TOuRiSm ViRGin ValleY WaTeR diSTRicT Calendar blamed for drop in April visitors By Barbara Ellestad MLN

The Convention and Visi- tors Authority blamed the calendar for April’s flat or falling visitor volumes throughout Clark County, stating there was one fewer weekend day during the month. Mesquite’s visitor count for the month was down 1.2 percent from April 2016 coming in at 123,330. That’s 1,479 people less than a year ago who visited the city. That led to a decline of 4.2 percent in total occupancy rates from 88.5 percent last year to 84.3 percent this year. The av- erage daily room rate also fell 90 cents or 1.5 percent to $60.98. Revenue per avail- able room (RevPAR) also dropped 6.1 percent to $51.41. Last April the RevPAR came in at $54.76. On a positive note, total room nights occupied in Mesquite’s hotels increased Linda Faas > See VISITORS, Page 7A The 10-year-old Flat Top water tank, located at the base of the Flat Top Mesa, will be replaced in the next year to correct deficiencies including cracks and leaks. educaTiOn Board moves to replace Flat Top tank

education JL Bowler developing great leaders

By Teri Nehrenz MLN

When you have a great school leader like Christo- pher Jenkins, you get classrooms full of eager young minds that are going to be trying a lot of new things, all of which will teach them to be better students, children and life participants. Great leaders create great schools and a great school can change the trajectory of a child’s life. JL Bowler Elementary is a great school that is chang- ing lives. The Leader in Me is one of the programs designed to put students on the path to greatness by putting to work the seven habits that form great leaders. This is the first year that Bowler has applied the program. On May 25, students had a chance to show off the leadership habits they’ve learned to apply to their lives each and every day. Stations were set up for guests to visit with students manning the stations to talk about one of the seven principals of leadership and the ways that principal was applied to their school days. Student council members gave short examples of how those habits, when applied, helped them in areas like studies, sports or their recent performance of the Jungle Book at the Smith Center for the Performing Arts. The seven habits they discussed were: Be Proactive- You’re in charge; Begin with the end in mind-Have a plan; Put first things first-Work first, then play; Think win-win-Everyone can win; Seek first to understand, then to be understood-Listen before you talk; Synergize- Together is better and finally, sharpen the saw-Balance feels best. Teri Nehrenz The speeches were followed by a question and answer period. Parents, grandparents and friends asked ques- tions to clarify some of the habits such as Sharpen the Saw. Sharpen the Saw, as it was explained by the stu- dents, means to take care of themselves by exercising, eating and sleeping right.
