Don’t rely on old ways of searching. Become aware that approximately 99% of content on the Internet doesn’t show up on typical search engines, so think about other ways of searching. Search for databases. Using any search engine, enter your keyword alongside "database" to find any searchable databases (for example, "running database" or "woodworking database"). Get a library card. Many public libraries offer access to research databases for users with an active library card. Stay informed. Reading blogs or other updated guides about Internet searches on a regular basis will ensure you are staying updated with the latest information on Internet searches. Search government databases. There are many government databases available that have plenty of information you may be seeking. Bookmark your databases. Once you find helpful databases, don’t forget to bookmark them so you can always come back to them again. Practice. Just like with other types of research, the more you practice searching the deep web, the better you will become at it. Don’t give up. Researchers agree that most of the information hidden in the deep web is some of the best quality information available.

It lives right where you do your work—in the web browser itself. 46) Target Suitable Journals Do you need to do any of the following?

Identify which journals to send your articles for publication.

Identify journals relevant to your research.

47) Impact Factor The impact factor is calculated by dividing the number of current citations to articles published in the two previous years by the total number of articles published in the two previous years. For example: American Political Science Review Impact Factor: 2.116 Cites in 2009 to articles published in 2007 = 123 Cites in 2009 to articles published in 2008 = 78 Number of articles published in 2007 = 50 Number of articles published in 2008 = 45 Cites to recent articles / Number of recent articles = (123 + 78)/(50 + 45) = 201/95 = 2.116

48) h-index The h-index is an index that attempts to measure both the scientific productivity and the apparent scientific impact of a scientist. The index is based on the set of the scientist's most cited papers and the number of citations that they have received in other people's publications. The index can also be applied to the productivity and impact of a group of scientists, such as a department or university or country. The index was suggested by Jorge E. Hirsch, a physicist at UCSD, as a tool for determining theoretical physicists' relative quality[1] and is sometimes called the Hirsch index or Hirsch number. A scientist has index h if h of [his/her] Np papers have at least h citations each, and the other (Np − h) papers have at most h citations each. In other words, a scholar with an index of h has published h papers each of which has been cited by others at least h times.[2] Thus, the h- index reflects both the number of publications and the number of citations per publication. The index is designed to improve upon simpler measures such as the total number of citations or publications. The index works properly only for comparing scientists working in the same field; citation conventions differ widely among different fields. The h-index serves as an alternative to more traditional journal impact factor metrics in the evaluation of the impact of the work of a particular researcher. Because only the most highly cited articles contribute to the h-index, its determination is a relatively simpler process. Hirsch has demonstrated that h has high predictive value for whether a scientist has won honors like National Academy membership or the Nobel Prize. In physics, a moderately productive scientist should have an h equal to the number of years of service while biomedical scientists tend to have higher values. The h-index grows as citations accumulate and thus it depends on the 'academic age' of a researcher. Hirsch suggested that, for physicists, a value for h of about 10–12 might be a useful guideline for tenure decisions at major research universities. A value of about 18 could mean a full professorship, 15–20 could mean a fellowship in the American Physical Society, and 45 or higher could mean membership in theUnited States National Academy of Sciences.[3] Little systematic investigation has been made on how academic recognition correlates with h index over different institutions, nations and fields of study 49) How to calculate the h-index? The Immediacy Index is the average number of times an article is cited in the year it is published.

The journal Immediacy Index indicates how quickly articles in a journal are cited. The aggregate Immediacy Index indicates how quickly articles in a subject category are cited.

The Immediacy Index is calculated by dividing the number of citations to articles published in a given year by the number of articles published in that year. Because it is a per-article average, the Immediacy Index tends to discount the advantage of large journals over small ones. However, frequently issued journals may have an advantage because an article published early in the year has a better chance of being cited than one published later in the year. Many publications that publish infrequently or late in the year have low Immediacy Indexes. For comparing journals specializing in cutting-edge research, the immediacy index can provide a useful perspective. 51) The Eigenfactor™ score The Eigenfactor™ score of a journal is an estimate of the percentage of time that library users spend with that journal. The Eigenfactor algorithm corresponds to a simple model of research in which readers follow chains of citations as they move from journal to journal. Imagine that a researcher goes to the library and selects a journal article at random. After reading the article, the researcher selects at random one of the citations from the article. She then proceeds to the journal that was cited, reads a random article there, and selects a citation to direct her to her next journal volume. The researcher does this ad infinitum. The amount of time that the researcher spends with each journal gives us a measure of that journal’s importance within network of academic citations. Moreover, if real researchers find a sizable fraction of the articles that they read by following citation chains, the amount of time that our random researcher spends with each journal gives us an estimate of the amount of time that real researchers spend with each journal. While we cannot carry out this experiment in practice, we can use mathematics to simulate this process. 52) Journal Citation Reports® (JCR) Training Journal Citation Reports® (JCR) offers a systematic, objective means to critically evaluate the world's leading journals, with quantifiable, statistical information based on citation data. By compiling articles' cited references, JCR Web helps to measure research influence and impact at the journal and category levels, and shows the relationship between citing and cited journals. Available in Science and Social Sciences editions. We invite you to explore the following Journal Citation Reports training opportunities.

53) Eigenfactor™ Score and the Article Influence™ Score Eigenfactor From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia The Eigenfactor is a rating of the importance of a scientific journal. In a manner reminiscent of Google's Pagerank algorithm, journals are rated according to the number of incoming citations, with citations from highly-ranked journals weighted to make a larger contribution to the eigenfactor than those from poorly-ranked journals.[1] Eigenfactors are calculated by eigenfactor.org, where they can be freely viewed; they are intended to give a measure of how likely a journal is to be used, and are thought to reflect how long the average researcher would spend reading content from that journal.[1] The Eigenfactor approach is thought to be more robust than the impact factor metric,[2] which purely counts incoming citations without considering the significance of those citations.[3] However, the two metrics have been shown to be strongly correlated for medical journals.[4] 54) Journal Quality List - Anne-Wil Harzing Journal Quality List Compiled and edited by Prof. Anne-Wil Harzing 36th Edition, 6 February 2010 Introduction

Words are often used in different ways by different people; your goal is to write questions that each person will interpret in the same way. A good question should be short and straightforward. A questionnaire should not be too long, use plain English and the question shouldn't be difficult to answer. Only through careful writing, editing, review, and rewriting can you make a good questionnaire. The following provides you with guidelines for conducting your surveys: Table of contents

Write a short questionnaire Use simple words Relax your grammar Assure a common understanding Start with interesting questions Don't write leading question Avoid double negatives Balance rating scales Don't make the list of choices too long Avoid difficult concepts

Avoid difficult recall questions Use Closed-ended questions rather than Open-ended ones Put your questions in a logical order Pre-test your survey Naming your survey Cover memo or introduction 68) ResearcherID ResearcherID is a global, multi-disciplinary scholarly research community. These sites are a great way to promote your Webs site to friends and people with similar interests. Below are just a few suggestions on how to use these sites to generate more traffic.

76) Facebook

Facebook helps you connect and share with the people in your life.

77) Search Engine Optimization (SEO) Search Engine Optimization Search Engine Optimization (SEO) is the process of improving the volume and quality of traffic to a web site from search engines. The following steps can greatly improve your website’s search results. 78) Strategies to increase citations Strategies to increase citations to your publications

Target a journal with a high impact factor, or, in fact, with any impact factor at all! Choose a new, rapidly growing field of research. Articles on hot topics tend to cite much more recent references than those in more traditional fields. Target journals in rapidly growing research fields because they tend to publish papers with a short time interval from submission to acceptance. Write research articles, technical notes and reviews. For the purposes of calculating citations, these are considered “citable” items. Editorials, letters, news items and meeting abstracts are “non-citable items”. Write reviews in addition to research papers. Reviews are more likely to be cited than original research papers. Write at length. Longer articles are cited more often. Make it easy for others to access your work. Online availability of articles clearly increases citations (and therefore, the journal’s impact factor). It helps if researchers can find relevant articles and access them instantly, rather than working their way through barriers of passwords and technicalities. This effect will increase with the availability of search engines like Google Scholar.

Target “open access” journals (especially if they have an impact factor). Make your work available via the QUT ePrints archive, remembering that Google searches ePrint archives. Put the address for your ePrints page into your email signature as a clickable link.

Don’t write as a member of a consortium. It’s better to be one in a list of individual authors. Some evidence shows citations to articles written by consortia have been undercounted

Data bank Emissions from electricity generation in Malaysia

T. M. I. Mahlia,

Department of Mechanical Engineering, University of Malaya, 50603 Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia Received 1 October 2001; accepted 4 October 2001 Available online 30 October 2001.

Abstract Emissions in the process utilization produce adverse effects on the environment that influence human health, organism growth, climatic changes and so on. The Kyoto protocol, produced by the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate change (UNFCC) in December 1997, prescribed a legally binding greenhouse gas emission target about 5% below their 1990 level. About 160 countries including Malaysia now adopt this protocol. Electricity generation is one of the main contributors to emissions in the country. In order to calculate the potential emissions produced by this activity, the type of fuel use should be identified. Malaysia hopes to gradually change fuel use from 70% gas, 15% coal, 10% hydro, and 5% petroleum in the year 2000 to 40% gas, 30% hydro, 29% coal, and only 1% petroleum by the year 2020. The changes in fuel type have changed the pattern of emission production. This study attempts to predict the pattern of emissions from 2002 to 2020 due to the changes in fuel use. The calculation is based on emissions for unit electricity generated and the percentages of fuel use for electricity generation. The study found that the electricity generation company has produced huge emissions from their power plants in this country.
