Participants learnt how to assess for injury (above), and learnt basic CPR (top right) before practising on dummies with demo defibrillators (below right). On 27th November, Ickenham Youth Football Club (IYFC) invited two trainers from the Football Association to lead a special training session to instruct over 30 IYFC adult members and volunteers on how to use IPAD Semi-Automatic Defibrillators. The trainers had previously worked in the Ambulance Service and currently deliver the FA’s Emergency Aid courses. The training was needed because IYFC has recently bought five brand new IPAD Semi-Automatic Defibrillators which have since been deployed across Ickenham. The grant to buy these expensive machines came from Nexen Cnooc, following a successful bid by IYFC and IYFC is very grateful to them for their considerable support. IYFC were pointed in Nexen’s direction by Amrit Samrai, herself an IYFC volunteer with two sons in the Club. On the training night, the adults learned how to assess for injury, place a person in the Recovery Position, administer CPR and, of course, learn how to use the new defibrillator machines. The ‘hands on’ training provided plenty of opportunities to ask questions, have a go using demonstration defibrillators - and also to be the ‘unconscious’ person! Over the next three years, a further 60+ IYFC volunteers will also receive defibrillator training, which has formed part of the FA’s Emergency Aid course since August 2017. All IYFC Team Managers have to take a refresher Emergency Aid course every three years. “As more defibrillators appear in public places, so the knowledge and confidence gained from attending our Club’s training course may well end up helping a complete stranger in the future,” said a Club representative. And the implications of this training and the new defibrillators could be far reaching. According to the British Heart Foundation, less than 10% of people survive an out-of-hospital cardiac arrest in the UK, but these odds improve dramatically when a defibrillator is available. So IYFC is particularly proud that the new defibrillators are now on standby to benefit the wider Ickenham community too. The Ambulance Service has been advised of the precise location of all 5 machines and they can direct anyone calling the emergency services to the nearest defibrillator as and when needed. Remember – when calling the emergency services from a mobile phone, always dial the alternative emergency 112 number (rather than 999) because mobile calls to 112 allow the emergency controllers to pinpoint your exact location via the GPS tracking on your mobile phone – which could be crucial to saving a life. NEW BEGINNINGS I write this article on a very cold day just after the start of the New Year. At the URC we are still in a state of flux, with all the building work going on, and juggling to carry out our normal church life with services and activities, and fulfilling our lettings commitments. By the time you read this article, the work will be completed and the new beginnings starting to flourish. I am sure all of our great community is looking forward to the new beginnings of spring whilst we at the URC are also looking forward to the new beginnings and enhancement of our church life. With the building work completed we envisage lots of new and exciting things growing and expanding at the URC. We started with a bequest some seven or eight years ago. This was followed by many discussions and meetings which flowered into an idea followed by consultations and eventually translated into an architect’s drawing. This all looked fine but the bequest was not enough to cover the cost of the project. With ideas of funding flowing from the Development Committee and church members, along with help from Thames North Synod, the final sum was achieved. Eventually Hillingdon Borough Council gave its consent to the plans and in August 2017 work commenced and we were up and running. As the building progressed the Eldership and members of the church could see in bricks and mortar what were the visions and hopes that started as a plan. We could see that it was achieving our initial dreams of encompassing the existing church space into the complete floor plan of the buildings. It has given us the necessary extra space to expand our work and help us all on our spiritual journey, bring people together in a comfortable and welcoming environment. It has truly been a lot of hard work bringing people together in faith, with a joyous spirit and companionship. The seeds have been sown, the acorns planted and the growth begins. We are on a journey which will grow and grow. There is no looking back; join us in going forward together. JOHN MILLER, URC ELDER A CLEAN SLATE Dear friends, January’s New Year resolutions have probably long since flown out of the window – the desire to lose weight that wasn’t quite enough to change the way you eat; a sense that drinking a glass of wine every dinner time might be too much didn’t quite spur you to leave the bottle on the wine rack… And now we are about to enter Lent, with all that ‘giving up’ and introspection as we examine our failure to live up to our own best, much less the perfection of Jesus Christ. I am hugely comforted by the fact that King David, described by Samuel the prophet as ‘a man after God’s own heart’ was imperfect. His lust after Bathsheba led him to commit adultery and then murder, yet he dared to ask God for forgiveness, to be washed as white as snow, to have his slate wiped clean. Whether it’s a conversation that’s gone a bit wrong, or a situation we could have handled better, I wonder how often we wish we could wipe the slate clean and start again? “To err is human, to forgive is divine,” said Alexander Pope. David knew that he was flawed. But he also knew that he was loved. Absolutely. Always. Unconditionally. And forever. By the God of love who created him. And so he dared to ask God for forgiveness. Forgiveness and love go hand in hand. Only the one who knows him or herself to be loved is secure enough to offer forgiveness to another, and only the one who knows him or herself to be loved is able to make themselves vulnerable enough to seek forgiveness. Lent is an opportunity to look inwards. It’s hard to be honest enough to own our flaws, and that’s the reason I choose to give up something for Lent. When I miss the tea/coffee/chocolate/alcohol (whatever) I am reminded of the quest I’m on to ‘own’ my failings, and make myself vulnerable enough to ask God for a clean slate and a fresh start. Like Victor Hugo, I have learnt that “the greatest happiness of life is the conviction that we are loved; loved for ourselves, or rather, loved in spite of ourselves.” Lent starts on 14th February this year, a good day to seek God’s Love. With love, Felicity PLEASE NOTE: Felicity’s email address for church related issues has changed to [email protected]

ST GILES’ ADVENT BLESSING BAGS Following a suggestion by Anne Whitlam, generous members of the St Giles’ congregation each put together a bag of small treats (one small treat for each day of Advent). They assembled 54 bags which were taken to Pastor Vine at the Hillingdon Food Bank to accompany the food parcels donated to the same needy cause. The Pastor was surprised and delighted at the generous and beautifully presented gifts and said he was sure that each bag would bring a light to the family who received it. He hoped that we would like to do it again next year! Anne said, “I know that people put a lot of thought into what went into their bags and many said they felt blessed by the giving – so the bags were twice blessed – both in the giving and in the receiving.” AFN

DR J P RANDERIA It is with sorrow that Dr Jamshed Randeria’s family have to announce his peaceful death following a heart operation. His funeral was held just before Christmas. He lived and worked in Ickenham for over 45 years as a homoeopathic and osteopathic physician and we know his patients will miss his caring dedication, wealth of medical expertise and sense of humour. He was a Zoroastrian – the ancient religion of Persia with the monotheist doctrine: Good Thoughts, Good Words, Good Deeds. And this informed his medical life and outlook as well. On the wall of his surgery was a framed poster of the 1927 poem by the American writer, Max Ehrmann, called ‘Desiderata’. The last sentences of which are: “…Be at peace with God, whatever you conceive God to be. And whatever your labors and aspirations, in the noisy confusion of life, keep peace in your soul. With all its sham, drudgery and broken dreams, it is still a beautiful world. Be cheerful. Strive to be happy.” The family is planning a memorial celebration for him at the end of May, when it would have been his 80th birthday. If you’d like to be kept informed, please let the family know. There is also a charity fund in his name, collecting for orphanages in India. To contribute please either contact the family or go online to www.justgiving.com and search for “Dr Jamshed Randeria”. His family would like to thank the very kind and humbling good wishes, recollections and support from the community, friends, neighbours, colleagues and patients. WOMEN’S WORLD DAY OF PRAYER COMPASS RESOURCE On Friday 2nd March, Ickenham URC will host the Women’s World Day of Prayer, to include participants from local churches including the Anglican, URC, Catholic and Methodist churches. This initiative is a worldwide movement of Christian women of many traditions, who come together in over 170 countries to observe a common day of prayer on the first Friday of March. This year the focus will be on the Suriname (formerly Dutch Guiana), and the theme “All God’s Creation is Very Good”. Afterwards, refreshments will be served in the church hall. Everyone is welcome (men as well as women) and we would very much like to see you there. For further details, please contact Anne Whitlam on 01895 678169 or Diana May on 01895 234813

ICKENHAM CHURCH NEWS FEBRUARY/MARCH 2018 5

GREEN FINGERS David Edington, (right top) Ickenham’s well known gardener, is shown in the picture pruning trees in St Giles’ churchyard, as he has been doing since he was a growing lad of 13 years. He started then by helping Harry Ackroyd, then St Giles’ Church Warden, and probably the church’s first ever ‘Holy Mower’ – the affectionate name given to that happy band of helpers who keep the churchyard shipshape. Apart from young David’s help, Harry’s was a solo act and he confined his churchyard activities to tending the lawns at the front of the church so that they looked their best in wedding photographs etc., whereas these days, the Holy Mowers look after the whole churchyard, including all the trees, paths and grave surrounds. In the early 1970s Norman Smith took over a small garden centre on Ickenham High Road and renamed it Ickenham Garden Centre. By the mid-1980s he was needed to take over from his father at Smith’s Nurseries in New Denham. David, who had been Norman’s COMPASS RESOURCE Saturday (and Sunday) boy for a couple of years, bought the garden centre from him at the tender age of 19. This he owned and ran successfully for 17 years until given sudden notice to quit by the land-owner, who intended to develop the land, but failed to obtain planning permission. As we know, the site, which includes ‘Pete’s Cottages’, laid idle until the present time when the site has been partially cleared awaiting planning permission. In the intervening 15 years, David set up and continues to run a successful business working alone doing gardening jobs mainly for appreciative Ickenham residents. Meanwhile, David married local lass Jenny in St Giles’ Church and they have two children, Michael and Catherine, both happily settled at university. All four Edingtons were educated at Breakspear School, but to differing degrees of success! Looking to give something back to the community, David joined the Ickenham Festival Team, where he was soon appointed Chairman and has since made a huge impact by overseeing the introduction of many new ideas. The Ickenham Open Gardens scheme is one initiative he is most proud of where some 20+ gardens open during Festival Week raising many thousands of pounds for charity. Despite the demands on his time, he still helps out in the churchyard from time to time and his van can be found most days outside one or more Ickenham properties. IMPORTANT ANNOUNCEMENT - FORTHCOMING EVENTS After 12 years of voluntary service to the ICN magazine, Patricia Lee has now stepped down from her role as Forthcoming Events sub-editor to take full advantage of her retirement years. Edwin Lee will step down from his role as Advertising Manager during 2018. We thank them for all their exceptional hard work over the years and wish them both all the very best. Their roles have not yet been filled so if you have some spare time each month and would like to put ‘something back’ into the community, please get in touch and find out more by emailing Felicity at [email protected]. Patricia’s retirement means that there is now no Forthcoming Events sub-editor, and the email is no longer monitored. With immediate effect, all forthcoming events and meeting details must be entered via the new ICN website at www.ickenhamchurchnews.co.uk, and only via the website. PDFs or Word documents may still additionally be sent to the ICN editor in case there is space in the main copy and the opportunity arises to give an event extra coverage, but the main details must still be entered onto the website form, by the church group, club or society. All forthcoming events and meeting details emailed to the editor or any other member of the team will be returned to the sender for entering onto the website. We know that this change may cause anxiety but, in the absence of a volunteer to replace Patricia’s role, we have had no choice. The system has been checked and made as simple as possible and more robust too, so it is difficult to miss out important details. However, if you are having problems, please do get in touch and someone will ‘walk you through’ the process. After moderation, all events will appear automatically on the Forthcoming Events calendar on the website, where all events will show as many details as have been entered. Events will then also be added into the relevant hardcopy ICN with no further input from the church groups, clubs or societies. Furthermore, when viewed online, any and all events can be added directly into the Calendar on your phone/laptop/device with just a click of a button. We hope that this will be an exciting improvement and allow more events to be publicised around Ickenham at short notice and independently of the ICN deadlines. Please do give this new system your fullest support. Please note that Patricia Lee has kindly agreed to continue to receive donations to the ICN as at present.

NEW PREMISES, NEW BUYING OPPORTUNITIES 2017 was a good year for fund raising at the URC, despite the problems caused by the building work for our new extension. Over £7,500 was raised overall, over £1,000 more than in 2016, with £638 being sent to each of our four external charities chosen for the year. As ever none of this would have been possible without the generosity of the good people of Ickenham in giving us lots of stuff and then coming to buy it back again! Now we start a new year with the extension complete and will be inviting our donors and customers to come and have a look! Our first event will be a Coffee Morning and Coin Mountain on Saturday 10th February from 10am-12noon, admission free. There will be the usual array of lovely homemade cakes and you are invited to bring along any spare coins (or notes!) to go on the mountain. This will be followed on Saturday 10th March by our monster Spring Jumble Sale, 10am-12noon, admission 50p. As usual, we will be looking out for quality items for our Auction on 12th May (please note the date) so don’t hesitate to give us things that are “too good for jumble”! Donations can be brought to the church on Friday 9th March between 3pm-7pm or please ring Richard Piper on 01895 634348 for collection. This is an exciting new beginning for us and we hope that you will want to be part of it! RICHARD PIPER
