Since the mid 70s this cliff has been increasingly referred to as the East Cliff and consequently the South Cliff is often miscalled the West Cliff (ref. OS sheet 175, 1:50 000 First series, 1974). No wonder that Eastcliffrichard questions our sense of geography. It is obvious to all in Thanet, excepting Bradstonians and DFLs, that the cliff to the north of Broadstairs jetty should be called the North Cliff and the cliff to the south of the jetty be called the South Cliff. And obviously my rant could also extend to the misnaming of our esplanades. I would like to propose that this geographical confusion be corrected ASAP and certainly before Eastcliffrichard tackles the problem of Northwood being south of Westwood. Perhaps it's the case that all in Thanet suffer from dysorientia. Accounting for the Fund The Companies Act 1985 does not apply to all public bodies but the principles that underlie the Act’s accounting and disclosure requirements are of general application: their purpose is to give a true and fair view of the state of affairs of the body concerned. The Government therefore has decided that the accounts of public bodies should be prepared in a way that conforms as closely as possible with the Act’s requirements and also complies with Accounting Standards where applicable. The accounts are prepared in accordance with accounts directions issued by the Secretary of State for Transport. The Fund’s accounts consolidate the General Lighthouse Authorities’ (GLAs) accounts and comply as appropriate with this policy.     Atlas Sgoile Oxford At an early stage in the atlas project we met with the ‘An Seotal’ panel to agree principles which would guide the translation work. Below are the principles we followed in seeking to achieve consistency throughout the atlas. 1. Fundamental principle We will not change names unless they have a recognised Gaelic form, or unless they can be rendered in natural Gaelic. 2. Lenition Where it would be natural to do so, we will insert an h in English names – Bàgh Bhengal Mòr-bhaile Mhanchester Rubha Shumburgh 3. The Article We will use the article in names of oceans etc on maps. An Cuan a Tuath Am Pòla a Tuath An Crios-meadhain An Rìoghachd Aonaichte Am Muir Ruadh Na Seychelles etc Where the article is part of the name, we will use the Gaelic article. An Wash Na Fens etc 4. And Windsor and Maidenhead – such will be rendered Windsor agus Maidenhead 5. Countries of the World Names of countries will be as on Map-balla Stòrlann, except where the panel of ‘An Seotal’ recommended a change for consistency or improvement of the Map-balla form; therefore, as they will appear on ‘An Seotal’. The States of America We will deal with them as countries, as above, therefore states will be as they will appear on ‘An Seotal’. Atlas Sgoile Oxford 6.
