By Jermaine Bacon Franc Mag— Issue 2 Web site: www.francmag.co.uk Page 3 Fantasy football tips! Calling all school fantasy football players! It’s time to create your own fantasy team, the deadline is close. Who will you pick I hear you say? Well look no further and read up on some of the top tips from ‘Franc Mag’ to race you up that fantasy league! We are helping you to find the best new players around so here are my top tips:- Gareth Bale - He wanted to join Manchester United but settled for Tottenham Hotspur and, to the fantasy manager, this should make Bale a more attractive proposition. Quite possibly the attacking left back signed from Southampton could be the most profitable in his position outside of those playing for the Big Four. Steven Reid - Wait, don’t laugh. Yes, Steven Reid, the water carrier with the weakened knee, the converted defender is at the centre of one of the Premiership’s most workmanlike midfields and the player who makes Robbie Savage looks creative. Yes, Reid could strengthen your fantasy squad with his gritty edge. Eduardo da Silva - The speed with which Arsene Wenger acted spoke volumes. A fortnight after Thierry Henry had bid au revoir to Arsenal, their manager, usually among the most cautious in the transfer market, had reportedly spent almost eight million on him. Martin Petrov - In Bulgaria he is more revered than Dimitar Berbatov and won the 2006 Bulgarian footballer of the year just as his countryman at Spurs had begun to pull apart the best Premiership defences. Fernando Torres - is a Spanish footballer who joined Liverpool from AthleticoMadrid for £26.5 million fee. During his time in Spain, Torres scored 55 goals over 5 seasons. He is known as 'El Nino'(The Kid). This 'baby-faced' assassin has a huge weight of expectation on his shoulders, but has already proved that he can get goals in the Premiership by opening his account against Chelsea. He currently keeps Peter Crouch out of Liverpool's starting eleven. So take our advice and enter some of the new blood into your team, who knows it might get you some valuable points! Good luck with your fantasy team! By Narthejan Amuthalingam Franc Mag— Issue 2 Web site: www.francmag.co.uk Page 4 Have you ever wanted to find out something interesting or get something fun into ‘Franc Mag’? Well now you can, my simple minded friends! Make statements, ask questions, send in embarrassing pictures, or make up a fun story! The fun just doesn’t stop in junk mail corner! The best letter or email each issue will get a star prize! Just don’t humiliate yourselves ok have some form of respect, he, he! So who am I, I hear you ask, well don’t bother. I hide in the shadows I am an international man of mystery! Email the ‘Junk mail dude’ if you dare at [email protected] From The Junk Mail Dude! PS: I will try to print all letters sent in depending on magazine space. I will endeavour to give you the best answer I can. Ok well most of the time, scouts honour boss! Problem: There is a boy at my school who I really like but the problem is that he is a bit of a nerd! He has asked me out and I have not yet answered. I wanted to say yes but I think my friends will hate me forever and call me names! I am quite popular at school so my reputation is on the line here! What should I do? Advice: I think you should ignore your friends and do what your heart says. If your heart chooses him, and you lose some friends then I would not worry too much as these friends sound very shallow. However you could try changing the boy’s style and look to something a bit “cooler”! Then that way you get your love and keep your popu- larity! However don’t push him too much or he will think you can’t accept him the way he is! Problem: I’m 16 and I need some serious help! I am in love with my best friend’s old girlfriend. She broke up with my friend after she realised that she did not like him anymore! He was really upset about it and I think he might still like her. I asked her to the school prom but I am too scared too tell my friend. Advice: Don’t worry about your friend if he is your true friend he will accept your love for her. You must find out first if she likes you before you sabotage your friendship! Otherwise I suggest you go to the prom with her as friends! By: Aishah Khan Franc Mag— Issue 2 Web site: www.francmag.co.uk Page 5 I am 11 and I have lots of spots and some boys tease me about it. It is so annoying! Please can u tell me how to get rid of them! Spots are just one of those things that come along with growing up. If you keep your eyes open, you'll see that lots of people have them to one degree or another. You may be able to reduce them by talking to a pharmacist or doctor for advice if they are especially bad. I doubt the spots would bother you as much if it weren't for the teasing. Remember there's a lot more to you than a few spots and it’s the inside that counts the most. You might be able to deal with this situation if you tell a teacher or parent.

He felt dismayed at the prospects of inviting international players after the country’s track record of security and terrorism. Feeling nostalgic about the cricket in Pakistan, Sethi went through the PCB’s documents and shockingly discovered that PCB is generating no revenue like it used to do until 2009. He was well aware of the fact cricket is the sport that is Pakistan’s blood, and every nook and cranny is yearning for live cricket in Pakistan—comparing it with other countries like India, where IPL generates staggering revenues and proved the bordering country with amazement and thrill every year. Indians remain excited that the IPL will continue every year and they will witness the spectacle of deadly yorkers and loft sixes very soon. Sethi feels every other cricket- loving nation have their own leagues like County Cricket, Big Bash League, Sri Lankan Premier League, Caribbean Premier League, etc.

  • 2010 Commonwealth Games Bronze Medalist Haroon Khan Continues Professional Jounrey Against Stefan Slavchev in Blackpool
2010 COMMONWEALTH GAMES BRONZE MEDALIST HAROON KHAN CONTINUES PROFESSIONAL JOUNREY AGAINST STEFAN SLAVCHEV IN BLACKPOOL BOLTON (Oct 31) – Hot prospect Haroon Khan (2-0, 1 KO) will step back into the ring in Blackpool on Friday November 15th against 20-year-old Bulgarian, Stefan Slavchev (3-8, 1 KO), as he continues his march towards the top. The 2010 Commonwealth Games bronze medalist has made a blazing start to his professional career after making the leap into the paid ranks earlier this year, scoring a win over the tricky Brett Fidoe before knocking out Vincente Medellin in a sensational performance in Atlantic City. As the younger brother of former unified world champion, Amir Khan, the talented super-flyweight possesses much of the same skill set, including his quick hands and thrilling combinations. He now goes into battle in his third fight against a well schooled opponent in Slavchev, at Blackpool’s Winter Gardens, leading the lineup in a stacked card that features no less than fourteen exciting bouts. ”I’m very pleased that my opponent has now be confirmed,” said Haroon. “Now I can start working on some specific things with my trainer Oliver Harrison in order to prepare for him. I know Stefan will be coming to get the win so I’ll need to be at my sharpest and make sure I’m ready. Training has gone great and I can see the improvements I’m making all the time in the gym. I can’t wait for November 15th because I’m ready to put on a great performance.” Tickets for Haroon’s clash, which also features a jam-packed card put together by VIP Boxing Promotions, start at just £30 or £60 ringside.

  • Un/Making the British Asian Male Athlete: Race, Legibility and the State
Un/making the British Asian male athlete: race, legibility and the state Abstract This article explores the social construction of the British Asian male sport star. It foregrounds an analysis of the racial state, primarily its biopolitical function in (re)affirming racialised models of citizenship and contemporary hierarchies of belonging. Drawing on conceptualisations of legibility, the article argues that this relationship between race and the state is necessary to understand the processes by which such athletes are made intelligible in the popular imagination. Empirically, the article focuses on the articulations, experiences and performativity of British Asian Muslim international cricketer, Moeen Ali, during the summer of 2014. It suggests that these examples reflect the contestation and de/legitimisation of various forms of social, cultural and political attachment and embodiment within the public sphere. The article argues that the extent to which athletes such as Ali are made il/legible in sport is linked inextricably to the way in which British Asians and British Muslims are made il/legible in society. Finally, the article considers the spaces, contexts and discourses within which British Asian athletes can(not) represent themselves; and the dominant forms of being, speaking and thinking with which they must conform to meet the requirements of elite sporting citizenship. Key words British Asians; British Muslims; Legibility; Race; Sport; State 1 “Here to stay, here to play”: Moeen Ali, governmentalities of nation and the contested politics of (sporting) citizenship1 “You’re playing for England, Moeen Ali, not your religion” – Michael Henderson, The Telegraph, June 2014. “I am a Muslim, yes, but I am also very English.

Amir Khan Adapted from http://worldcelebsbiography.blogspot.com/2011/04/world‐light‐welterweight‐boxing.html Name _________________ Date __________ Amir Khan was born in Bolton in early December 1986. He showed early promise as a boxer, and in 2003 he won a gold medal at the AAU Junior Olympic Games, closely followed by another gold medal at the European Student Championship in 2004. This early interest was encouraged by his father Shah Khan, who considered his son a born fighter and was confident that his son could be very successful at his chosen sport. At the 2004 Athens Olympics, Khan won a silver medal at the age of 17. Khan won the WBA World Light-Welterweight World Championship title, defeating Andreas Kotelnik in a unanimous decision over 12 rounds in July 2009. He is also the former Commonwealth lightweight champion, WBO Inter-Continental lightweight champion, and WBA International lightweight champion. Background Khan spent his early years supporting his local soccer team, Bolton Wanderers whilst attending Smithills school. This early support has since been repaid by the club who have allowed Khan to use their training facilities. Amir's parents hail from the Punjab province of Pakistan, Rawalpindi and as a result he can speak Urdu and Panjabi in addition to his native English. He has a younger brother Haroon Khan who is also an amateur boxer; and his first cousin, Sajid Mahmood is an English cricketer. Amateur The early amateur career of Khan was distinguished and at the age of 17 he won an Olympic Silver Medal from the 2004 Olympic Games in Athens.
