PLACE: IFW D 42 INSTRUCTOR OF RECORDS: Prof. Dr. Harald Fischer-Tiné ABSTRACT The primary aim of this course is to enhance the cultural sensitivity of the participants by introducing them to the richly diverse cultural and religious landscape of the Indian sub- continent while at the same time pointing to similarities and commonalities with more familiar western settings. Steering clear of exoticism or rigid cultural relativism, the course is designed to make students reflect on the interrelations between religion and politics and the processes of homogenisation and exclusion that go in tandem with religious commu- nity building. It provides a history of the Sikh religion that emerged as a distinct religious tradition between the early 16th and late 19th century in the north Indian Punjab and is now widely accepted as a “world religion”. This exemplary case study is used to illustrate a broader phenomenon, namely the kind of transformations religious communities undergo when faced with the challenges of modernity. The first part of the course offers a glimpse of the theology and liturgy of Sikhism, and explains why this particular Indian faith that was long perceived as part of Hinduism. The following sessions put the historical develop- ment of a religiously distinct Sikh community under scrutiny — from the days of founder Guru Nanak in the 15th to the multifaceted effects of the global migration of Sikhs in the 20th century and the rise of Sikh separatist terrorism in the 1980 and 90s. -

Parade Procession Guide The 18th annual Surrey Khalsa Day Parade is the largest outside of India This colourful and entertaining procession will be winding its way through the streets of Surrey on Saturday, April 23rd. In total, over 2500 participants representing over 20 community organizations will participate in this celebratory event, with thousands more celebrating this memorable day in roadside booths along the parade route. As part of the spirit of this community celebration, which draws in excess of 200,000 guests from across the region, the roadside booths give away free food and treats to onlookers. Your guide to the 2016 parade procession: 1. Sikh Motorcycle Club Leading off the 2016 parade procession, members of the Sikh Motorcycle Club are participating. The only one of its kind in Canada, the club was established in 2002 and today has over 90 members. In BC, Sikhs are legally allowed to ride motorcycles while wearing a turban according to the Provincial Motorcycle Act. 2. Sikh Band The Sikh marching band has 60 members and plays classic instruments from the Punjab. 3. Canadian Armed Forces This float has six members of the Canadian Forces as well as two Humvees. The Canadian Forces and the Sikh community have a longstanding relationship that dates back over 100 years, and this year’s parade entry is a salute to the Sikh community during this day of celebration. 4. Parshaad (Sikh Food Offering) Parshaad is a traditional Sikh dried sweet that is used as a religious offering. Volunteers from the Gurdwara Dasmesh Darbar Temple will be handing out these sweets to the crowd. -

Although the janamsakhis are not reliable historical sources concerning the life of Guru Nanak, they are beneficial in imparting knowledge upon the time period in which they developed. The representation of women within these sakhis can give us an indication of the general views of women of the time. A lack of representation of women within the janamsakhi supports the argument that women have traditionally been assigned a subordinate role within patriarchal society. -

Men and women of any caste could join the Sangat. The Sangat used to gather to listen to the teachings of Guru Nanak Dev. The Pangat meant taking food in a queue. Everybody was entitled to partake Langar without any discrimination of caste or satatus (high or low). Those two institutions proved revolutionary for the Hindu society. Langar system was introduced by Guru Nanak Dev and Guru Angad Dev expanded it. Guru Angad Dev organized the institution of Sangat more effectively founded by Guru Nanak Dev. The ‘Sangat’ means ‘sitting together collectively’. There was no restriction of any kind in joining the Sangat. All people could take part in it. The Sangat was considered to be a replica of God. The Sangat met every morning and evening to listen to the Bani of Guru Angad Dev. That institution not only brought the Sikhs under one banner but it also helped a lot in the success of Sikh missionary work. Thus, the contribution of the institution of Sangat to the development of Sikhism was extremely great. Guru Nanak Dev started the institution of Langar. Guru Amar Das Ji expanded it greatly. Guru Amar Das declared that no visitor could meet him unless he had taken the Langar. -

Abstract Bhai kahan Singh Nabha( august 30, 1861- November 24, 1938 ) was a great Sikh Scholar. He also known as a encyclopaedist of Punjabi language. He has written approximately 33 books, among which Gurshabad Ratnakar Mahan Kosh is very famous Punjabi dictionary. Its also called the encyclopedia of Sikhism. Because this Kosh has given a lot of information about Sikh History. Other compositions are not directly related to history but these are considered to be reliable source of Sikh history. All of these works will be studied on a historical basis, because Bhai Sahib has presented authentic Sikh History. Keywords : Encyclopedia, Sikh History, Historical, Authentic Bhai Kahan Singh Nabha became Shiromani author of the Sikh History. Who has contributed a great deal in Sikh History by writing Gurshabad ratnakar Mahan Kosh, Gurmat Martand, Hum Hindu Nahi and a number of Granths. Bhai Sahib was born in 1861 AD at Sabazbanera in district Bathinda. Name of his mother was Har Kaur and his father’s name Narayan Singh. He remained alive till 1938 AD. In these 77 years of his life,he served Maharaja Hira Singh and his son Maharaja Ripudaman Singh in the Nabha State and he also served some time in Patiala State. This was that time when the Sikh faith was in danger. -

Authenticity of Standard Version of Dasam Granth: History and its Text in Literature* By: Jasbir Singh Mann M.D. Granths with title as Sri Dasam Granth/or Dasam Patshahi Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji, also known as Standard Version of Dasam Granth has been seen since 1897 AD in Circulation in Title prints with fixed compositions/contents with and arrangement of contents in 1428 pages, which was published after correction of 32 Granths by a Sodhak committee 1896AD and in Print form since 1900AD. Review of Literature shows no such Granth with Title Sri Dasam Granth or Dasmi Patshahi Ka Granth (with fixed pattern of Compositions/contents and arrangement) was seen in Punjab or Delhi area Sikh institutions in 18th century. Indian sources, Persian sources & over 30 European sources were silent about this Granth during 18th Century. In Literature Title “Dasmi Patshahi Granth” was first time reported by Malcolm in 1810 AD (early 19th century). Then onwards in early 19th century, such Granths started appearing in Sikh institutions in Punjab, initially in hand written Birs and then in print form in 19th century. By 1895AD, over 32 versions, with variable patterns of compositions in hand written birs, including six printed versions were available in Punjab. Sodhak committee prepared final standard version in 1897 AD which has been extensively used in literature during 20th century (1900AD-2000AD). This Granth has always remained controversial among scholars and Sikh community and issues of authenticity of its compositions can be traced during Cunningham during Pre-Singhsabha /Singh Sabha period and from 1947AD onwards till 2013. -

How the British divided Punjab into Hindu and Sikh By Sanjeev Nayyar December 2016 This is chapter 2 from the E book on Khalistan Movement published by www.swarajyamag.com During a 2012 visit to Naina Devi Temple in Himachal Pradesh, about an hour's drive from Anandpur Sahib, I wondered why so many Sikhs come to the temple for darshan. The answer lies in the events of 1699. In the Chandi Charitra, the tenth Guru says that in the past god had deputed Goddess Durga to destroy evil doers. That duty was now assigned to him hence he wanted her blessings. So he invited Pandit Kesho from Kashi to conduct the ceremony at the hill of Naina Devi. The ceremony started on Durga Ashtami day, in the autumn of October 1698, and lasted for six months. At the end of this period, the sacred spring Navratras began on 21 March 1699. Then, “When all the ghee and incense had been burnt and the goddess had yet not appeared, the Guru came forward with a naked sword and, flashing it before the assembly declared: ‘This is the goddess of power!” This took place on 28 March 1699, the Durga Ashtami day. The congregation was then asked to move to Anandpur, where on New Year Day of 1st Baisakh, 1699, the Guru would create a new nation.” 3 On 30 March 1699, at Anandpur, Govind Singhji gave a stirring speech to the assembly about the need to protect their spiritual and temporal rights. He then asked if anyone would offer his head in the services of God, Truth and Religion. -
