    Glossary Academic Year: A year beginning on August 1 of one calendar year and ending on July 31 of the following calendar year. Administrator: A USAC Regional Coordinator or the person designated by the Local Association. Amateur Class: The amateur class comprises riders in the senior/elite age group (19-29) who are not members of UCI teams, or, in the case of women, not on domestic elite teams. Bicycle Race: Competition among persons using bicycles where awards are given on the basis of relative performance. Cannibalizing: Taking any part or component from one bicycle to repair another, or to improve the result of another. Category: An ability-based designation for riders. Riders in the same age class may race in groups based on ability category. Class: An age-based designation, such as junior, U23, Elite, or master. Club Ride: A training ride open only to members of bicycle clubs that are members of USA Cycling or a race that is open only to members of one such club and any participant who holds a USA Cycling racing license must be licensed as a member of that club. Combined Division Race: A race in which riders from both divisions compete. Criterium: A road event held on a small course entirely closed to traffic. The length of the course is between 800 m and 5 km. The minimum width throughout the course should be 7 m. Cross Country: A massed-start competition that is held on a circuit course comprising forest roads, forest or field trails, and unpaved dirt or gravel roads.

Its role is focused on the responsible and accountable management of the event, maintaining and enhancing the excellent reputation and identifying opportunities to improve and add value to the experience and achieve- ments of participants and volunteers alike. To date the event has raised and distributed in excess of $1,145,000. Beneficiaries include: Cairns School of Distance Education, Primary Schools – Mt Garnet, Mt Surprise, Georgetown, Croydon, Normanton and Karumba as well as child care centres, sports associations and more. The event’s success is largely dependent on an enthusiastic group of volunteers. These vol- unteers work hard – before, during and after the event – to give you a great cycling holiday, so make sure you thank them. And, THANK YOU too, for coming on ‘our’ ride! Our Mission Statement By raising funds and riding from Cairns to Karumba we connect students in Far North Queensland with educational opportunities. We have skilled people who lead teams to sustain a well organised ride through spectacular country side. Multiple options are available to make this ride a unique and personalised event that connects ride participants to each community along the road. I had just done the MM 1K two years earlier and was feeling like it was time to do another Sad- dle Sore 1000. I contacted Howard Entman to get the info on doing this ride. The following is a brief note of the ride and its history. Each year the lives of many fellow motorcy- cle riders and loved ones are cut short. In their memory, a group of the World’s Toughest Rid- ers will participate in a Saddle Sore 1000 on one of three weekends, September 22-23, September 29-30, or October 6-7. We hope to have rider’s participation in all 50 states, in all of the Canadian provinces, and in several countries around the world. These dates were selected because the weather across the world is generally good—not to hot and not to cold. The IBA (Iron Butt Association will issue a special certificate for this event.
