Leonard Slatkin at 70: The DSO’s music director was born for the podium By Lawrence B. Johnson Some bright young musicians know early on that they want to be a conductor. Leonard Slatkin, who turned 70 Slatkin at 70: on September 1, had a more specific vision. He believed himself born to be a music director. Greatest Hits “First off, it was pretty clear that I would go into conducting once I had the opportunity to actually lead an orchestra,” says Slatkin, music director of the Detroit Symphony Orchestra since 2008 and occupant of the same post with the Orchestre National de Lyon since 2011. “The study process suited my own ethic and, at least for me, I felt relatively comfortable with the technical part of the job.” “But perhaps more important, I knew that I would also be a music director. Mind you, this is a very different job from just getting on the podium and waving your arms. The decision making process and the ability to shape a single ensemble into a cohesive whole, including administration, somehow felt natural to me.” Slatkin arrived at the DSO with two directorships already under his belt – the Saint Louis Symphony (1979-96) and the National Symphony in Washington, D.C. (1996-2008) – and an earful of caution about the economically distressed city and the hard-pressed orchestra to which he was being lured. But it was a challenge that excited him. “Almost everyone warned me about the impending demise of the orchestra,” the conductor says. “A lot of people said that I should not take it. -

Although more than $80,000 had been budgeted toward advertising and promotion—nearly a tenth of the festival’s total anticipated expenses––advance ticket sales had been slow, perhaps demonstrating that despite recent aesthetic shifts in new music toward styles like minimalism and neo-Romanticism, audiences still felt that contemporary composition was inaccessible, academic, or full of alienating and atonal sounds. On the first night of the festival, dubbed Horizons ’83, the Philharmonic had opened only one of its box office windows at Avery Fisher Hall. But, to everyone’s surprise, a large audi- ence soon appeared, and the queue for same-day tickets quickly stretched out into Lincoln Center’s plaza. As the Philharmonic’s composer-in-residence Jacob Druckman, who curated the Horizons festi- val, later described, “There were 1,500 people lined up around the square and we were frantically telephoning to get somebody to open up other windows.”1 Horizons ’83 was a hit. It would go on to fill Avery Fisher Hall to an average of 70 percent capacity over the festival’s six concerts: A major box office coup for contemporary music, and one com- parable to the orchestra’s ticket sales for standard fare like Beethoven or Mozart. -

The winners were selected by a committee of Academy members: Robert Beaser (chairman), Bernard Rands, Gunther Schuller, Steven Stucky, and Yehudi Wyner. The awards will be presented at the Academy's annual Ceremonial in May. Candidates for music awards are nominated by the 250 members of the Academy. ACADEMY AWARDS IN MUSIC Four composers will each receive a $7500 Academy Award in Music, which honors outstanding artistic achievement and acknowledges the composer who has arrived at his or her own voice. Each will receive an additional $7500 toward the recording of one work. The winners are Daniel Asia, David Felder, Pierre Jalbert, and James Primosch. WLADIMIR AND RHODA LAKOND AWARD The Wladimir and Rhoda Lakond award of $10,000 is given to a promising mid-career composer. This year the award will go to James Lee III. GODDARD LIEBERSON FELLOWSHIPS Two Goddard Lieberson fellowships of $15,000, endowed in 1978 by the CBS Foundation, are given to mid-career composers of exceptional gifts. This year they will go to Philippe Bodin and Aaron J. Travers. WALTER HINRICHSEN AWARD Paula Matthusen will receive the Walter Hinrichsen Award for the publication of a work by a gifted composer. -

Launched by Alsop and the BSO in 2017, the New Music Festival brings contemporary classical music to Baltimore from June 19-22. The 2019 New Music Festival celebrates women composers ahead of the BSO’s 2019-20 season, which highlights women in music in conjunction with the 100th anniversary of women’s suffrage in the U.S. Performances include the Baltimore premiere of Jennifer Higdon’s Low Brass Concerto, a BSO co- commission, as well as the world premiere of Anna Clyne’s cello concerto, Dance, with Inbal Segev. “I’m thrilled that this year’s New Music Festival features such an outstanding group of contemporary composers, who happen to be women!” said Alsop. “Each piece of music that we’ve programmed tells a unique and compelling story, and we are proud to present a range of voices and perspectives that showcases some of the most inspired work happening in classical composition today.” The 2019 New Music Festival kicks off on Wednesday, June 19 when composer Sarah Kirkland Snider participates in a discussion on her composition process at Red Emma’s Bookstore Café. CENTENNIAL NOTE Robert Sirota was President of Manhattan School of Music from 2005 to 2012, during which time he also was a member of the Composition faculty. He wrote A Rush of Wings in 2008 especially for the MSM Chamber Sinfonia, which premiered the work on January 26, 2009 at Carnegie Hall’s Zankel Hall. The concert, conducted by Kenneth Kiesler, showcased the School’s Graduate Program in Orchestral Performance with faculty members playing side-by-side with students. MSM’s OP Program began in 1991 and Glenn Dicterow, then Concertmaster of the New York Philharmonic, was a founding faculty member. -

Identifying Common Hand Position and Posture Problems with Young Musicians Flute: Students should not allow their right elbow angle to be tucked into their side—this will angle the flute down. Students need to use the pads of their fingers and not let their fingers hang over the keys. In addition, their fingers should not “fly high” but should stay close to the keys. Oboe: Watch the angle of the instrument. Often, oboe students play too close into their body and close off the reed. Sometimes, they also lower their head and this decreases lower lip pressure, resulting in unfocused tone and flat pitch. Their fingers need to stay low and close to the keys. Encourage students to not bite down, which closes off the reed. You should teach the correct combination of corner firmness and open reed akin to drinking a thick milkshake. Bassoon: It’s important for students to “bring the instrument to YOU, not you to the bassoon.” Sometimes students struggle with holding the instrument and it’s important that the angle of the instrument be over the left shoulder. Watch the hand position for the whisper key F—students should keep the hand position flat and horizontal, not angled. Clarinet: The top teeth should be on top of the mouthpiece and the teeth should be at the fulcrum, the place where the reed meets the mouthpiece. Most clarinetists don’t put enough mouthpiece in the mouth. Focus heavily on a flat chin. Make sure the fingers stay curved as if holding a tennis ball and the fingers should be straight across, not angled (students like to angle their fingers to rest on the side keys). -
