz veins are found as intrusive within the metamorphites and Chhattisgarh Supergroup.

The Chhattisgarh Supergroup of rocks of Meso to Neo – Proterozoic age occupy the southern part and represented by Singhora, Chandarpur and groups. The Singhora Group comprises felspathic arenite, arkose, pebble horizon (Rehatikhole Formation) and variegated shale (Saraipali Formation). Chandarpur Group comprises mainly arenite with shale, siltstone, arkose, gritty wacke and conglomerate at the base. Raipur group is represented by the Charmuria, Gunderdehi, Raigarh, Bamandih and Saradih Formation and predominantly comprises an argillite-carbonate sequence with occasional presence of stromatolite at places.

Gondwana Super grup represented by Talchir ,Karharbari ,Barakar and Kamthi Formation occupies the area between the metamorphites in the north and Chhattisgarh Super group in the south. Talchir Formation of Carboniferous to Permian age comprises boulder bed, tillite , sandstone and shale. Karharbari Formation of Permian age comprises sandstone, shale with thin coal seams and pebble bed and exposed in the northen part. Barakar Formation of Permian age comprises arkosic sandstone, shale, fireclay, grit, siltstone and coal seams. The overlying Kamthi Formation of Permian to Triassic age comprises conglomerate, ferruginous to variegated sandstone with argillaceous beds, arenaceous to carboniferous shale, clay beds and coal seams. Lameta Group of Up Cretaceous age is exposed in the northwestern extreme part and comprises limestone, variegated clay and calcareous sandstone.

Deccan Traps of Up cretaceous to Paleocene age represent tholeiitic flows of aphanitic to porphyritic basalts. During the Quaternary period, the area had undergone prolonged weathering/laterisation. As a result, the basaltic flows are transformed partially into discrete bauxite bearing laterite capping in the highland plateau area in the northwestern part of the district.

MMMINERALMINERAL WEALTH OF THE DISTRICT

Raigarh district has huge potential of coal. The other economic mineral reported are clay, limestone, tungusten, and incidences of diamond. The vast potential of coal is reported in Raigarh coalfield and north and south of mand River. A thick zone of white clay occurs over an extensive area at 4km of Purunga and other small deposits occur near Arajhar, Kishnapur, and Parsada. Cement grade limestone deposits occur at Ssrsngarh, Baniapather, Timarlaga- Laladhurva and Jharapdih. Tungsten occurs in the form of Scheelite within tourmalinite bands associated with mica schist and it is reported from the gravel beds of Mahanadi River near the confluence of Mand River.
