Alongside the outstanding academic programme, the Senior School girls are given the opportunity to take part in a wide range of enrichment activities. The clubs on offer are held during the lunch break and after school, and most of them are run by our enthusiastic staff.T here are also competitions and events in which the girls can become involved. Extra-curricular activities introduce girls to new opportunities, thereby broadening their horizons, and encourage the development of a range of skills and qualities, e.g. creative thinking, events management, entrepreneurial and business skills, team-work and self-confidence.T his leaflet outlines the extensive range of enrichment and well-being activities on offer. As part of the Award, each year group participates in a residential experience ▲ to encourage team-building and House involvement. As a result of popular demand, we ▲ hope to expand the scheme to allow Year 9 girls to participate in the Award. In addition to the annual award, special achievement and effort are recognised weekly through the Howell’s Award ‘Star of the Week’ scheme. A girl who is featured as ‘Star of the Week’ on the Howell’s Award notice board is rewarded with two points for her House. In this way, the scheme is linked to the school’s overall House system through both the criteria for the Award itself, awarded in a ceremony at the end of the Spring Term, and rewards for effort and achievement throughout the school year. Booklets are collected periodically to allow the monitoring and communication to staff of girls’ achievements and special mention is given to those who participate fully in order to encourage girls throughout the year. The Howell’s Award was devised to improve the girls’ well-being by rewarding effort and achievement outside the academic. It is a successful scheme which encourages them to engage positively with each other and staff and emphasises the value placed by Howell’s on girls’ attitudes, personalities and contributions to school life. 3 SPORTS Competitions and Rallies GDST Rallies, Tournaments Cardiff and Vale and Competitions Schools’ Tournaments Howell’s promotes fitness for life ● Swimming Gala ● Hockey: Year 7, Year 8, Year 9, Under 15 and Under 16 and Senior ● Senior and Under 15 Hockey ● Netball: Year 7, Year 8, Year 9, Year 10, Year 11 and Senior Howell’s School offers a wide range of sports activities and clubs at lunchtime and after school. On the streets, in venues that aren’t usually associated with arts activity and even in artists’ homes, Made in Roath (MIR) is always full of surprises and celebratory moments, accessible but never dumbed-down or banal and definitely lively. For a week Roath will be buzzing with workshops, exhibitions, events, performances, mini festivals, walks and talks. Local residents get an opportunity to meet each other and get stuck in to all that’s on offer. They are joined by increasing numbers of visitors, attracted in from further afield by the sheer fizz emanating from this Cardiff suburb. Oh and created by the artists, writers, musicians who live in Roath there’s usually excellent cake involved somewhere too. and rope in each other and their neighbours and friends to create a community of people doing it by and for themselves, The energy and commitment of the MIR organisers is always happy to let others join in. impressive and the mission clear - to demonstrate that artists Local businesses have also thrown themselves are part of the community and work within it, not agents who enthusiastically behind this festival; they’re part of this do things with, for or to it. The net result is an audience of community too, and so have other local organisations and active participants across all sections of this very diverse venues, so that each year there seems to be yet another area and children are always extremely welcome and in partnership forged.

  • CARDIFF OPEN AIR THEATRE FESTIVAL 2018 Sophia Gardens Cathedral Road Cardiff CF11 9SQ
CARDIFF OPEN AIR THEATRE FESTIVAL 2018 Sophia Gardens Cathedral Road Cardiff CF11 9SQ AUDITION NOTICE Book: Joseph Stein Music: Jerry Brock Lyrics: Sheldon Harnick Director : Richard Tunley Musical Director : Rob Thorne Jnr. Fiddler on the Roof is a musical set in Anatevka, Imperial Russia in 1905. It is based on Tevye and his Daughters and other tales by Sholem Aleichem. The story centres on Tevye, the father of five daughters, and his attempts to maintain his Jewish religious and cultural traditions as outside influences encroach upon the family's lives. He must cope both with the strong-willed actions of his three older daughters, who wish to marry for love – each one's choice of a husband moves further away from the customs of his faith – and with the edict of the Tsar that evicts the Jews from their village. Successful on Broadway, the West End and many productions on the international circuit, Fiddler in the Roof remains a classic. Its wonderful use of music and song interwoven into the lives on the inhabitants of Anatevka has made it a theatrical favourite. There is nothing old-fashioned or dated about Fiddler. The closing scene where the community are evicted from their village and forced to seek new lives elsewhere is at the centre of current news. Images of refugees no longer safe or welcome in their home countries are all too familiar and the show has as much resonance today as it had on its opening night. The show has a beautifully crafted score and a witty script. It is full of substance, challenging, charming and perfect for an ensemble - a terrific choice for the 2018 festival.
