For he clave to the LORD, and departed not from following him, but kept his commandments, which the LORD commanded Moses.” 2 Kings 18:5, 6 Bible Marking Hezekiah - 2 Kings 18 2 Kings 18:1 - “Hezekiah” - Means “strengthened of Yahweh”. It was only through Yahweh’s strength that the reformation was accomplished, that Hezekiah was healed, and that Assyria was defeated. So great was Hezekiah, that we are given 3 records of his life (Kings, Chronicles and Isaiah). A Reformation on Divine Principles Mark above & “Ahaz” - Means “possessor”, ie. a selfish man, below 2 Kg 18 who was Judah’s worst king Ahaz had given himself over to idolatry, following the examples of those who had left the truth (2 Chron 28:1-2), and 2 Kings 18:2 - “Abi” - The margin has - ‘Abijah, of the world in general (2 Kg 16:3, 10-11). Isaiah 62:1-5 Every So Often We Hear the Rumors That Jesus Was Married
Sermon Lesson: Isaiah 62:1-5 Every so often we hear the rumors that Jesus was married. A number of years ago, there was a bestselling book and a hit movie in which Jesus was secretly married to Mary Magdalene. Supposedly, they had a child, whose bloodline still exists today and the church has covered it up for centuries. It’s just not true. The Bible gives no indication that Jesus was married, but plenty of evidence to the contrary. It’s not that Jesus took a vow of celibacy thinking that it’s more pleasing to God to remain single than to get married. From Bethlehem, he had the world’s salvation in mind and wouldn’t be distracted from that goal. But that doesn’t mean Jesus looked down on marriage, either. He took time out of his busy schedule to attend the wedding at Cana and blessed it with his first miracle. Throughout Scripture he pictures his relationship with his people as that of a husband and wife. Today, through Isaiah, the Lord tells us that he Takes Pride in his Bride. She is the crown of his splendor and is called by a new name. Isaiah gives us the maiden name of Christ’s bride: “Zion and Jerusalem.” Jerusalem, of course, was the capital city of Israel and the home of God’s temple. Zion was one of the hills on which Jerusalem was built. With unbridled enthusiasm the Lord declares that he “will not keep silent” about the righteousness and purity of his people. His beautiful bride shines like a gorgeous sunrise or like a blazing torch cutting through the darkness of night. -
He Text of Today's Gospel Is, I Am Sure, Very Familiar to You, and I Am Sure
21st Sunday A he text of today’s gospel is, I am sure, very familiar to you, and I am sure you have T heard many homilies on the confession of Peter’s faith and Our Lord’s entrustment to him of the keys of heaven. So precisely because of that, I am going to focus more today on the first reading from the prophet Isaiah. It is often said that we Catholics don’t know the Bible – and if all we read are short snippets like today’s, of course, that is inevitable. So let’s put the first reading in context. Isaiah tells us that Shebna, the Master of the palace – King Hezekiah’s chancellor – was dismissed and replaced by Eliakim, the son of Hilkiah. And Isaiah continues: I place the key of the House of David on his shoulder; should he open, no one shall close, should he close, no one shall open. Now what’s all that about? King Hezekaiah was the son of Ahaz. Ahaz – a young king, he was only 20 when he came to the throne of the Southern Kingdom, that is, of Judah, and 36 when he died - had followed a policy of accepting the over-lordship of the Assyrians. He gained peace for Judah by paying a tax or tribute to Assyria. But he went further: travelling to Damascus, he pledged allegiance to Tiglath-Pileser, and worshipped the Assyrian gods. He had Assyrian artifacts set up in the temple in Jerusalem, and temples to the Assyrian gods set up in Judah. -

1 Jesus Christ, the Key of David Isaiah 22:15-25 Introduction: In Isaiah 22, the Lord sent Isaiah to make an announcement to a government official named Shebna, who served Hezekiah, the king of Judah. The news he had for Shebna was not good. Shebna had, apparently, used his position to increase his own wealth and glory, and had usurped authority which did not belong to him. Shebna received the news that he would soon be abruptly removed from his office. Isaiah also announced that another man (named Eliakim) would take his place, who would administer the office faithfully. This new man would be a type of Jesus Christ. Isaiah 22:15-25 I. The fall of self-serving Shebna (vv. 15-19) In verse 15, the Lord sent Isaiah to deliver a message to Shebna, who was the treasurer in the government of Judah. He is also described as being “over the house.” This particular position was first mentioned in the time of Solomon. (Apparently, the office did not exist in the days of King Saul or King David, because it is not mentioned.) Afterward, it became an important office both in the northern and southern kingdoms. 1 Kings 4:1-6; 16:9; 18:3 2 Kings 10:5 The office of the man who was “over the house” of the king of Judah seems to have increased in importance over time, until it was similar to the Egyptian office of vizier. Joseph had been given this incredibly powerful position in the government of Pharaoh. (In fact, this position seems to have been created, for the first time, in Joseph’s day.) Joseph possessed all the power of the Pharaoh. -

MOTYER It is a problem common to the study of all prophetic texts how to make a legitimate appeal to the work of editors and insertionists in order to understand the meaning of a passage or section. Regarding the passage in hand, for example, Duhm proposes that verse 17 is a glossator's clumsy attempt to link Isaiah 7:1-16 with 18-25, and considers verses 18-25 to be the work of 'a collector of Isaianic fragments'.1 Kissane, however, urges that 'the problem here is really one of inter- pretation' and further comments: 'Various critics omit 15 or 16 or 16b or 17; but the sole reason for the omission is the diffi- culty of interpretation.'2 The matter may be put thus: it is not that the concept of the editing of a prophetic text or book is itself at fault, but that it appears not to be taken with sufficient seriousness by those who appeal most frequently to it. The 'editor' must not be made a scapegoat. Rather than treat him as one who juxta- posed two passages which seemed to him to be coherent but are easily seen by us not to be so, we should and must assume him to be an intelligent publicist of the mind and matter of his subject. And if, as seems to be the case, there is increasing readiness to allow that the prophets could and did act as their own editors, then all the more must we seek to implement the principle of the priority of exegetical considerations. -

Before his ascen- sion to the throne, there were many structural defects in the kingdom. The immediate task before him was how to restructure and re-engi- neer the socio-religious decay he met on the ground, to which he responded promptly and with a record of success. This paper, there- fore, through narrative analysis, identifies the leadership and follow- ership qualities that assisted Josiah in his reform policy in Southern Israel and recommends, through content analysis, the imbibing of those qualities by the Nigerian leaders and citizenry in their quest for a sustained democracy. A INTRODUCTION The concept of democracy is traceable to the ancient Greeks, specifically the city-state of Athens in the fifth century BCE. The word democracy is derived from two Greek words “demos” meaning the people and “kratos,” meaning “power” or “rule.”1 Defining democracy is a herculean task because there is no universally acceptable definition. However, it has been defined by various schol- ars based on the features that a true democracy must have. 1 Allan MacRae, Isaiah 7-12: Lecture 4 This is lecture 4 delivered by Dr. Allan MacRae at Biblical Theological Seminary on Isaiah 7-12: Now I want to say a few words about the assignment for today. There was much variety in the answers, as would be expected. Most of these assignments are not a test on how well you can do anything but they are intended to get you into the problem, to get you to try to see what you can do with it, and to get the problems in your mind so that then we can discuss them intelligently together. Now in this course there is one thing we can all agree on: that chapters 7-12 are one unit. We don’t have time in this class to look at what follows and precedes to see evidence for that, but it is definitely one unit. Perhaps on the scale we were using you would need 4 lines before and after chapters 7-12, then within that area there are many short sections, some of which belong rather closely together. So there are many places where we could make a small division, but knowing where the larger division should be made is not easy. I think the archbishop did one of the worst jobs he did in the Bible in this section, chapters 7-12, because there is only one of the chapter divisions which seems to be reasonably placed. Just briefly we will glance at that now. You will notice that in chapter 7 we are reading about the attack being made by the people from Samaria and from Damascus and how God is going to protect Judah from them. -

Introduction The Hebrew Scriptures (or the Old Testament) feature three main characters: king, priest and prophet. Of course, God is to be Israel’s king: in the beginning, God makes an irrevocable covenant with Israel; he leads the Israelites out of Egypt in the Exodus; reaffirms the covenant at Mount Sinai; tests the Israelites throughout their 40-year wilderness experience; and finally, under Joshua’s leadership, moves them into the land of Canaan—the “Promised Land”—where they dislodge (to some degree) the indigenous people who live there: the Canaanites, Hittites, Amorites, Perizzites, Hivites and Jebusites (Judges 3: 5-6).
