QATAR EXXONMOBIL OPEN: DAY 5 MEDIA NOTES Friday, January 8, 2016 Khalifa International Tennis & Squash Complex, Doha, Qatar | January 4-9, 2016 Draw: S-32, D-16 | Prize Money: $1,189,605 | Surface: Outdoor Hard ATP Info: Tournament Info: ATP PR & Marketing: www.ATPWorldTour.com www.qatartennis.org Martin Dagahs: [email protected] Twitter: @ATPWorldTour @QatarTennis Facebook: facebook.com/ATPWorldTour facebook.com/qatartennis Press Room: +974 44409620 BERDYCH, MARCHENKO SEEK SEMI-FINAL UPSETS IN DOHA SEMI-FINAL PREVIEW: Tomas Berdych attempts to end a seven-year spell when he plays Novak Djokovic on Friday for a place in the Qatar ExxonMobil Open final. Yes, Berdych has beaten the World No. 1 on the green grass of Wimbledon and the red clay of Rome. But Djokovic is 18-0 against the third-seeded Czech on hard courts. Djokovic’s dominance dates back to his first meeting with Berdych at Bangkok in 2008 and includes a 76 76 decision at Paris last fall that served as the Serb’s first-ever victory without a service break. Should Djokovic defeat Berdych again, he will reach his 16th consecutive final on tour. Ivan Lendl holds the Open Era record with 18 straight finals (1981-82) and Roger Federer advanced to 17 in a row from June 2005 to August 2006. The other semi-final is also of the David vs. Goliath variety, though Rafael Nadal and Illya Marchenko will be playing for the very first time. Nadal is vying for a spot in his 99th final; Marchenko seeks his first. The 94th-ranked Ukrainian did not gain entry into the Doha main draw until December 27, when Steve Darcis withdrew following wrist surgery. Nadal, the World No. 5, will be Marchenko’s third seeded opponent of the week. He defeated defending champion David Ferrer in the first round, then knocked off No. 7 seed Jeremy Chardy in the quarter-finals. Two teams that reunited this week will contest the doubles final on Friday. No. 3 seeds Feliciano Lopez and Marc Lopez (no relation) played together for the first time at a 2001 Challenger in São Paulo, Brazil, but had not teamed up since 2012 ATP Masters 1000 Miami. Likewise, No. 4 seeds Alexander Peya and Philipp Petzschner got their start on the ATP Challenger Tour, reaching six straight finals from 2005 to 2007. Their last event, however, was 2011 Brisbane, making their semi- final win over Wimbledon champions Jean-Julien Rojer and Horia Tecau all the more impressive.
