The José Iturbi International Music Competition would be it. José Photos Iturbi was recognized as the world's greatest classical pianist during the 1930's - 1970's. Last year there were hundreds of applications submitted from contestants representing 39 NYC Spotlight countries, making this an international musical extravaganza. And in a time like this one, when so many schools are cutting their arts programs, it's wonderful to have a foundation like this one to match the investment of these young artists to help keep classical music alive." The audience was held in rapt attention as hours passed and each protégé presented their work for critical review. Finally, of course, their can only be one first prize and the 2010 honors went to Mezzo- soprano, Sasha Cooke, for vocals with a repritoire that included: Ravel - Asie (Sheherazade); R. Stanislav Khristenko walked away with the prize for Piano with a repretoir that featured Gershwin/Khistenko - The Man I Love; Granados - Spanish Dance No. 5 (Andaluza) in E minor; Liszt - Hungarian Rhapsody No. 2 with cadenza by Rachmaninov and Prokofiev - Scherzo, Op. 12. Chapel Hill 2017 Approved by: Annegret Fauser Tim Carter Mark Katz Chérie Rivers Ndaliko Jocelyn Neal ©2017 Gina Bombola ALL RIGHTS RESERVED ii ABSTRACT Gina Bombola: “Can’t Help Singing”: The “Modern” Opera Diva in Hollywood Film, 1930–1950 (Under the direction of Annegret Fauser) Following the release of Columbia Pictures’ surprise smash hit, One Night of Love (1934), major Hollywood studios sought to cash in on the public’s burgeoning interest in films featuring opera singers. For a brief period thereafter, renowned Metropolitan Opera artists such as Grace Moore and Lily Pons fared well at the box office, bringing “elite” musical culture to general audiences for a relatively inexpensive price. By the 1940s, however, the studios began grooming their own operatic actresses instead of transplanting celebrities from the stage. Stars such as Deanna Durbin, Kathryn Grayson, and Jane Powell thereby became ambassadors of opera from the highly commercial studio lot. My dissertation traces the shifts in film production and marketing of operatic singers in association with the rise of such cultural phenomena as the music-appreciation movement, all contextualized within the changing social and political landscapes of the United States spanning the Great Depression to the Cold War. Drawing on a variety of methodologies—including, among others, archival research, film analysis, feminist criticisms, and social theory—I argue that Hollywood framed opera as less of a European theatrical art performed in elite venues and more of a democratic, albeit still white, musical tradition that could be sung by talented individuals in any location.

The contest will award the highest cash prizes of any piano and singing competition worldwide. 24 pianists and 24 singers will participate in the preliminary round of competition, which was open to applicants of any nationality born between January 1, 1975 and January 1, 1990. 12 pianists and 12 singers will advance to the semi-final round and six singers and six pianists will compete in the final round. The following are short biographies of the six judges: Daniel Pollack's concert career has taken him worldwide across five continents. A soloist with major orchestras in the U.S. including the New York Philharmonic, Los Angeles Philharmonic and San Francisco Symphony; he has also performed with the Moscow State Philharmonic, London's Royal Philharmonic, Bergen Symphony, Norway, and Seoul Philharmonic, among others.   • El Espectacular José Iturbi: La Aplicación De Los Códigos Visuales Del Musical Clásico Americano a La Música De Concierto
    Musicología en el siglo XXI: nuevos retos, nuevos enfoques EL ESPECTACULAR JOSÉ ITURBI: LA APLICACIÓN DE LOS CÓDIGOS VISUALES DEL MUSICAL CLÁSICO AMERICANO A LA MÚSICA DE CONCIERTO Vicente G ALBIS LÓPEZ Resumen: El pianista español José Iturbi multiplicó su popularidad internacional gracias a su participación en siete películas de la Metro Goldwyn Mayer entre 1943 y 1949. En estos filmes, mayoritariamente adscritos al género musical, Iturbi –que siempre se interpretaba a sí mismo- actuó con figuras de la envergadura de Judy Garland o Gene Kelly. En este artículo no se pretende comentar la calidad interpretativa o el repertorio del pianista valenciano. Esta propuesta se basa en un enfoque diferente: se pretende analizar, a través de diferentes fragmentos, la aplicación de los códigos visuales del musical cinematográfico de aquella época (espectacularidad, irrealidad, ruptura formal y narrativa, etc.) a la interpretación de piezas de autores como Liszt o Rachmaninov. Las escenas seleccionadas pertenecen a dos de sus películas, Levando anclas (1945) y Festival en Méjico (1946), dirigidas, de forma significativa, por el mismo cineasta: George Sydney. Junto al análisis, se ofrece una propuesta de explicación del origen de las influencias que Sydney utiliza para crear esas imágenes innovadoras en la filmación de este repertorio. En definitiva, el estudio de estas escenas permite constatar una forma distinta de transmitir visualmente la música de concierto. Por último, se propone un breve comentario sobre la influencia que estos fragmentos ejercieron en audiovisuales posteriores, diferentes al musical clásico americano.
