2004 annual report

Dear Friends of the Fulcrum Foundation,

In just two years, the Fulcrum Foundation has much to celebrate. This second annual report tells the story of an organization, founded to leverage support for Catholic schools, that distributed $382,800 in tuition assistance and $402,000 to assist schools in need during fiscal year 2004. At the same time, we continue our historic commitments to the Pierce County Association of Catholic Schools (PACE) and to the Rainbow schools of South , while supporting all Catholic schools of the Archdiocese of Seattle.

Building on the successful event Celebration of Light, our annual fundraising has garnered support from donors across the Archdiocese. This report focuses on last year’s recipients of the Archbishop’s Award and on the generosity of one family, who lead by giving through their V. Rev. commitment to Catholic schools. Stephen C. Rowan, Ph.D. This report also features stories about the key components of our mission: to provide tuition assistance for families who cannot afford the full cost of tuition, to provide assistance to schools in need, and to support programs that promote excellence in teaching and faith formation. These stories show that our schools are succeeding because of the faith and dedication of our students, families, teachers, and benefactors.

You will also find inspiring testimonials by Champions of Catholic Education, who spoke at last year’s Celebration of Light. They prove that enthusiasm for Catholic schools in western is widespread and deep. We urge you to reflect on the quotations, which convey a powerful message in a few words.

Finally, if your name is among our “patrons” and financial supporters, Colleen thank you for your support. On behalf of our schoolchildren and teachers, Oglesby we appreciate your generosity. If you want to add your name, please consider joining the family. You will be most welcome!

Sincerely,

V. Rev. Stephen C. Rowan, Ph.D. Colleen Oglesby Chair of the Board Executive Director leveraging support for catholic schools

Like all mothers, Nigisti Waldemichael worries about her children. She was especially concerned about her oldest daughter, Luwam, who was adrift and apathetic at her neighborhood school. Nigisti sought help from everyone she could – the school, her family, neighbors and friends. Although she tried all she could to help, Nigisti was dismayed when Luwam didn’t improve. Finally, Nigisti’s friend, Nancy, recommended Luwam enroll at St. George Parish School in Seattle. Nancy believed Luwam needed personal attention and a greater sense of belonging. She explained to Nigisti that Catholic schools are special in that the whole community – teachers, students, parents, and parishioners – make every effort to help children succeed. Even if they are not Catholic, the families become part of the community. In addition to personal attention, students benefit from high expectations and the challenge to excel that uniquely stems from families, teachers, and the school and parish communities working together for student achievement.

Nigisti and Luwam’s father, Nuguse, left their native Eritrea on the East African coast more than a decade ago and settled in western Washington where they raised their children. The financial commitment of having a child in a Catholic school can be a challenge for most families. With four of their children at St. George, the Waldemichaels rely on tuition assistance. Tuition assistance has helped Luwam and it has also made a difference to the entire family beyond the classroom.

After her first year at St. George, Luwam has shown a marked improvement. In addition to performing better academically, she has been tearing up the track as the school’s newest record holder in sprints. St. George is now a family affair for the Waldemichaels. Nuguse regularly volunteers at Mariner games TION for the school, all four of the school-age children are enrolled, and the three- year-old twins are hoping to attend when they are old enough. South Tacoma is home to a diverse, working-class community. At the heart of this community is Visitation Catholic School. Started by the Benedictine Sisters in 1925, the school welcomed 170 students in its first year. Parents paid a monthly tuition fee of what amounted to the average hourly wage at the time: $1.00. In the 80 years since, the school has graduated nearly 2,300 students and, though much has changed, Visitation has remained a stable influence of Christian values and academic excellence for the community.

In a year that saw Visitation contend with its own survival, the school persevered as an acknowledged alternative to the neighborhood schools. Like all Catholic schools throughout the Archdiocese, Visitation School is distinguished by its ability to provide a personal learning environment where children can grow socially, academically, and spiritually. Children who have been bullied or in other ways are at odds socially or academically in another school are welcomed into a loving, Christian community. Families continually hail Visitation school as a passport to hope for their children who have been failed by other institutions.

The unique importance of Visitation to Tacoma was immediately recognized when the school faced closure this spring. The community rallied to raise the money necessary to keep the school open while making plans to reverse declining enrollment. The Fulcrum Foundation was there, too. In addition to giving Visitation School $40,000, Fulcrum solicited local donors to contribute to the school. Fulcrum assists Pierce County Association for Catholic Education (PACE) in raising funds for schools in Pierce County through its St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Endowment Fund. promoting excellence

“What are our children learning today?”

Video games, television, friends, and neighborhoods can powerfully influence what children learn and what they will grow up to be. Without guidance, these influences can be corrosive on the family and damaging to the child. Catholic schools can be equally powerful in response. Catholic school communities offset detrimental influences through effective teaching in a caring and challenging environment. To support our Catholic schools, the Fulcrum Foundation initiated Teacher and Staff Development Grants to promote excellence in teaching and faith formation. The grants fund the practical application of innovative teaching in the classroom and in the school. This year the Foundation awarded seven grants to teachers and staff in the Archdiocese of Seattle.

At Seattle’s St. Catherine School, Nancy Wilson, Assistant Principal, was awarded a grant to develop “Ethics Across the Curriculum,” a project to engage students in the moral implications of their studies in science, social studies, religion, and language arts. The project was developed in conjunction with the University of San Diego and Seattle Preparatory High School, and it will support St. Catherine’s middle school teachers and six other Catholic grade schools (Assumption-St. Bridget, St. Joseph, and Our Lady of the Lake in Seattle, St. Monica in Mercer Island, and Sacred Heart in Bellevue) to develop their curriculum around ethics.

“Our mission is to graduate students who are recognized for their competence, conscience, and compassion,” explains Mrs. Wilson. “To achieve these expectations, our curriculum must focus on knowledge and skills and on the ethical questions the students encounter as they grow and develop in their critical thinking and decision making.” TION

Students in middle school are eager to explore ethical questions, particularly those relating to their own life experiences. By opening the doors to ethics, students make their own connections to their studies throughout the school day. Moreover, teachers confronted by ethical questions in the classroom have a supportive and structured teaching model to foster learning and development during this formative time in a child’s life. an astounding legacy

“Schools are needed first of all,” wrote Mother Joseph in 1856 to her fellow sisters in Quebec. The founder of the Sisters of Providence of the Sacred Heart recognized the importance of Catholic schools during her first year in the Washington territory. With her four Providence Sisters, Mother Joseph established the first Catholic school, Providence Academy, three decades before Washington was admitted into the union. In the near century and a half that followed, a multitude of religious orders opened schools and taught tens of thousands of children in western Washington. This represents an astounding legacy handed down to today’s Catholics and society in general.

“Americans do not count the cost where education is concerned,” Mother Joseph wrote, “their generosity will help us to maintain our establishments for the poor.” Mother Joseph immediately saw the significance of education to early pioneers. It is that same value that today’s Catholics welcome and support in our schools. Throughout its history, the mission of Catholic schools has been to educate all those who desire a Catholic education. The desire to keep Catholic schools accessible is a commitment of our deepest values. Mother Joseph’s vision - to encourage charitable giving for those most in need - is at the heart of the Fulcrum Foundation’s mission, leveraging support for Catholic schools in the Archdiocese of Seattle.

Fulcrum Foundation’s sole purpose is to continue the legacy of excellent and accessible Catholic schools. Fulcrum ensures that Catholic schools will be available to families throughout the Archdiocese far into the future, by allocating resources where they are needed across the system. Additionally, the Foundation continues to serve the ethnically diverse communities in South Seattle and the Pierce County Association for Catholic Education (PACE), which serves all

TION Catholic schools in Pierce County. The Fulcrum Foundation is committed to increasing its endowment and annual fund raising efforts to ensure continued tuition assistance for families, assistance to schools in need, and grants to promote academic excellence and faith formation. leading by giving

When Jack and Mary McCann met, they knew their lives would be dedicated to serving youth. They agreed on their first date that their children would attend Catholic schools. As a newly married couple, they started the Quest youth retreat program at St. Stephen the Martyr in Renton, eventually recruiting 20 volunteers and serving more than 120 children. “We had planned to work at the parish full-time, but the Holy Spirit intervened,” said Jack. “We continued to volunteer at St. Stephen’s for 10 years and are proud to see the program still thrives today.” Although the Holy Spirit took Jack’s career in a very different direction, Mary and he remain steadfast in their commitment to youth and education.

The McCanns raised seven children and four foster children while continuing their volunteer activities in their parish and the Catholic schools their children attended, including St. Philomena, John F. Kennedy High School, and Jack’s alma mater, O’Dea High School. Devoutly Catholic, Jack and Mary admit, “We don’t wear it on our sleeves; we believe our faith is revealed through how we live our life and that we lead by example.” Their leadership is apparent in their philanthropy. When a stock investment made an unexpected and substantial profit, Jack and Mary let the Holy Spirit guide them. They transferred the stock directly to the Archdiocese of Seattle for the Gift of Faith campaign.

Always trying to lead by example, they joined the Catholic Fund, a group of more than 240 lay leaders and clergy called upon by the late Archbishop Thomas J. Murphy, to steer a significant fundraising campaign, The Gift of Faith. The Gift of Faith Campaign was a major undertaking, raising more than $25 million to serve the critical needs of the Archdiocese of Seattle, especially

TION schools. “Two thousand years ago, Jesus shared the gift of faith with us,” wrote Archbishop Murphy. “It was a gift of His life, death and resurrection. This gift has changed the world.”

With the expectation that a foundation would be established to continue the initiatives started by the Catholic Fund, the Gift of Faith Campaign provided $3.5 million in seed money for an endowment fund to support the ongoing FULCRUM FOUNDA needs of the Catholic schools. In 2002, Archbishop Alex J. Brunett started the Fulcrum Foundation which continues what Jack and Mary and the Catholic 10 Fund began: support for youth and education through strong Catholic schools. philanthropy today

In the two years of its existence, the Fulcrum Foundation has raised more than $1,000,000 through its annual fundraising. This great expression of support for Catholic schools is thanks to more than 1,300 donors who attended the Celebration of Light and contributed to our annual giving in 2003 and 2004. It is through their generosity that Catholic education will remain accessible in western Washington. The cost of tuition is a steep challenge for many families who want to send their children to Catholic school. By leveraging financial support, the Fulcrum Foundation preserves the affordability of Catholic education in diverse communities throughout the Archdiocese.

The Fulcrum Foundation acknowledges the many generous benefactors who keep our schools accessible to families of all income levels. The Celebration of Light is our signature event to distinguish and celebrate the generosity of the Catholic schools community. It is a time when every individual can be honored for their dedication. The evening is also an occasion to recognize outstanding benefactors with the presentation of the Archbishop’s Award.

In 2004, the Archbishop’s Award was presented to four long-standing contributors to Catholic schools: Mike and Mary Jo Tucci have given generously of their time and their talents for many years in the cause of Catholic education. They are provid- ing for the future of Pierce County’s Catholic schools by endowing the Tucci Family Endowment Fund for tuition assistance. Father Tyson has worked tirelessly as pastor for St. Paul, St. Edward and St. George to ensure these three Rainbow schools remain open and vibrant places of learning in diverse and underserved communities. Liz Swift is a passionate advocate for all our Catholic schools. She eagerly TION shares her expertise with fellow teachers, serves as a dedicated board member for many educational institutions, and campaigns for the contin- ued growth of the Fulcrum Foundation.

Central Endowments The Fulcrum Foundation currently manages four central endowments that are restricted to tuition assistance: The Connolly Endowment The Murphy Endowment The Tucci Family Endowment The Wallace Endowment As of June 30, 2004, these endowments totaled $4,083,338.

The return on investment in fiscal year 2004 was 16.25%. Following the policy adopted by the Board of Trustees, five percent of the market value at December 31, 2003 was made available for tuition assistance. Earnings in excess of distributions remains in the endowments, to ensure their growth over time.

Endowment earnings available for distribution in fiscal year 2005: $206,193.

Celebration of Light The 2004 Celebration of Light, held on March 11, attracted nearly 1,000 people in celebration of the Catholic schools community. This event represents the largest part of Fulcrum Foundations’s annual giving campaign.

The Celebration of Light netted $406,529 for the mission of the Fulcrum Foundation.

Donation from the Archdiocese of Seattle Catholic Schools Department From its operating budget, funded by the Annual Catholic Appeal, the Catholic Schools Department designated that $65,000 in assistance to schools in

Hunthausen. The Catholic Schools Department also contributed $150,000 restricted for the use of the three level 1 Archdiocesan high schools: Bishop Blanchet, John F. Kennedy, and O’Dea.

FULCRUM FOUNDA Income from “Fund-an-Item” Program The “Fund-an-Item” program, just in its start-up phase, provided a modest 14 source of income. The program distributes funds donated by one school at its annual auction and designated for another school.

Funds raised through this program totaled $44,005. distributions

Tuition Assistance In the last fiscal year, ending June 2004, the Fulcrum Foundation distributed 696 grants of $550 each in tuition assistance to schoolchildren throughout the Archdiocese. The families of the children receiving assistance had a median income of $24,183.

Total tuition assistance distributed: $382,800*

Assistance to Schools in Need In fiscal year 2004, thirteen schools applied for “Assistance to Schools in Need.” All of these schools were projecting a shortfall in their operating budgets, taking into account school enrollment, support from the parish, and local fundraising efforts. The average application requested $40,000 in assistance. The Fulcrum Foundation was able to distribute to all schools but two at least 60% of the amount requested; three schools received 100% of the requested amount.

Total assistance distributed to schools in need: $402,000

Teacher and Staff Development Grants To promote excellence in Catholic schools and to show support for our teachers and staff, the Fulcrum Foundation accepted applications for incentive grants to improve the curriculum and programs of Catholic schools. Priority was given to initiatives that showed creativity and promised broad results. Seven grants were awarded.

Total of grants distributed to teachers and staff: $10,000

Individual School Endowments The Fulcrum Foundation serves as the umbrella organization for individual school endowments. By combining resources under the Fulcrum Foundation, local schools benefit from the advice and services of Fulcrum’s fund manager, Christian Brothers Investment Services, and enjoy a reduced fund manager’s fee, while retaining discretion to invest their portfolios according to a range of choices.

In Fiscal Year 2004, total value of school endowments invested with the Fulcrum Foundation: $18,852,251
