Abstract We present field and seismic evidence for the existence of Coniacian-Campanian syntectonic angular unconformities within basal foreland basin sequences of the Austral or Magallanes Basin, with implications for the understanding of deformation and sedimentation in the southern Patagonian Andes. The studied sequences belong to the mainly turbiditic Upper Cretaceous Cerro Toro Formation that includes a world-class example of conglomerate-filled deep-water channel bodies deposited in an axial foredeep depocenter. We present multiple evidence of syntectonic deposition showing that the present internal domain of the fold-thrust belt was an active Coniacian-Campanian wedge-top depozone where deposition of turbidites and conglomerate channels of Cerro Toro took place. Cretaceous synsedimentary deformation was dominated by positive inversion of Jurassic This article has been accepted for publication and undergone full peer review but has not been through the copyediting, typesetting, pagination and proofreading process, which may Accepted lead to differences between this version and the Version of Record.

Lavaisse 1194, 1107 Buenos Aires, Argentina. E-mail: [email protected] ABSTRACT The stratigraphy of the Argentinean Fuegian Andes reveals contrasting Mesozoic-Cenozoic tectonic regimes. The Lemaire Formation, submarine complex of bimodal volcanites, breccias, and sedimentary rocks; the Yah- gán Formation, volcaniclastic apron of deep-marine andesite-rich turbidites and mudstones; and the Beauvoir Formation, slope mudstones, all evidence late Jurassic-early Cretaceous extension and consequent origination of the Rocas Verdes Marginal Basin. The basal late Cretaceous ductile deformation, isoclinal folding, and meta- morphism of these rocks indicate a compressional tectonic regime that resulted in the closure of the marginal basin. The Fuegian Andes were uplifted by the late Campanian; subsequent propagation of the compressional deformation and subsidence by tectonic loading along the northern orogenic margin originated the Austral and Malvinas foreland basins. The Turonian-lower Campanian “Estratos de Buen Suceso” represents the final stages of the closure of the marginal basin and/or the beginning of the foreland basins. During the late Campanian to mid Miocene, the foraminiferal

YOUR O.A.T. ADVENTURE TRAVEL PLANNING GUIDE® The Wilderness Beyond: Patagonia, Tierra del Fuego & the Chilean Fjords 2022 Small Groups: 20-25 travelers—guaranteed! (average of 22) Overseas Adventure Travel ® The Leader in Personalized Small Group Adventures on the Road Less Traveled 1 Dear Traveler, At last, the world is opening up again for curious travel lovers like you and me. And the O.A.T. The Wilderness Beyond: Patagonia, Tierra del Fuego & the Chilean Fjords itinerary you’ve expressed interest in will be a wonderful way to resume the discoveries that bring us so much joy. You might soon be enjoying standout moments like these: As I set foot on the ice fields of the Perito Moreno Glacier in Los Glaciares National Park, I stood humbled by the pristine beauty of this 200-foot natural wonder and closed my eyes to listen. A thunderous noise in the distance broke the silence of this peaceful place as smaller icebergs broke off from the glacier—a process known as “calving.” While I’ll never forget the natural splendors that I witnessed in Patagonia, it was the Chilean and Argentinian people who left the biggest impression. You’ll have a chance to meet them, too, when you join a local family for a home-cooked meal and an evening of good conversation at their home in Buenos Aires. You’ll also hear the dramatic personal experience of someone who lived through the “Dirty War,” a dark chapter of Argentinian history from 1973 to 1985 during which thousands of Argentinians disappeared or were killed during the country’s last dictatorship, when you meet a local resident at a cafe in Buenos Aires.

Horseback riding programs Riding to Deep Nibepo FROM 1ST NOVEMBER 2016 TO 31ST MARCH 2017 5-DAY / 4-NIGHT PACKAGE REGULAR DEPARTURES: 1ST AND 3RD WEDNESDAY OF EVERY MONTH Be part of landscape: woods, lakes, glaciers, refuges Be part of deep patagonic life: a riding from outpost to outpost “Riding to deep Nibepo” program proposes exploring on horseback the remotest corners of the Estancia Nibepo Aike and Los Glaciares National Park, places where nature is discovered in its maximum expression, pristine nature, a combination of Andean woodland, crystal clear lakes, high mountains, impressive skies and glaciers. The proposal is to get to where vehicles cannot reach, leaving the main buildings of the estancia behind, then climb high up and enter another world after crossing the clearing. Get away from civilization and allow yourself, for 4 days, to become a part of the landscape but also of patagonic life. A riding experience surrounded by immensity. Participate just for some days in a rangers life, in communion with the countryside, or of those pioneers and adventurers who where part of this area’s history. Meet the “puesteros”, who are in charge of each outpost. A very old job which is still very important in the way Nibepo Aike rural life develops. Far away and long ago, when there were no roads, when the tracks and paths were only recently being marked, they had to spend nights far away from civilization to take care of cattle. Nowadays, their occupation is very similar and they know the lands as no one else do. Three nights will be provided at typical outposts where the rangers stay in order work with the livestock.
