Welcome to the Swiss Mountaineering School grindelwaldSPORTS. Join us on the glacier hike: UNESCO hut to hut trekking The programme: Day 1 Journey to the Jungfraujoch and descent to the Konkordia hut 2850m We meet our mountain guide at the Jungfraujoch and have a look at all the attractions. From the viewing terrace we take a look at the first stage of our journey. The Aletsch glacier lies majestically to our feet and beckons us to come and hike on it. We start hiking on snow, it’s all downhill to the Konkordiaplatz. A short break on the huge glacier allows us to marvel the surrounding panorama and if you didn’t already know: we will be sitting on Europe’s thickest ice; 900m in depth. A flight of stairs will eventually lead us off the glacier and up to the Konkordia hut. Day 2 Over the Grünhornlücke 3280m and on to the Finsteraarhorn hut 3048m After a hearty breakfast we return to the stairways that take us back down to the glacier. 4 glaciers converge together at the Konkordiaplatz and join up with the Aletsch glacier. Along the Grüneggfirn to the East we ascend up to the Grünhornlücke. The Finsteraarhorn 4274m, the highest peak in the Bernese Alps, proudly dominates the horizon. In the far distance we can distinguish the Finsteraarhorn hut but there is yet the Fiescher glacier to cross before we can enjoy a cold drink on the hut’s sunny terrace. Day 3 Hiking up the Galmigletscher to the Oberaarjoch hut 3256m The day starts easy with as we descend down to the „Rotloch“. This isn’t a hole, as the name may well indicate, but the point where the Fiescher- and Galmi glaciers A a flight of stairs take us up to our accommodation, the Oberaarjoch hut, situated in a stunning position. Here we will watch the sunset and enjoy the rest of the evening. Depending on group size, conditions and timing, the guide will decide if we start the hike to the summit of the Oberaarhorn already in the afternoon. For safety reasons the group might also get split up, some head to the summit, the others enjoy the afternoon at the hut. Day 4 The climax of the week: the Oberaarhorn 3631m The second group rises early to make the 1.5 hour ascent to the Oberaarhorn. The panorama from this isolated peak couldn’t be better; around us are no less than 24 4000m peaks! This part of the trip isn’t compulsory and those who wish can sleep in at the hut. Back at the hut we pack our all our belongings and set off over the Oberaargletscher, then along the Oberaar lake and finally to the Oberaar guest house. A taxi will pick us up and take us to Meiringen. The tour ends at the train station in Meiringen. We say goodbye and - tired but happy - continue on our journey home. What you need to know...
