1 CHAPTER I INTRODUCTION A. Background of the Study People have three basic needs in their live, such as cloth, food, and house. But it will more complete if there is love every day. Without love, people cannot live better, because they cannot share their feeling to the others. Love makes people happy, sad, angry, laugh, and even it can make people cry. In Islam, love has comprehensive view, that is love of Allah, love of Prophet Muhammad, and the last is human love. Musbikin (2002: 30) says that love is sacred. It is given by Allah and priceless. Every person deserves to get love even though he or she has to fight for it. The literature and psychology have close relationship. The psychology discovers the human’s behavior that is influenced by their experience. From the experience of human’s life, it can give inspiration for author to produce a literary work. The novel as part literary work replicates some realities that happen in the human’s life. It is induce the behavior of the character in the novel. DEAR JOHN Nicholas Sparks For Micah and Christine Acknowledgments This novel was both a joy and a challenge to write; a joy because it’s my hope that the characters reflect the honor and integrity of those who serve in the military, and a challenge because . well, to be completely honest, I find that every novel I write is challenging. There are those people, however, who make the challenge that much easier, and without further ado, I’d like to thank them. To Cat, my wife and the woman I love with all my heart. Thanks for your patience, babe. To Miles, Ryan, Landon, Lexie, and Savannah, my children. Thanks for your endless enthusiasm, kids. To Theresa Park, my agent. Thanks for everything. • The Notebook and the Romance Genre an Investigation of the Notebook As a Romance Novel
English Level: G3 Supervisor: Per Sivefors 2EN50E Examiner: Anna Greek 15 credits 4 October 2019 The Notebook and the Romance Genre An Investigation of The Notebook As A Romance Novel Ajla Kapic Kapic 1 Abstract Critics and readers often consider Nicholas Sparks’ novel The Notebook to be a romance novel, while Sparks himself considers it a love story. Sparks claims that there are no similarities between the two genres. Therefore, this paper investigates the differences and similarities between the romance genre and the love story genre, while simultaneously exploring The Notebook’s storyline, the characterization, and the marketing surrounding the book in order to understand the novel’s classification. The purpose is to discover if The Notebook can be identified as a romance even if it never was Sparks’ intention. The only aspect that differs between the genres is how the ending is written, other than that there are no remarkable differences. There are also several elements that validates that The Notebook has romantic features. Both of the protagonists have romance characteristics, the cover of the novel is a characteristic romance cover, and the storyline itself is based on a romance structure and it follows all of the essential romance elements. The conclusion of this paper is that The Notebook has romance elements and therefore can be placed in the romance genre even if that never was Sparks’ intention. Keywords: Characterization, Romance Elements, Literature, Love Story, Novel, Romance, Contemporary Romance, The Notebook, Nicholas

North Carolina Fiction: A Breath of Snow and Ashes by Diana Gabaldon The adventures of Claire and Jamie Fraser continue in Colonial North Carolina on the cusp of the revolution. Claire knows the results, as she did about Colloden, but not the details. Excitement and laughs. Light from Heaven by Jan Karon Reading a Jan Karon book is like visiting old friends and meeting a few new ones. She has a way with words. All of her books are recommended reading. The Last Noel by Michael Malone A great story! I enjoyed it. Catbird by Stephen March A good tightly woven narrative. The author manages to convey the bleakness and the “southerness” without a lot of extraneous wordy sentences. Shooting at Loons by Margaret Maron • So much fun to listen to as we travel to the Outer Banks. All about Harker’s Island and Carteret County. • Good plot – wanted to find out who “dun it.” Southern Discomfort by Margaret Maron Good book – liked reading about places in NC. The Three Mrs. Parkers by Joan Medlicott The first book I’ve read by this author and I found it fast paced. Good character studies. But, does everything always come out fine in the end in her books? I will read more to find out. Christ the Lord – Out of Egypt by Anne Rice A sensitive and believable depiction of Jesus Christ as a child. I felt his presence as I read. Impossible Dreams by Patricia Rice Great read – page turner. Miss Julia Hits the Road by Ann B. Ross Entertaining and funny.

CHAPTER I INTRODUCTION A. Background of the Study Love is a valuable thing in human life. No one does not need love. Every person has their own interpretation about what love is. They have their own description about love. Every person has different understanding about love. Even so they will agree that they need to be loved or love. “Every human being wants to be loved. This is not a wholly incomprehensible statement. With the exception of some people with personality disorders, everyone wants to be loved. The feeling that one experiences, especially when they know that they are loved, is indescribable” (Chapman, 2011: 18). According to Maslow’s hierarchy in Chapman (2011:18). “People have a need for intimate relationships, love, affection, and belonging and will seek to overcome feelings of aloneness and alienation.” Love according to Elkrief, love is complete acceptance, when we let someone to be exactly as they are, without any believe that they aren’t good enough, without any belief that they would be “better” if they were different, this is love. Love is completely unconditional, love has no conditions. Love is a feeling that can be unconditional, no matter what a partner does, feelings toward them do not change (Nicholson, 2011). When we truly love someone, we can’t stop loving them, no matter of what they do or say. If our love is depending on how the other person act, then this love is completely conditional. We often confuse this to be love, but this is just positive thoughts about someone. This is just you like what a person says or does, not loving them.
