Summary of Novel ix Universitas Sumatera Utara CHAPTER I 1.INTRODUCTION 1.1 Background of Study Literature is the playing form of composer‟s words which contains of certain purpose that will be informed for literature lovers. Basically, literature comes from Latin word, “littera” which means the letter or handwriting, it was used to refer to all written or printed words. Literature can be seen as a creation of human activities that live in social life with all problems. Literary works have function to entertain or teach some things for readers. The function of this literature can be found in any kind of literary works. Authors appreciate the problem and then put it into a work of literary fiction. As the work of literature has function to entertain, it can also be a movie. Literature has been classified into novel, fiction, poetry, drama, and nonfiction prose. From the above classification, the writer decided to discuss the fiction in a novel. A novel usually tells about human life which interact with the environment and each other. In a novel, the author makes every effort to direct with the reader to images of the reality of life through the stories contained in the novel. Novel rises something which describe the human life, it becomes as something that people may understand with the same principle in daily life, such as psychological truth, history, a consciousness of moral values and many more. This research is about the main characters in a novel. Character is an important factor that drives the novel's plot. The more complex a character, the more intricate the plot of the story. Because of this reason sometimes most readers just read the novel, enjoyed and completed without any value can be obtained. Thi22s can causea messages or moral values who want to be conveyed by the author can‟t be absorbed by the reader. 1 Universitas Sumatera Utara Nurgiyantoro (2002: 11) states that reading a novel, for most (large) people just want to enjoy the story presented. 5.0-6.0 The Lost Gate Card, Orson Scott 5.8 Danny North knew from early childhood that his family was different, and that he was different from them. While his cousins were learning how to create the things that commoners called fairies, ghosts, golems, trolls, werewolves, and other such miracles that were the heritage of the North family, Danny worried that he would never show a talent, never form an outself. He grew up in the rambling old house, filled with dozens of cousins, and aunts and uncles, all ruled by his father. Their home was isolated in the mountains of western Virginia, far from town, far from schools, far from other people. There are many secrets in the House, and many rules that Danny must follow. There is a secret library with only a few dozen books, and none of them in English — but Danny and his cousins are expected to become fluent in the language of the books. While Danny's cousins are free to create magic whenever they like, they must never do it where outsiders might see. Unfortunately, there are some secrets kept from Danny as well. And that will lead to disaster for the North family. The Gate Thief Card, Orson Scott 5.3 In this sequel to The Lost Gate, bestselling author Orson Scott Card continues his fantastic tale of the Mages of Westil who live in exile on Earth in The Gate Thief, a novel of the Mither Mages. Here on Earth, Danny North is still in high school, yet he holds in his heart and mind all the stolen outselves of thirteen centuries of gatemages.

  • WRA SUMMER READING PROGRAM 2018 Western Reserve Academy Leisure Summer Reading 2018
WRA SUMMER READING PROGRAM 2018 Western Reserve Academy Leisure Summer Reading 2018 Most members of the Reserve community find pleasure in reading. For those of us tied to the academic calendar, summers and holidays give us what we need most—time. With that in mind, we offer students this list of recommended books for summer reading. This list is intended for student LEISURE reading. We hope the variety piques student interest and provides the opportunity to expand horizons, satisfy curiosity, and/or offer an enjoyable escape. Titles include: “classics” to recently published titles, relatively easy to challenging reading levels, and a variety of genres covering diverse subjects. Also included is a list of recommended websites to locate further suggestions for award-winning books and titles of interest. This list is updated annually by members of the John D. Ong library staff. Titles are recommended by members of the WRA community or by respected review sources including the Young Adult Library Services Association (YALSA), a division of the American Library Association. A few titles have frank passages that mirror some aspects of life explicitly. Therefore, we urge parents to explore the titles your teenagers choose and discuss the book as well as the choice with them. All the books on this list should be available in libraries and/or bookstores. The Ong Library will also arrange for a special “summer checkout” for anyone interested. Just ask at the library front desk. Enjoy your summer and your free time, and try to spend some of it reading! Your feedback about any title on this list is welcome—and we also welcome your recommendations for titles to add in the future.

  • June 2018 Dear Families, Reading for Enjoyment During The
June 2018 Dear Families, Reading for enjoyment during the summer is one of life’s little pleasures for most of us. Our wish for your children is that they too, look forward to reading those books that they just didn’t have time for this past school year. We hope to instill in our students a lifelong reading habit of stacking their nightstands and suitcases (or camp packs) and e-readers with books they want to read. When preparing our summer reading lists, our primary goal was to include titles that middle school readers would want to read over the summer. On each of the lists, you will find suggested titles, genres, and authors. All students entering sixth, seventh and eighth grades are expected to read at least three books during the summer. However, there is no expectation that they write a response to what they have read. This will be an assignment they will have when they return to school in September. We do recommend that students use post-it notes or jot down notes in a response notebook as a way to record their thinking about what they have read. The reading levels of the books on these lists may vary quite a bit because our readers also vary. If you feel that a book is not at an appropriate level for your child, please help them choose something else. You may want to choose to read the same books your child reads so that you will be able to have conversations about them throughout the summer. We are hoping that some students will choose to pair-up with friends and read the same book so that they can discuss them together.
