High Speed Two: Full Speed Ahead?
High Speed Two: Full Speed Ahead? The UK government has given the “green light” to the High Speed Two (HS2) rail project in its entirety, following the outcome of the Oakervee Review, ending months of speculation over the future of the scheme. Phase 2b of the project, linking Crewe to Manchester and Birmingham to Leeds via Sheffield, is subject to further review. It now forms part of an ambitious “High Speed North” integrated masterplan, including Northern Powerhouse Rail and other local rail improvements. What will this mean for landowners, occupiers and others who are directly affected by the HS2 scheme? Time will tell. However, the announcement is likely to be welcomed, as it provides certainty that the project will now proceed, although concerns over the long-term plans for delivery of Phase 2b will persist. Crossrail 2 factsheet: Services between Berrylands and Hampton Court New Crossrail 2 services are proposed to serve all stations between Berrylands and Hampton Court, with 4 trains per hour in each direction operating directly to, and across central London. What is Crossrail 2? Crossrail 2 in this area Crossrail 2 is a proposed new railway serving London and the wider South East that could be open by 2030. It would connect the existing National Rail networks in Surrey and Hertfordshire with trains running through a new tunnel from Wimbledon to Tottenham Hale and New Southgate. Crossrail 2 will connect directly with National Rail, London Underground, London Overground, Crossrail 1, High Speed 1 international and domestic and High Speed 2 services, meaning passengers will be one change away from over 800 destinations nationwide. Why do we need Crossrail 2? The South West Main Line is one of the busiest and most congested routes in the country. It already faces capacity constraints and demand for National Rail services into Waterloo is forecast to increase by at least 40% by 2043. This means the severe crowding on the network will nearly double, and would likely lead to passengers being unable to board trains at some stations. Crossrail 2 provides a solution. It would free up space on the railway helping to reduce congestion, and would enable us to run more local services to central London that bypass the most congested stations. Transport improvements already underway will help offset the pressure in the short term. But we need Crossrail 2 to cope with longer term growth. -

A Career at BBC Birmingham The BBC has approximately 350 staff who work at BBC Birmingham at The Mailbox and the Drama Village. Currently, The Asian Network is based in Birmingham as are parts of Radio 2, with programmes like Clare Teal, Paul Jones and the BBC Big Band. In 2015, more roles are moving to Birmingham including the BBC Academy central HR teams, Internal Communications, Outreach and Corporate Responsibility and Workplace and Safety. A Digital Innovation Unit will also open in the city during 2015. By the end of the year there will be around 550 BBC staff in Birmingham. The Creative and Media Industries are one of the fastest growing sectors in the UK. If you want to work in the media in the future, it helps to understand how it works. Creative and Media is a big industry sector covering radio, TV, publishing, advertising and much more. Different sets of statistics include different occupations and the results can be confusing. 2 The birmingham CITY Centre Extension Scheme 2.1 INTRODUCTION This chapter of the ES sets out the objectives of the scheme and also describes: • the main features of light rail transit (LRT) schemes; • the potential benefits of LRT schemes such as Midland Metro; • the proposed route and design of the proposed scheme; • the way in which the scheme will be constructed and operated; and • the main alternatives that have been considered. 2.2 FEATURES OF LIGHT RAIL TRANSIT SYSTEMS 2.2.1 What is Light Rail? The exact origination of the term “light rail” is unclear. However, it was reportedly first used in the 1960s in order to avoid the American terms “trolley” and “streetcar” or the British “tram” and “tramway”. There are a number of definitions of light rail systems in existence. However, “light rail” commonly refers to electric railway systems constructed during the 1970s or later. They are characterised by an “ability to operate single or multiple cars [trains] along exclusive rights-of-way at ground level, on aerial structures, in subways or in streets, able to board and discharge passengers at station platforms or at street, track, or car-floor level and normally powered by overhead electrical wires” (). 1.2.2 Key Characteristics of Light Rail Schemes The development of LRT systems in Europe and the USA began in the latter half of the last century, principally in response to the advance of the private car and the consequent increase in congestion and car ownership within cities. There was, as a result, a need for a change in the function of public transport, such that it could offer the ability to: • travel distances longer than buses and traditional tramways, but shorter than heavy railways; • deliver public transport services on a regional rather than an urban scale; and • compete with the private car on a door-to-door basis in terms of comfort and speed.
