Brennan, U.S. Navy Retired2 Thirty years ago there was a New Jersey connection to the long-lasting Iran-Iraq War. That eight years of conflict was one of the longest international two-state wars of the 20th century, beginning in September 1980 and effectively concluding in a truce in August 1988. The primary and bloody land war between Iran and Iraq began during the Iranian Hostage Crisis. The Shah had left Iran and that year the USSR invaded Afghanistan. The conflict expanded to sea and involved many neutral nations whose shipping came under attack by the combatants. The parties’ intent was to damage their opponents’ oil exports and revenues and decrease world supplies. Some suggested that Iran and Iraq wanted to draw other states into the conflict. An Iranian source explained the origin of the conflict at sea. The tanker war seemed likely to precipitate a major international incident for two reasons. First, some 70 percent of Japanese, 50 percent of West European, and 7 percent of American oil imports came from the Persian Gulf in the early 1980s. Second, the assault on tankers involved neutral shipping as well as ships of the belligerent states.3 The relatively obscure first phase began in 1981, and the well-publicized second phase began in 1984. New Jersey, half a world away from the Persian (Arabian) gulf, became involved when the United States agreed to escort Kuwait tankers in an effort to support a friendly nation and keep the international waters open. -

It has been very hot (high 80s, low 90s) the last couple of weeks. June also is start of the rainy and hurricane seasons in Florida and we have been receiving almost daily showers since late May. Hopefully our Northern members are enjoying cooler and drier air. So far this year we have had close to 600 visitors, hopefully headed for a record number of visitors for the year. Summer normally brings a decline in the number of visitors. This is a great time for visits from Scouts and other groups----can pretty much have the Museum to John Cecil themselves. Just let us know in advance when your group wants to visit (863) 385-0992 or [email protected]. We received many favorable comments on our Memorial Day observance. It was held in front of the Museum with attendees seated under a large tent. Towards the end of the observance, it began to rain and all attendees came inside the Museum where the observance was concluded. This also worked out well as we had a cake cutting ceremony planned inside to celebrate the 20th anniversary of the Museum which opened its doors as the Military Sea Services Museum on Memorial Day 1998. Compiled by Stephen Coester '63 Supplement to the List of Over Three Hundred Classmates Who Served in Vietnam 1 Phil Adams I was on the USS Boston, Guided Missile Cruiser patrolling the Vietnam Coast in '67, and we got hit above the water line in the bow by a sidewinder missile by our own Air Force. ------------------- Ross Anderson [From Ross’s Deceased Data, USNA63.org]: Upon graduation from the Academy on 5 June 1963, Ross reported for flight training at Pensacola Naval Air Station (NAS) which he completed at the top of his flight class (and often "Student of the Month") in 1964. He then left for his first Southeast Asia Cruise to begin conducting combat missions in Vietnam. Landing on his newly assigned carrier USS Coral Sea (CVA-43) at midnight, by 5 am that morning he was off on his first combat mission. That squadron, VF-154 (the Black Knights) had already lost half of its cadre of pilots. Ross' flying buddy Don Camp describes how Ross would seek out flying opportunities: Upon our return on Oct 31, 1965 to NAS Miramar, the squadron transitioned from the F-8D (Crusader) to the F4B (Phantom II). We left on a second combat cruise and returned about Jan 1967. In March or April of 1967, Ross got himself assigned TAD [temporary additional duty] to NAS North Island as a maintenance test pilot. I found out and jumped on that deal. We flew most all versions of the F8 and the F4 as they came out of overhaul. -

Vice Admiral Dixon R. Smith Deputy Chief of Naval Operations, Fleet Readiness and Logistics Vice Adm. Dixon Smith is a native of Green Farms, Connecticut, and entered the Naval Academy Preparatory School in 1978. After receiving his commission from the United States Naval Academy in 1983, he was designated a surface warfare officer in 1985. Smith holds a master’s degree in business from Webster University and is a graduate of the Army Command and General Staff College at Fort Leavenworth, Kansas. Smith’s first sea tour was aboard USS Miller (FF 1091), serving as first lieutenant and damage control assistant. Follow-on service at sea included operations officer aboard USS Jarrett (FFG 33), participating in Operation Desert Storm; operations officer aboard USS Gridley (CG 21), participating in the establishment of Operation Southern Watch over Southern Iraq; and executive officer aboard USS Antietam (CG 54). Assignments ashore include duty at Naval Education and Training Center, Newport, Rhode Island, as seamanship instructor and service as aide to the naval inspector general, Washington, D.C. Duties in Naples, Italy, as deputy executive assistant to Commander in Chief, Allied Forces, Southern Europe/Commander in Chief, U.S. Naval Forces, Europe, included service in support of the Joint Forces Commander, Operation Allied Force and Commander, Joint Task Force Noble Anvil during NATO’s operations in Kosovo. Additionally, he served a tour at the United States Naval Academy as 4th Battalion officer and Plebe Summer officer in charge. He has commanded USS The Sullivans (DDG 68), Naval Base San Diego, Navy Region Hawaii, Naval Surface Group Middle Pacific, Navy Region Southwest, Navy Region Mid-Atlantic and Navy Installations Command. -

The enormous scale of land operations in the Vietnam War and the focus of the news media on land campaigns often leads us to forget that America’s direct military involvement in Vietnam was significantly escalated by the result of a conflict at sea. In August 1964 evidence suggested that North Vietnamese torpedo boats attacked two US Navy destroyers, the USS Maddox and USS Turner Joy, patrolling near their coast in the Gulf of Tonkin. This prompted the United States to immediately rapidly ramp up its involvement on the Vietnamese Peninsula. Throughout the Vietnam War the US Navy played a major role in important combat missions, including air operations, coastal surveillance, surface gun fire support, and logistics. With a total of 1.8 million sailors serving in Southeast Asia during the conflict, the navy provided the US Military with key strategic support to conduct extensive campaigns both from the air and on land by controlling the seas, by direct attack, and by standing as a constant reminder of American military might. -

She was. built at the Seattle plant of the Todd-Pacific Shipbuilding Company. Mrs. Lance E. Massey christened the ship on Septem'ber- 12, 19^4, in honor of her late' husband,, Lieu• tenant Commander Lance E. Massey, USN, one of the early heroes of the Pacific- war. As the Commander of Torpedo Squadron Three in the Battle of Midway, Commander Massey died pressing home an assault through in• tense antiaircraft and fighter opposition that resulted In the sinking of two Japanese aircraft carriers. .On November 24, 1944, in Seattle, the USS MASSEY was officially placed in commission with Commander Charles W, Aldrich, USN,- as her first 'commanding officer. For the next week, the MASSEY continued • on her final outfitting alongside the dock before getting underway on • .'November 50 on the first of her pre-shakedown trial runs. After con• ducting various gunnery, radar, and degauslng tests and-exercises in .the.Puget Sound area, the MASSEY departed for San Diego on December 12. Here she underwent six weeks of various drills and inspections climaxed by her final military Inspection of January 25. -

Navy and Coast Guard Ships Associated with Service in Vietnam and Exposure to Herbicide Agents Background This ships list is intended to provide VA regional offices with a resource for determining whether a particular US Navy or Coast Guard Veteran of the Vietnam era is eligible for the presumption of Agent Orange herbicide exposure based on operations of the Veteran’s ship. According to 38 CFR § 3.307(a)(6)(iii), eligibility for the presumption of Agent Orange exposure requires that a Veteran’s military service involved “duty or visitation in the Republic of Vietnam” between January 9, 1962 and May 7, 1975. This includes service within the country of Vietnam itself or aboard a ship that operated on the inland waterways of Vietnam. However, this does not include service aboard a large ocean- going ship that operated only on the offshore waters of Vietnam, unless evidence shows that a Veteran went ashore. Inland waterways include rivers, canals, estuaries, and deltas. They do not include open deep-water bays and harbors such as those at Da Nang Harbor, Qui Nhon Bay Harbor, Nha Trang Harbor, Cam Ranh Bay Harbor, Vung Tau Harbor, or Ganh Rai Bay. These are considered to be part of the offshore waters of Vietnam because of their deep-water anchorage capabilities and open access to the South China Sea. In order to promote consistent application of the term “inland waterways”, VA has determined that Ganh Rai Bay and Qui Nhon Bay Harbor are no longer considered to be inland waterways, but rather are considered open water bays. -
