Key activities of the Institution include: independent and objective analysis of the economy; strategic analysis of the concepts and doctrines in selected areas of public policy; research in the areas that are important for regional cooperation; conduct seminars and workshops to bring together policy makers, experts and other members; undertake funded research projects and disseminate research findings with the view to enhance public awareness and contribute to debate on issues of public policy. -

By Kiyya Baloch May 15, 2015 Despite considerable rhetoric and months of effort, the operations Pakistani paramilitary forces have been carrying out in Karachi still appear to be far short of bring peace to the port city. On Wednesday, six gunmen armed with sophisticated weapons gunned down at least 43 people and wounded 13 others in a busy market in the city. The attackers were able to flee unhurt from the scene. The attackers opened fire inside a bus carrying members of the Ismaili community, a sub-sect of Shiite Muslims known for their liberal views. In the wake of the attack came chaos, as mobs took out their anger on local police. Hundreds of men, women and children took to the streets, blaming Pakistan’s paramilitary forces and police for not targeting Jundullah, which claimed responsibility for the deadly attack. Jundullah is a splinter group of the Pakistani Taliban, allegedly based in a Pakistani tribal area and Quetta. According to senior Pakistani journalist Umar Farooq, Jundullah has very strong links with the Islamic State (IS), pledging allegiance in a November 2014 video message. Asked about the attack, Gulam Haider Jamali, Sindh Police Chief said, “We are in the process of investigation, if it was a security lapse we will act against police officers within the parameters www.afgazad.com 1 [email protected] of the Constitution. -

We had a keen sense of how much things had changed in the South Asian mediascape since the introduction of cable and satellite television in the late 1980s and early 1990s. My interest in Pakistan was first aroused when, as a child, I used to hear stories from my late father, an air force officer, about two Pakistan air force officers. In undivided India they had been his flight commanders in the Royal Indian Air Force. They and my father had fought in World War II together, flying Hurricanes and Spitfires over Burma and also after the war. Both these officers later went on to head the Pakistan Air Force. -

India-Pakistan Regional Young Leaders Initiative Inaugural Class of Fellows Ahmad Rafay Alam is a lawyer and environmental activist. He has a decade's experience in civil and corporate litigation throughout Pakistan and, last year, took leave as Senior Associate at one of the country's largest law firms in order to serve as Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Lahore Electric Supply Company. Although he continues his private practice, his current focus is to improve the efficiency of Pakistan's largest electricity distribution company. Rafay also teaches a course on environmental law and regulation and property law at the Law & Policy Department of the Lahore University of Management Sciences (LUMS). At LUMS, he is also the coordinator of the Environment and Natural Resource Cluster of the Development Policy Research Center (DPRC), which is about to begin a Canadian $500,000 three- year project in partnership with WFF-Pakistan to study the effects of climate change on food security in 10 districts of Pakistan. He is also the coordinator of the LUMS Water Program, which was established in 2009 to act as a platform for Track-II diplomacy on water issues between India and Pakistan. Last year, he was project leader of a one-year trans-boundary water study with the New Delhi-based Observer Research Foundation. Rafay continues to conduct public interest litigations pro bono. Ziad Bashir is Director of Gul Ahmed Textile Mills, one of the oldest and largest textile mills in Pakistan. In 2004 he became the Chairman of Arwen Tech, an IT company specializing in system integration, and in 2008 he transitioned from eight years as Chief Executive of Swisstex Chemicals Pvt to the company’s Chairman. -
