Capolavori della collezione di Roberto Longhi” ai Musei Capitolini Altri 4 mesi per ammirare il famoso Ragazzo morso da un ramarro di Caravaggio e oltre quaranta dipinti di artisti della sua cerchia, provenienti dalla raccolta del grande storico dell’arte e collezionista Roberto Longhi Roma, 08 settembre 2020 – È stata prorogata fino al 10 gennaio 2021 la mostra “Il tempo di Caravaggio. Capolavori della collezione di Roberto Longhi”, allestita nelle sale espositive di Palazzo Caffarelli ai Musei Capitolini e aperta al pubblico il 16 giugno. L’esposizione, accolta con grande favore dal pubblico e dalla critica, è promossa da Roma Capitale, Assessorato alla Crescita culturale - Sovrintendenza Capitolina ai Beni Culturali e dalla Fondazione di Studi di Storia dell’Arte Roberto Longhi. Curata da Maria Cristina Bandera, Direttore scientifico della Fondazione Longhi, la mostra è organizzata da Civita Mostre e Musei e Zètema Progetto Cultura. Il catalogo è di Marsilio Editori. L’ingresso è gratuito per i possessori della MIC card. L’esposizione è aperta al pubblico nel rispetto delle linee guida formulate dal Comitato Tecnico Scientifico per contenere la diffusione del Covid-19 consentendo, al contempo, lo svolgimento di una normale visita museale. L’esposizione è dedicata alla raccolta dei dipinti caravaggeschi del grande storico dell’arte e collezionista Roberto Longhi (Alba 1890 – Firenze 1970), una delle personalità più affascinanti della storia dell’arte del XX secolo, di cui ricorre quest’anno il cinquantenario della scomparsa. Nella sua dimora fiorentina, villa Il Tasso, oggi sede della Fondazione che gli è intitolata, raccolse un numero notevole di opere dei maestri di tutte le epoche che furono per lui occasione di ricerca. -

Valmontone Conference on Mattia Preti
Baroque Routes - 2014 / 15 5 Valmontone Conference on Mattia Preti A scholarly conference focused on the Cavaliere Calabrese, the artist Mattia Preti, was held on Monday 3 November 2014 at Palazzo Pamphilj in Valmontone, around 30 kilometres from Rome. Participants examined the status of research into this artist following the celebrations of the 400th centenary of his birth (1613-2013). The event was titled ‘Sotto la volta dell’aria. Mattia Preti: Approfondimenti e ricerche.’ This conference was organised by the International Institute for Baroque Studies at the University of Malta in association with the Soprintendenza PSAE del Lazio and the Comune di Valmontone. For this purpose an on-site scientific committee composed of Sante Guido, Dora Catalano of the Superintendence extensive decoration of eighteenth-century of the region, Monica Di Gregorio, director palaces throughout Europe. The Symbolism of Blood in Two Masterpieces of the Early Italian Baroque Art
The Symbolism of blood in two masterpieces of the early Italian Baroque art Angelo Lo Conte Throughout history, blood has been associated with countless meanings, encompassing life and death, power and pride, love and hate, fear and sacrifice. In the early Baroque, thanks to the realistic mi of Caravaggio and Artemisia Gentileschi, blood was transformed into a new medium, whose powerful symbolism demolished the conformed traditions of Mannerism, leading art into a new expressive era. Bearer of macabre premonitions, blood is the exclamation mark in two of the most outstanding masterpieces of the early Italian Seicento: Caravaggio's Beheading a/the Baptist (1608)' (fig. 1) and Artemisia Gentileschi's Judith beheading Halo/ernes (1611-12)2 (fig. 2), in which two emblematic events of the Christian tradition are interpreted as a representation of personal memories and fears, generating a powerful spiral of emotions which constantly swirls between fiction and reality. Through this paper I propose that both Caravaggio and Aliemisia adopted blood as a symbolic representation of their own life-stories, understanding it as a vehicle to express intense emotions of fear and revenge. Seen under this perspective, the red fluid results as a powerful and dramatic weapon used to shock the viewer and, at the same time, express an intimate and anguished condition of pain. Dear Members of the Italian Art Society: We are, as always, deeply grateful to the Samuel H. Kress Foundation for their support this past decade of these With a new semester (and a new academic year) important events. This year’s lecture was the last under our upon us once again, I write to provide a few highlights of current grant agreement and much of my time at the moment IAS activities in the past months. As ever, I am deeply is dedicated to finalizing our application to continue the grateful to all of our members and especially to those lecture series forward into next year and beyond. The Collecting, Dealing and Patronage Practices of Gaspare Roomer
ART AND BUSINESS IN SEVENTEENTH-CENTURY NAPLES: THE COLLECTING, DEALING AND PATRONAGE PRACTICES OF GASPARE ROOMER by Chantelle Lepine-Cercone A thesis submitted to the Department of Art History In conformity with the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy Queen’s University Kingston, Ontario, Canada (November, 2014) Copyright ©Chantelle Lepine-Cercone, 2014 Abstract This thesis examines the cultural influence of the seventeenth-century Flemish merchant Gaspare Roomer, who lived in Naples from 1616 until 1674. Specifically, it explores his art dealing, collecting and patronage activities, which exerted a notable influence on Neapolitan society. Using bank documents, letters, artist biographies and guidebooks, Roomer’s practices as an art dealer are studied and his importance as a major figure in the artistic exchange between Northern and Sourthern Europe is elucidated. His collection is primarily reconstructed using inventories, wills and artist biographies. Through this examination, Roomer emerges as one of Naples’ most prominent collectors of landscapes, still lifes and battle scenes, in addition to being a sophisticated collector of history paintings. The merchant’s relationship to the Spanish viceregal government of Naples is also discussed, as are his contributions to charity. Giving paintings to notable individuals and large donations to religious institutions were another way in which Roomer exacted influence. This study of Roomer’s cultural importance is comprehensive, exploring both Northern and Southern European sources. Rethinking Savoldo's Magdalenes
Rethinking Savoldo’s Magdalenes: A “Muddle of the Maries”?1 Charlotte Nichols The luminously veiled women in Giovanni Gerolamo Savoldo’s four Magdalene paintings—one of which resides at the Getty Museum—have consistently been identified by scholars as Mary Magdalene near Christ’s tomb on Easter morning. Yet these physically and emotionally self- contained figures are atypical representations of her in the early Cinquecento, when she is most often seen either as an exuberant observer of the Resurrection in scenes of the Noli me tangere or as a worldly penitent in half-length. A reconsideration of the pictures in connection with myriad early Christian, Byzantine, and Italian accounts of the Passion and devotional imagery suggests that Savoldo responded in an inventive way to a millennium-old discussion about the roles of the Virgin Mary and Mary Magdalene as the first witnesses of the risen Christ. The design, color, and positioning of the veil, which dominates the painted surface of the respective Magdalenes, encode layers of meaning explicated by textual and visual comparison; taken together they allow an alternate Marian interpretation of the presumed Magdalene figure’s biblical identity. At the expense of iconic clarity, the painter whom Giorgio Vasari described as “capriccioso e sofistico” appears to have created a multivalent image precisely in order to communicate the conflicting accounts in sacred and hagiographic texts, as well as the intellectual appeal of deliberately ambiguous, at times aporetic subject matter to northern Italian patrons in the sixteenth century.2 The Magdalenes: description, provenance, and subject The format of Savoldo’s Magdalenes is arresting, dominated by a silken waterfall of fabric that communicates both protective enclosure and luxuriant tactility (Figs. -

Un Cristo nudo del 1400 rivede la luce a Lauro Scoperto un raro ciclo di affreschi del XV secolo a Lauro di Nola. Una rarità iconografica che sta meravigliando gli stessi studiosi. Il 2000, anno giubilare, è trascorso in Campania denso di manifestazioni religiose e appuntamenti culturali che hanno riavvicinato il grande pubblico non solo agli aspetti intimi della fede, ma anche alle necessarie “esteriorità”, tra queste la più ghiotta è stata senza dubbio la mostra artistica sul tema della Croce tenutasi presso la sala Carlo V nel Maschio Angioino. La mostra ricca di straordinari reperti, alcuni dei quali, preziosissimi, mai esposti prima, ha fatto seguito ad un dotto convegno sull’argomento organizzato nei mesi precedenti dal professor Boris Iulianich, emerito nell’Università di Napoli e massimo esperto di storia del Cristianesimo, che ha visto la partecipazione di ben 54 relatori provenienti da ogni angolo del globo. Per rimanere nel tema cristologico vogliamo segnalare una sensazionale scoperta avvenuta nella chiesa di Santa Maria della Pietà a Lauro di Nola (fig. 1), ove nell’ambito di un ciclo di affreschi quattrocenteschi, a lungo rimasti sepolti tra le fondamenta di una chiesa più moderna, spicca una scena del Battesimo di Cristo con un’iconografia assolutamente rara: una ostentatio genitalium in piena regola, che lascia esterrefatti, perché la raffigurazione di nostro Signore completamente nudo, in età adulta è poco meno che eccezionale. In Italia possiamo citare soltanto due altri esempi: il Crocifisso ligneo scolpito da Michelangelo nel convento di Santo Spirito in Firenze ed un mosaico nella cupola del Battistero della Cattedrale di Ravenna risalente al V secolo. -

Northern Italianate Landscape Painters ... Northern artists had long spent time in Italy – hence the work of Pieter de Kempeneer (1503-1580) (Room 9) and Frans Floris (1516-1570) in the sixteenth century, who drew their inspiration from the Antique and contemporary masters. Landscape painters Paul Bril (1554-1626) and Adam Elsheimer (1574/78-1610/20) (Room 10), settled there from the end of the sixteenth century and were to influence the Italian school profoundly. However, from around 1620, the Northern Diaspora gave rise to a novel way of representing the towns and countryside of Italy. Cornelis van Poelenburgh (1595/96-1667) went to Rome in 1617 and around 1623 was among the founder members of the Bentvueghels “birds of a feather”, an association of mutual support for Northern artists, goldsmiths and “art lovers” – not only Flemish and Dutch, but Room also Germans and even a few French. He painted shepherds in the ruins and plains of Latium where the harsh light creates strong shadows. Around 1625, the Dutch painter Pieter van Berchem Laer (1599-1642 ?), nicknamed Il Bamboccio, invented the bambocciate, a different take on Caravaggesque scenes of realism showing moments of contemporary Italian low-life in ... the open air and bringing a modern feel to the subject matter. The bambocciate met with considerable success. Angelo Caroselli (Roma, 1585 – 1652) The penitent Magdalene Oil on canvas Ca. 1610-15 59 x 75 cm. Angelo Caroselli was born in Rome, the son of Achilles, a dealer in second-hand goods who bought broken silver and gold objects and was a minor but dedicated collector of paintings by renowned painters of the past1. Caroselli was a self-taught, experimental and intellectually curious painter. By 1604 he appears as one of the artists registered at the Accademia di San Luca in Rome, an institution with which he maintained some relationship, at least in the years 1608 and 1636. Caroselli broadened his knowledge of art outside the frontiers of his native region with early trips to Florence in 1605 and Naples in 1613. He was primarily based in Rome from approximately 1615, the year of his first marriage to Maria Zurca from Sicily, and it was there that he must have had a large studio although little is known on this subject. Passeri states that among the regulars in the “bottega” were the Tuscan Pietro Paolini and the painters Francesco Lauri and possibly Tommaso Donnini. Caroselli always kept abreast of the latest developments in art, particularly since Paolini, who arrived in his studio around 1619, initiated him into the first phase of Caravaggesque naturalism. Caroselli’s use of this language essentially relates to form and composition rather than representing a profound adherence to the new pictorial philosophy. Nonetheless, around 1630 it is difficult to distinguish between his works and those of his follower Paolini, given that both artists were fully engaged in the new artistic trend. -
