  • West Wing This Week Someone Who Is Not Only a Very Good Friend of Mine, but Has Been a Mentor Since I Was About 18
A Werribee Tigers promotion West Wing This week someone who is not only a very good friend of mine, but has been a mentor since I was about 18. He played 261 games with the Bulldogs. He has been very influential on my career and my life and he has a son playing AFL SW: Welcome Steve Wallis Tell us your story, you are a Leongatha boy. Wally: Yes at 16 I came down and played with the Bulldogs in the under 19 competition, so the club put me through school. I did accounting part time as well as school. I actually started work in Werribee, at Werribee Mazda, when I was 18. SW: You retired in 1996, how do you see the game these days in comparison to your days. Wally: We were only part time footballers, we only trained three times a week and usually late in the afternoon because most of us worked. I think the big change in recovery and the fitness of the players is the fulltime aspect. Being able to manage your body daily is a lot easier than when you had people working fulltime. I think they expect a lot more out of their bodies these days. The only thing that worries me watching Mitch, is wondering how long his body will hold up to the rigors of AFL . SW: You played for a long time and you played with some great players-EJ Whitten, Charlie Sutton- Only joking. Who were some of the best you played with? Wally: I was on the end of Kelvin Templeton’s career at the Bulldogs, he was a standout player.

  • Newsletter August 2017
Extracts from NEWSLETTER AUGUST 2017 A GREAT INITIATIVE OF THE “FARMERS DAY” BY KEVIN SHEEDY In the second year of the Farmers Round, the Bombers played Geelong on the MCG on Saturday May 13th. There were many stalls and entertainment for supporters outside the ground prior to the game, and Kevin Dale, a member of our Association and President of the Dick Reynolds Club and Collins Street Dons, was seen whipping up the boys before the game, it worked, because they had a great win . This event has become a great annual match and will only grow bigger in future years. Well done Sheeds. Two of our past players, Ian “Bluey” Shelton and Russell Blew, were invited to the Essendonians function prior to the game and are pictured with Peter Hughes, the President of the Essendonians. OUR ASSOCIATION SUPPORTS EFC APPLICATION TO FIELD A WOMEN’S TEAM The EFC has now officially submitted an application to the AFL to field a women’s team in the AFL in season 2019. As part of this application, we have confirmed that the same conditions would apply to women who represent the EFC at AFL or VFL to become members of our Association following their playing days, which we believe adds value to the application. There is of course no guarantee that the EFC will be granted a licence in 2019, however at some time in the future there will be a women’s team representing the club, which we should all support wholeheartedly. The article below should be of interest to all Bomber supporters.

  • Damascus Christos Tsiolkas
AUSTRALIA NOVEMBER 2019 Damascus Christos Tsiolkas The stunningly powerful new novel from the author of The Slap. Description 'They kill us, they crucify us, they throw us to beasts in the arena, they sew our lips together and watch us starve. They bugger children in front of fathers and violate men before the eyes of their wives. The temple priests flay us openly in the streets and the Judeans stone us. We are hunted everywhere and we are hunted by everyone. We are despised, yet we grow. We are tortured and crucified and yet we flourish. We are hated and still we multiply. Why is that? You must wonder, how is it we survive?' Christos Tsiolkas' stunning new novel Damascus is a work of soaring ambition and achievement, of immense power and epic scope, taking as its subject nothing less than events surrounding the birth and establishment of the Christian church. Based around the gospels and letters of St Paul, and focusing on characters one and two generations on from the death of Christ, as well as Paul (Saul) himself, Damascus nevertheless explores the themes that have always obsessed Tsiolkas as a writer: class, religion, masculinity, patriarchy, colonisation, refugees; the ways in which nations, societies, communities, families and individuals are united and divided - it's all here, the contemporary and urgent questions, perennial concerns made vivid and visceral. In Damascus, Tsiolkas has written a masterpiece of imagination and transformation: an historical novel of immense power and an unflinching dissection of doubt and faith, tyranny and revolution, and cruelty and sacrifice.
