GOLF QUALIFIER ARRIVES SUNDAY induction to Sports Hall of Fame On August 28, Special Olympic athletes from across the GTA will gather at Aurora’s Westview Golf Club to compete in the Regional Conference Provincial Qualifying Tournament. This is the first time a qualifying event has been held in Aurora. The tournament will welcome over 70 golfers from the GTA, along with the support of numerous volunteers. Athletes at this event will be competing to reserve a position in the Provincial Games taking place in 2017. Aurorans have opened their hearts and provided much needed assistance to the Eagles through volunteer support and monetary donations. Westview Golf Club, in particular, has been a key ingredient in the Eagle’s development. Westview has sponsored the Eagles since the team’s formation by providing Special Olympic golfers with green fees, carts, and driving range practice. “The Aurora Eagles and Westview have been a great fit,” says Mike Nisbet, Sales and Events Director at Westview Golf Club. “The Eagles have become an integral part of the club since their arrival. When we were approached about hosting the Provincial Qualifier we were thrilled. It is a great opportunity for the community to recognize and celebrate the hard work and dedication of these local athletes, coaches and volunteers.” For more information on the Provincial Qualifier tournament or Special Olympics Ontario – Aurora, please contact Julie at [email protected].

Summer winding down and folks returning from vacation mode to prepare for the beginning of school year means only one thing to me. It will soon be time for the largest community event in York Region once again. One that has raised over 9 million dollars in support of hundreds of local organizations. This will be the 28th version of the Magna Hoedown. Although people are now turning their attention to and formulating their plans to attend, those of us involved in the planning and execution of this great event have been hard at it for months. The event has always been incredible and this year, we have assembled all the ingredients to bring this community the best show ever! I am always asked about Magna’s commitment to the event. Magna continues to cover all the costs related to Hoedown. It is a community fundraiser, a not a for-profit event. Heritage, architecture and community enthusiasts from as far away as Kitchener and Cornwall fanned out across Aurora on Saturday for the annual Doors Open Aurora, taking in over 15 sites of local interest. (Top Row) A community corn roast, whipped up Councillor Tom Mrakas, Mayor Geoff Dawe, and Councillors Sandra Humfryes and John Abel, was just one of many attractions at the Aurora Farmers’ Market. Cindy Shaver of the Aurora Public Library put library patrons in the picture. Artist Jose Kondooparampil captures Hillary House in paint as the Aurora Historical Society welcomed guests to their new First World War exhibition. (Second Row) Eric and Eva of Toronto make their first trip to the famed gardens at Merlin’s Hollow. Adara Vhim gets an up-close view of one of the Queen’s York Rangers vehicles. Inside the armoury Troopers Ry Church, Ethan Yee, and Matt Greig sold Vimy Pins to raise money for the cadets’ trip to Vimy Ridge next year. (Third Row) Visitors got a rare peek inside the Rising Sun Masonic Lodge. A former student at Church Street School, 99-year-old Doris Videan and her daughter, were back at the school again where they caught up with Bob McRoberts. Historian David Heard displays a brick from the fire ravaged Aurora United Church during his Block 11 – Aurora’s Historic Precinct Walking Tour. (Third Row) Volunteer Andrea shows off where the Sheppard family marked their children’s heights at the Charles Henry Sheppard House, now home to the Windfall Ecology Centre at Sheppard’s Bush. Reza and Roya Haghieri welcome guests to Vic’s Shoe Repair. Volunteers also were on hand to interpret both chapels at Trinity Anglican Church. (Bottom Row) Patrick House on Temperance Street was a hub for art. Long-time Theatre Aurora member Jo-anne Spitzer displays costumes as theatre tours were carried out throughout the day. Devin tries his hand at Earth Day Canada’s Earth Play Pop-Up Adventure Playground.
