Mankiewicz: ALL ABOUT EVE (1950), 138 min All About Eve received 14 Academy Award nominations and won 6 of them: picture, director, supporting actor, sound, screenplay, costume design. It probably would have won two more if four members of the cast hasn’t been in direct competition with one another: Davis and Baxter for Best Actress and Celeste Holm and Thelma Ritter for Best Supporting Actress. The story is that the studio tried to get Baxter to go for Supporting but she refused because she already had one of those and wanted to move up. Years later, the same story goes, she allowed as maybe she made a bad career move there and Bette David allowed as she was finally right about something. Directed by Joseph L. Creating Children’s Books Symposium Friday, October 17, 2014 Keynote Address, by Leonard S. Marcus An Art in the Making: The American Picture Book Comes of Age It’s an honor and pleasure to be here at Penn--and here in the city of Philadelphia, with its long and illustrious history as a proving ground and home for children’s book authors and artists and their creations. Howard Pyle, who is so often called the “father of American illustration,” taught his craft from 1894 at the Drexel Institute, where his students included Frank Schoonover, Jessie Willcox Smith, Elizabeth Shippen Green, and Violet Oakley. A generation later, during the Great Depression, Bernard Waber grew up here, and while training to be a graphic designer at the Philadelphia School of Industrial Art went on sketching expeditions to the Philadelphia Zoo, where he learned to love--and draw— crocodiles like the one who became his best-known picture-book hero, Lyle. Norton Juster studied architecture at Penn in the late 1940s on his way to writing The Phantom Tollbooth, an uncategorizable classic that for more than half a century has served young people as a kind of blueprint for thinking freely and keeping faith with their own ideas. Jerry Pinkney was born, raised, and educated in this city, and has returned here often--last summer as the subject of Witness, a major retrospective of his work at the Philadelphia Museum of Art. Three-time Caldecott Medal winner David Wiesner lives here now. As for collections, the Free Library of Philadelphia is home to picture book art by Beatrix Potter and Robert Lawson, illustrator of The Story of Ferdinand. -

Counting the Dead: Estimating the Loss of Life in the Indigenous Holocaust, 1492-Present David Michael Smith University of Houston-Downtown During the past century, researchers have learned a great deal about the nature and scope of what Russell Thornton has called the demographic collapse of the Indigenous population in the Western Hemisphere after 1492.1 As David Stannard has explained, the almost inconceivable number of deaths caused by the invasion and conquest of these lands by Europeans and their descendants constitute “the worst human holocaust the world had ever witnessed.”2 Scholars have long had reliable information on the size of the Indigenous population in this hemisphere and this country at its nadir around the turn of the twentieth century. And in recent decades, investigators have developed a range of estimates of the Native population in the Western Hemisphere before 1492. Researchers have also amassed considerable knowledge about the role of diseases, wars, genocidal violence, enslavement, forced relocations, the destruction of food sources, the devastation of ways of life, declining birth rates, and other factors in the Indigenous Holocaust.3 This paper draws on the work of Russell Thornton, David Stannard, and other scholars in attempting to count the dead—that is, in developing informed and reasonable, if very rough, estimates of the total loss of Indigenous lives caused by colonialism in the Western Hemisphere and in what is today the United States of America. Although this analysis is inevitably grim and saddening, there is much to be gained by understanding the most sustained loss of life in human history—both for people living today and for future generations.
