In the appendix and in the list of works cited I have included the city of publication for the Young Adult novels, if available, as these details are important for historical reasons. vii ABSTRACT Representations of home and homeland in twentieth-century Australian Young Adult novels are regularly associated with violence towards people and place. I have worked with the Nolan Historical Children’s Literature Research Collection to undertake close readings of seventy-eight Australian novels published between 1896 and 1968. In the method articulated by Literary Discourse Theory, I have examined paraliterature such as Australian literature, films, Acts of Parliament, and environmental texts to contextualise and elaborate the notions of home, homeland and violence which appear in these novels. The novels represent the Australian home as a place that is populated almost exclusively by British people, as a place in which eating together is highly valued and which is surrounded with English-style gardens. The novels actively devalue landscape features that pre-date white settlement and they portray sheep and cattle as the primary, critical inhabitants of the Australian homeland, ignoring the impact that these animals have on the environment. Australian young women in particular are personified as under threat by Chinese, Japanese and German peoples, who are construed in a variety of derogatory ways. Aboriginal characters are presented in one of two ways: as station workers, trackers or native police who “help” settlers, or as “wild” and threatening. Aboriginal women are described in extremely offensive terms and are sexualised. The novels do not generally recognise Aboriginal languages. I examine the depictions of people and place in the context of discourses of colonial settlement and Lorenzo Veracini’s model of the tripartite social structure of settler colonial societies. I find that this model is reproduced in the novels, as settlers, immigrants and Aboriginal peoples are segregated. Drawing on theories of violence developed by Walter Benjamin, Hannah Arendt, Giorgio Agamben and others enables an analysis that differs from previous studies of viii Young Adult novels that have examined themes of racism, the environment or colonialism as individual subjects, which presume the presence of violence but which do not examine it. Several types of violence are identified by this study: written violence on the page; the book as a vehicle of violence; depictions of fictional or historic violence; hate-speech; structural violence of binary classificatory systems implicit in the novels; the ‘violences’ of various moral, environmental, scientific, political, racial, social and anthropological discourses, in which some of the novels participate and citational violence, in which the novels refer to historical discourses. I find that Walter Benjamin’s theory of mythic violence and its connection with law provides a productive framework with which to theorise the function of violence in the novels. Each of the different types of violence that appears in these novels is related to written or unwritten laws about the home and homeland and serves to promote or maintain those laws, as Benjamin theorised. ix INTRODUCTION This thesis is about the expression of violence. It is also about depictions of home and homeland. These two themes are examined in a selection of twentieth-century Australian Young Adult novels. Children’s and Young Adult literature can often tell us more about a culture, its values and ethics than many other literary genres because it functions both as a medium that transmits ideas to the next generation and as

Maurice was the first National President of the Children’s Book Council of Australia and has served on judging panels for children’s literature many times in Australia; and he is the only Australian to have been selected as a juror for the prestigious international Hans Andersen Awards. He has received the Dromkeen Medal, the Lady Cutler Award and an Order of Australia for his services to children’s literature. The strategic direction of the organisation is through a Volunteer Board with operational matters delivered by the museum’s manager/curator, weekend casuals and volunteer guides, gardeners and tea shop and gift shop staff. Each financial year Nutcote completes a Joint Strategic Plan review and provides Council their annual report. Over the past four years (pre-COVID-19) the average number of visitors to Nutcote annually has been 7,000. Before COVID-19, Nutcote staff had developed an education program which encouraged special interest groups to visit Nutcote. These included garden talks for garden groups and architecture talks for architecture students as well as coffee mornings. These offerings proved very successful. With the arrival of COVID-19, many bookings had to be cancelled and deposits refunded. During COVID-19 Nutcote staff developed an online shop and worked on ways to continue to engage people via social media. Nutcote was able to reopen in early June.

    Write and Wrong: methods and practice of First Nations Australian representation in young adult fiction Thesis submitted for the Doctor of Philosophy in Communication degree of the University of Canberra Author: Sophie-Anne Edwina Stanton 31st January 2020 i Abstract Representations of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander (Indigenous) peoples by non- Indigenous writers in young adult fiction is a complex area of study made contentious by political and social tensions stemming from Australia’s colonial history. Representations can have harmful real-world effects (Lucashenko, 2009) rooted not only in their consumption but also in the methods of production. When writing about Indigenous Australian peoples, non-indigenous authors are faced with negotiating these tensions. This thesis documents and compares information about the writing practices and reflections of non-Indigenous authors in regard to their critically lauded works that contain representations of Indigenous peoples. In doing so, it indicates moments of tension, success, and possible pathways towards deeper intercultural understanding. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with ten writers, all of whom published young adult novels shortlisted by the Children’s Book Council of Australia between 2002 and 2016, in order to explore their experiences of writing across cultures. Their novels were analysed with reference to postcolonial theories and Indigenous criticisms of representation in writing. The writers’ responses to the interview questions were coded and analysed according to established social research methods to establish individuals’ motivations and methods, and examine their reflections on writing about Indigenous peoples. Discussion of the similarities and differences between the participants’ responses revealed three main themes relating to the research aims.

    5 Den of Nargun, Mitchell River National Park by Sharnee Sergi and Ian D. Clark This chapter is concerned to document the history of the development of the Den of Nargun as a tourism site utilising the theoretical constructs developed by MacCan- nell (1976), Butler (1980) and Gunn (1994). These perspectives provide insights into the historical maturation of a cultural or natural site into a tourism attraction. Mac- Cannell’s (1976) perspective reflects progressive development of attractions over five phases – naming, framing and elevation, enshrinement and duplication, and social reproduction. For the purpose of this study, Butler’s (1980) ‘tourism area life cycle model’ will be correlated with MacCannell’s model of the evolution of attractions in order to navigate the development and tourism history of the Den of Nargun. Further- more, utilisation of Gunn’s (1994) spatial model helps to provide an understanding of the contextual and environmental development and character of the site. The Den of Nargun is an important geological and Aboriginal cultural site located in the Mitchell River National Park in East Gippsland and is situated approximately 50km northwest of Bairnsdale, Victoria. The evolution of the Den of Nargun as a tourism attraction is contextualised with the Mitchell River National Park’s own history and will be, in part, explored in this study. The Mitchell River National Park and the Den of Nargun, as it is known today, was formally known as the Glenaladale National Park (Catrice, 1996). References to the Den of Nargun are commonly cited in older works as being a part of the Glenaladale National Park.

Nutcote Annual Report and Audited Statements 2016-17 SUBJECT: May Gibbs’ Nutcote Joint Plan of Management 2017-19 and new Constitution AUTHOR: Martin Ellis, Director, Community and Library Services ENDORSED BY: Adrian Panuccio, A/General Manager EXECUTIVE SUMMARY: Council’s policy for aligning the activities of its community facilities with Council’s overall purposes is for the development of Joint Plans of Management (JPoMs). Following public exhibition of its Strategic Plan 2017-19 in September 2017, the Nutcote Trust Board has provided the plan to Council now to be included in the JPoM. Concurrently with this, Council has been guiding the Board in updating the Nutcote Trust Pty Ltd’s 1990 Constitution. The Constitution of Nutcote Trust Pty Ltd (ACN 003 963 148) was approved by the shareholders at the Annual General Meeting on 24 October 2017. FINANCIAL IMPLICATIONS: Nil RECOMMENDATION: 1. THAT the draft May Gibbs’ Nutcote Plan of Management 2017-2019 be placed on Public Exhibition for 28 days. 2. THAT should Council receive substantive submissions a further report be prepared. Should Council receive no substantive submissions it considers the May Gibbs’ Nutcote Plan of Management 2017-2019 as adopted after the period closes. 3. THAT Council notes the Constitution of Nutcote Trust Pty Ltd (ACN 003 963 148) is in force. 4. THAT Council resolves to have the A/General Manager’s share in Nutcote Trust Pty Ltd (ACN 003 963 148) be transferred to North Sydney Council.

Following a deficit in 2014 the Centre posted another deficit for the 18 months (Jan 2015- June 2016) of $15,781. This was not an operational deficit as depreciation was $14,581, and is in line with previous years. FINANCIAL IMPLICATIONS: Nil. Local Government Act 1993: Section 23A Guidelines - Council Decision Making During Merger Proposal Period. The Guidelines have been considered in the preparation of this report and are not applicable. RECOMMENDATION: 1. THAT the report on May Gibbs’ Nutcote be received. 2.
