  • Sebastiano Del Piombo and His Collaboration with Michelangelo: Distance and Proximity to the Divine in Catholic Reformation Rome
SEBASTIANO DEL PIOMBO AND HIS COLLABORATION WITH MICHELANGELO: DISTANCE AND PROXIMITY TO THE DIVINE IN CATHOLIC REFORMATION ROME by Marsha Libina A dissertation submitted to the Johns Hopkins University in conformity with the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy Baltimore, Maryland April, 2015 © 2015 Marsha Libina All Rights Reserved Abstract This dissertation is structured around seven paintings that mark decisive moments in Sebastiano del Piombo’s Roman career (1511-47) and his collaboration with Michelangelo. Scholarship on Sebastiano’s collaborative works with Michelangelo typically concentrates on the artists’ division of labor and explains the works as a reconciliation of Venetian colorito (coloring) and Tuscan disegno (design). Consequently, discourses of interregional rivalry, center and periphery, and the normativity of the Roman High Renaissance become the overriding terms in which Sebastiano’s work is discussed. What has been overlooked is Sebastiano’s own visual intelligence, his active rather than passive use of Michelangelo’s skills, and the novelty of his works, made in response to reform currents of the early sixteenth century. This study investigates the significance behind Sebastiano’s repeating, slowing down, and narrowing in on the figure of Christ in his Roman works. The dissertation begins by addressing Sebastiano’s use of Michelangelo’s drawings as catalysts for his own inventions, demonstrating his investment in collaboration and strategies of citation as tools for artistic image-making. Focusing on Sebastiano’s reinvention of his partner’s drawings, it then looks at the ways in which the artist engaged with the central debates of the Catholic Reformation – debates on the Church’s mediation of the divine, the role of the individual in the path to personal salvation, and the increasingly problematic distance between the layperson and God.

It will be alive to the best writing of a transnational and comparative nature and will cross canonical chronological divides of the Central Middle Ages, the Late Middle Ages and the Early Modern Period. Renaissance History, Art and Culture intends to spark new ideas and encourage debate on the meanings, extent and influence of the Renaissance within the broader European world. It encourages engagement by scholars across disciplines – history, literature, art history, musicology, and possibly the social sciences – and focuses on ideas and collective mentalities as social, political, and cultural movements that shaped a changing world from ca 1250 to 1650. VISUAL RECONCILIATIONS OF CONCORDIA AS ANCIENT EGYPT ENTERS THE VATICAN by J. BRIANNE SHARPE Under the Direction of John R. Decker, PhD ABSTRACT The papacies of Julius II and Leo X witnessed the continuing efforts of philosophers struggling toward the concept of prisca theologia, or "ancient theology,” as well as its implications for concordia, or the search for a reconciliation between non-Christian, pagan wisdom and the orthodox beliefs of the Roman Catholic Church. This thesis will explore the Vatican's relationship with some ancient Egyptian and Egyptianizing artifacts and motifs acquired under Popes Julius II and Leo X and the use of these objects in terms of the conceptual formulation of the prisca theologia and concordia. Specifically, I am interested in how these popes used material culture to further understand and propagate complex theological concepts.

As Nilson's career advanced during World War I, the family moved to Stockholm, and shortly after this, in 1917, Gjerstad left home to enroll in Uppsala University. At Uppsala, Gjerstad studied under Axel Persson, and eventually became his assistant when the Swedish excavations at Asine in Greece began in 1922. This connection with Persson set the foundation for Gjerstad's archaeological career. A chance encounter on a train in the Balkans in the summer of 1922 between Axel Persson and a stranger, who asked to borrow money, led to Persson receiving an invitation to excavate in Cyprus under very favorable conditions.

The Urbanization of Roman Municipia: Urban Development and Romanization in Umbrian Cities During the First Century BCE Sarah M. Lippai A thesis submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Arts University of Washington 2017 Committee: Sarah Levin-Richardson Stuart Lingo Kathryn Topper Program Authorized to Offer Degree: Art History © Copyright 2017 Sarah M. Lippai University of Washington Abstract The Urbanization of Roman Municipia: Urban Development and Romanization in Umbrian Cities During the First Century BCE Sarah M. Lippai Chair of the Supervisory Committee: Assistant Professor Sarah Levin-Richardson Classics This thesis examines the urban development of the Roman urbs during the first century BCE. The cities of southern Umbria provide a case study of a wider phenomenon occurring throughout Italy following the municipalization of the peninsula after the Social War. Using archaeology and contemporary cultural analysis, I examine the development of their fora, theaters, and amphitheaters through the century. These public spaces and buildings demonstrate the concept of recirculation that occurs when architectural design ideas flow between Italian cities and Rome, informing one another until refined into a standard form. The canonical form of these Roman buildings, while set in Rome, are indebted to the contributions made in these cities. The development of the Roman urbs and these urban features into a standardized form demonstrate a confluence of culture, innovation, and mimicry under Roman power and are a visual demonstration of the unification of Italy under Rome. Acknowledgements I would like to thank my committee, Stuart Lingo and Kathryn Topper, for their insight and encouragement and especially to my committee chair, Sarah Levin-Richardson, for her enthusiasm as I neared completion.
