Prospectus Upper Hutt College UPPER HUTT COLLEGE PROSPECTUS 2019 2 WELCOME Welcome to Upper Hutt College Upper Hutt College is a thriving, energetic and successful learning community. We offer a broad and diverse curriculum that is well-suited to the needs of our students and our community. In the junior school, accelerate and learning assistance classes are offered and students have an exciting range of option subjects from which to choose. In the senior school, an extensive range of courses ensure our students learn and are extended at every level. Excellent NCEA results reflect the commitment to teaching and learning from both teachers and students. Our students are involved in a wide range of activities outside the classroom, including traditional and newer sporting activities, cultural and social activities and the performing arts. Considerable success is achieved by students at a local, national and international level. Students’ well-being and their connections to the school are strengthened through a strong House system. House activities encourage student participation and involvement, and provide opportunities for genuine student leadership – within the school and the wider Upper Hutt community. Form classes develop and affirm the ongoing connection between home and school as well as offering a small and welcoming base for students new to the college. Our school campus – recently rebult - gives our students the modern and attractive classrooms and learning spaces they deserve, and enhances the learning experience – our students can grow, shine and be recognised within a safe, supportive and orderly learning environment. Upper Hutt College is a PB4L (Positive Behaviour for Learning) school, where we are working on the positive behaviours that support and enhance improved student learning. A number of initiatives have been introduced that focus on our PB4L values of Respect, Responsibility, Resilience and Manaakitanga, and students and staff are all enjoying the more positive learning environment that we are building. These are exciting times for our school, as we make clear and visible progress towards our vision for Upper Hutt College - a vibrant and modern learning environment that will engage and empower every learner to realise their full potential. MISSION STATEMENT Upper Hutt College is a community, passionate about learning, that encourages pride, participation and excellence. 2 ACADEMIC SUCCESS Upper Hutt College has continued to raise the academic achievement of our students, particularly with their NCEA results. In 2017, 83% of Year 11 students gained NCEA Level 1. Academic success begins in the junior school, where our Certificate ofAchievement provides regular ongoing academic success as well as key behavioural competencies. Testing is completed in literacy and numeracy to identify learning needs. In Year 10, many subjects offer an NCEA standard. Depending on the options students choose, students could enter Year 11 with around 15 – 20 credits towards the 80 required at NCEA Level 1. We also offer a Year 11 placement in one subject to the highest achievers moving into Year 10. Last year, 6 students were so placed and each achieved excellent academic results in this subject. Our literacy and numeracy rates at Year 11 are very high – both around 90% for our entire Year 11 cohort. We recognise academic success in a number of ways, including an Academic assembly where those who have achieved Merit and Excellence endorsements in NCEA are presented with certificates and badges. Students and parents are able to track NCEA progress any time any place via our Kamar portal, connected to the college website. 3 FACILITIES Upper Hutt College is a decile 6, state co-educational school, situated in Trentham, Upper Hutt. The roll in 2018 is approximately 1,000. The college is set in 9 hectares of grounds, encompassing rugby, cricket and football fields, an astroturf as well as netball and basketball courts. The facilities at Upper Hutt College include: • Creative Arts Centre, incorporating a Music room and practice suites, a Media Studies room with high end computers, two Art teaching rooms, a senior Art room and a Photography suite, a Drama room and a Dance studio, complete with a sprung floor • Student cafeteria and a barista shop • Modern Administration Block, housing 8 state-of-the-art classrooms, a Deans Centre, student and visitor reception areas, administration offices and staffroom • Sports Centre incorporating 2 gyms and a weights room • Astroturf courts for all weather sports and hard courts for netball, basketball and volleyball • Library with a comprehensive range of books and student access to computers and the internet • Refurbished Science classrooms including specialist Science laboratories • 5 specialist computer classrooms supplemented by computer pods, classroom computers and sets of chromebooks • Specialist technology rooms for Graphics, Wood, Metal, Digital, Food and Textiles Technology • Awhina Resource Unit for students with special learning needs Upper Hutt College’s population reflects New Zealand’s society. The school has an International programme that welcomes students from Asia, South America and Europe to learn in a New Zealand school.     Changes to some school services Effective from 28 January 2013, there are changes to some school bus services operated by Runcimans. These changes include discontinuing some school services, variations to some services and the introduction of some new services. Please note that any school bus services to and from Riverstone Terraces, or Lower Hutt suburbs to Lower Hutt Schools operated by Valley Flyer are not affected by these changes. Fares and Using Snapper on public bus routes Some of the changes detailed below require the use of public bus routes as an alternative to discontinued school bus services. The Runcimans term passes cannot be used on public bus routes, they can only be used on dedicated school buses operated by Runcimans. Credit can be loaded onto your Snapper card which can be used to transfer between Runcimans school routes and public bus routes at no additional cost, but you need to make sure that you tag on and tag off of each bus otherwise you will pay more than you need to. Transfer options are not available for the train, although monthly passes at significant discounts are available. Planning your journey We have made some suggestions below as to which particular timetabled public bus services and transfers between them may best suit your travel needs. You should however plan your journey at www.metlink.org.nz, in case there are other options more suited to you.     1 Neal Swindells Practical & Principled Independent Educational Consultant Email: [email protected] 1 July 2021 Report to the Ministry of Education on the Community Consultation Regarding Proposed Changes to the Heretaunga College Enrolment Scheme: May - June 2021 Summary Following a meeting with Shelley Govier, Lead Adviser Network, and Jeena Baines, Network Analyst, at the Ministry of Education Wellington Regional Office and meeting with the Principal of Heretaunga College, Fiona Craven, I launched the consultation on the proposed changes to the Enrolment Scheme for Heretaunga College on May 24th, 2021. The consultation took the form of a letter emailed to both the Presiding Chairs and Principals of 16 state and state integrated schools in the Upper Hutt area. These schools included the two state secondary schools; Heretaunga College and Upper Hutt College; the two Intermediate Schools, Maidstone Intermediate and Fergusson Intermediate; and all the state primaries as well as the two Catholic State Integrated primary schools in the area. The letter had links to the proposed changes to the Enrolment Scheme and maps showing the proposed changes. I then offered Heretaunga College, Upper Hutt College, the two Intermediate schools and St Joseph’s School a short communique designed to be sent to parents / whanau and asked them to send these out to their community to try to ensure all Year 8 parents in the district were aware of the proposed changes and the consultation process. I had a number of conversations with the acting Principal at Maidstone Intermediate whose pupils were likely to be the most directly affected group. Both Maidstone Intermediate and Heretaunga College published the proposed changes to their whole community.
