PITTSBURGH PIRATES February PITTSBURGH PIRATES vs. PITTSBURGH PIRATES February 29, 2016 - McKechnie Field in Bradenton, FL TODAY: The Pirates are playing their annual Black and Gold intrasquad game...Proceeds from the $8 General Admission charge will benefit the Manatee Public School Foundation as well as Wakeland Elementary School and GD Rogers Garden Elementary. ON THE MOUND: Pitching for Team Black today will be Jameson Taillon, Steven Brault and Chad Kuhl (each expected to pitch 2.0 innings)...On the mound for Team Gold will be Tyler Glasnow (2.0ip), John Holdzkom (1.0ip) and Trevor Williams (2.0ip). TOMORROW: The Pirates are scheduled to play their first official spring training game - a 1:05 affair against the Tigers in Lakeland...Kyle Lobstein is expected to start for the Bucs against Detroit’s Matt Boyd (LH)....Wilfredo Boscan, Neftali Feliz, Curtis Partch, Rob Scahill and Trey Haley are also scheduled to pitch for the Pirates. THE ROSTER: There are 61 active players in Major League camp (30 pitchers, 6 catchers, 17 infielders and 8 outfielders)...RHP Nick Kingham and LHP Jesse Biddle had Tommy John surgery last year and both are expected to miss spring training action. GUIDING THE SHIP: Clint Hurdle is in his sixth season as Manager of the Pirates...He has won 431 games in his first five seasons and will enter the 2016 campaign sixth among active managers in all-time wins (965)...Hurdle ranks seventh among Pittsburgh managers with his 431 victories, 26 behind Pie Traynor...In addition, Hurdle is just thre third manager in the franchise’s 129-year history to take his team to the postseason three consecutive years (also Fred Clarke from 1901-1903 and Jim Leyland from 1990-1992). ON THE TUBE: Root Sports Pittsburgh is scheduled to televise 12 of the 16 games played at McKechnie Field this spring...The first broadcast will take place this Friday as the Pirates play host to the Twins. NEW KID ON THE BLOCK: Joe Block was hired as a play-by-play announcer on January 30, replacing Tim Neverett, who left the Pirates for a similar role with the Red Sox in Boston...Block spent the last four years in a play-by-play role with the Brewers after spending the 2011 season hosting the Los Angeles Dodgers radio post-game show on KABC in Los Angeles...Block joins Greg Brown, Steve Blass, Bob Walk and John Wehner on the Pirates broadcast team. FAN-TASTIC: The Pirates finished the 2015 spring season with a club record attendance of 106,038, breaking the previous mark of 93,433 set in 2013...The Bucs also set a single-game attendance record with 9,018 fans at the 3/18 contest against the Tigers. Why Adjustments Are Needed King Arthur’s quest for it in the Middle Ages became a large part of his legend. Monty Python and Indiana Jones launched their searches in popular 1974 and 1989 movies. The mythic quest for the Holy Grail, the name given in Western tradition to the chal- ice used by Jesus Christ at his Passover meal the night before his death, is now often a metaphor for a quintessential search. In the illustrious history of baseball, the “holy grail” is a ranking of each player’s overall value on the baseball diamond. Because player skills are multifaceted, it is not clear that such a ranking is possible. In comparing two players, you see that one hits home runs much better, whereas the other gets on base more often, is faster on the base paths, and is a better fielder. So which player should rank higher? In Baseball’s All-Time Best Hitters, I identified which players were best at getting a hit in a given at-bat, calling them the best hitters. Many reviewers either disapproved of or failed to note my definition of “best hitter.” Although frequently used in base- ball writings, the terms “good hitter” or best hitter are rarely defined. In a July 1997 Sports Illustrated article, Tom Verducci called Tony Gwynn “the best hitter since Ted Williams” while considering only batting average.

A lot of athletes do wonderful things – but they don't die doing it," says former teammate Steve Blass about Roberto Clemente on ESPN Classic's SportsCentury series. Playing in an era dominated by the likes of Willie Mays, Mickey Mantle and Hank Aaron, Roberto Clemente was usually overlooked by fans when they discussed great players. Not until late in his 18- year career did the public appreciate the many talents of the 12-time All-Star of the Pittsburgh Pirates. Of all Clemente's skills, his best tool was his right arm. From rightfield, he unleashed lasers. He set a record by leading the National League in assists five seasons. He probably would have led even more times, but players learned it wasn't wise to run on Clemente. Combined with his arm, his ability to track down fly balls earned him Gold Gloves the last 12 years of his career. At bat, Clemente seemed uncomfortable, rolling his neck and stretching his back. But it was the pitchers who felt the pain. Standing deep in the box, the right-handed hitter would drive the ball to all fields. After batting above .300 just once in his first five seasons, Clemente came into his own as a hitter. Starting in 1960, he batted above .311 in 12 of his final 13 seasons, and won four batting titles in a seven-year period. Clemente's legacy lives on -- look no farther than the number on Sammy Sosa's back.
