Objectives and Activities The PCC is committed to witnessing to the Christian Gospel through worship, nurture, pastoral care, and service for – as far as this is possible – all who live in this diverse multi-faith parish. We seek: - to maintain the tradition of prayer and worship that has taken place here since 1828 through regular services, the provision of occasional offices (Baptisms, Weddings and Funerals), and individual pastoral care; - to nurture the worshipping community through preaching and teaching – Sunday School, preparation for First Communion and Confirmation, programmes centred on the themes of the year; - to provide opportunities for service to the wider community through the provision of space in our crypt and hall for voluntary groups and social businesses; - to engage in an exploration of spirituality and culture through engagement with a wide range of artists and artistic forms; - to facilitate these objectives, and to relate them to our Christian heritage, by maintaining and developing our buildings, especially the grade 1 listed church, designed by Sir John Soane. Membership Members of the PCC are either ex-officio or elected by the Annual Parochial Church Meeting (APCM) in accordance with the Church Representation Rules. During the year the following served as members of the PCC or assisted in the running of church activities. Elected members: John Barlatt Clare Barnett (Electoral Roll officer) Philip Cahill Pearl Charles John Cunningham (from April 2012) Julian Harrison (until February 2013) Henrietta Hazeley-Jones Johanna Kaschke, (Secretary from April 2012 until September 2012) Jim McKee, Vice-Chair Louise Marson Patricia Shaw (until April 2012) Rachael Twomey (co-opted November 2012) Jemima Wilberforce (until April 2012) Ex-officio members: Incumbent The Reverend Prebendary Alan Green, Chair Associate Vicar The Reverend Fiona Green (until October 2012) Assistant Curate The Reverend Stuart Lee Churchwarden Debra Frame (Safeguarding Officer) Churchwarden Stan White Deanery Synod Representative Angela Broome Deanery Synod Representative Barbara Perrott (Stewardship Officer) Other Church Officers Project Manager Donna McDonald Organist David Spidy Aim and Purposes St John’s Parochial Church Council (PCC) has the responsibility of cooperating with the incumbent, the Reverend Prebendary Alan Green, in promoting the ecclesiastical parish, the whole mission of the Church, pastoral, evangelistic, social and ecumenical. Page 4 AT The Parochial Church Council of the Ecclesiastical Parish of the St. John on Bethnal Green Team Ministry (A Parochial Church Council registered as a Charity) Annual Report of the PCC for the year ended 31 December 2012 The method of appointment of PCC members is set out in the Church Representation Rules. At St John’s the membership of the PCC consists of the parish clergy, churchwardens and members elected by those members of the congregation who are on the electoral roll of the church. All who regularly attend our services are encouraged to register on the Electoral Roll and stand for election to the PCC. The PCC members are responsible for making decisions on all matters of general concern and importance to the parish including deciding on how the funds of the PCC are to be spent. The full PCC met ten times in 2012 with an average level of attendance of 70%. Given its wide responsibilities the PCC has a number of committees - Standing, Building Projects, Arts and Events, and Stewardship – and all are responsible to the PCC and report back to it with minutes of their decisions being received by the full PCC and discussed as necessary. Accomplishments Prayer and Worship All of the diverse activity at St John's is underpinned by a commitment to regular worship. To this end we have maintained the pattern of the Eucharist and Morning Prayer through the year. The weekly major act of worship is the Sung Eucharist on Sunday morning, with three other celebrations (Tuesday lunchtime, Wednesday evening and Saturday morning) each week. They vary little in their essential structure (Common Worship Rite A, except on Saturdays when the Book of Common Prayer is used) and variety is provided by focussing on the themes of the Christian Year. Our intention is to provide a modern, Catholic, ordered and reflective liturgy that provides regular worshippers with a firm basis from which to engage with the themes of each season and to provide for newcomers and occasional visitors a form that is easy to follow and participate in. We seek to balance the traditional nature of the liturgy with a light touch by the clergy and Sidespeople who are both welcoming and respectful of the needs of the congregation. Our services attract a very diverse range of people, partly due to the diverse nature of Tower Hamlets, but also because of the church's location – so that each Sunday there will be visitors and tourists, some with little grasp of English or the nature of our church denominations, and those with less-ordered lives seeking solace and spiritual or material help. To respond to those spiritual needs we have our monthly services of healing and wholeness, and for the material needs we maintain our food cupboard. Our average Sunday attendance is about 50. The celebration of Easter and Christmas attract much larger congregations – Easter Eve and Easter Morning had a combined congregation of 119, and Christmas Eve and Morning 133. Morning Prayer is said each morning in church except Fridays and ensures that all the activities that take place in church, crypt and hall and all the tasks taken on by the clergy are undergirded by a rhythm of prayer. We are always very pleased when other congregation members or visitors join us for this service. The church hosted a number of special services through the year. The annual Bethnal Green Tube Disaster Memorial Service took place in March, with 350 people present to hear the reading of the names of those who died and an address from Leon Silver of the Nelson Street Synagogue. For the duration of the Olympics and Paralympics we committed to keeping the church open daily from 9am until 5pm in order that people could find some peace and quiet amidst all the activity of that period. For much of that time volunteers were in church to invigilate and to engage with those who came in – some visiting the area but quite a few living or working locally. In the coming year we hope to find further opportunities to increase the time the church is open. In November we hosted an All Souls Memorial Service on behalf of the local undertaker W.English, to which 175 people came to remember their recently departed relatives. St John's Primary School held three services in the church through the year, and Raine's School once again held their Carol Service here.
