October 4, 2016 was a very exciting day for us! It was the day tasty snacks and lovely decorations, we had the most wonderful were all in attendance! We even had some special friends from we re-opened our location at the newly renovated Children’s party guests! Vice President Operations It’s that time of the year again. We’ve gotten through the holidays and are starting a fresh new year, and typically we look forward to it with optimism. We Jane Fried make our New Year’s resolutions and start out keeping them. Some of those resolutions we manage to keep, and some we don’t. Nevertheless, the new Treasurer/V.P. Finance year ritual of renewal and commitment is important to us as individuals even if we don’t keep some (or even any) of our resolutions. Simon Thompson

Vice President Development I believe the same ritual is good for institutions, such as the Ronald McDonald House. It’s important to take a look back and see what went well and what Augie Estrada did not, and then make our plan for the new year. That is what is currently happening at the Ronald McDonald House Charities of San Antonio (RMHCSA). Secretary Clarissa Rodriguez In most regards, last year was a good year for us. We completed the renovation and expansion of the Ronald McDonald House located within the Children’s COUNCIL OF PRESIDENTS Hospital of San Antonio (CHOSA). After an almost two-year period, we opened our house on November 3, 2016 to the children (and their families) Bess Malone undergoing treatment at CHOSA. Not only is it a beautiful new house, it is very welcoming and comforting. The presence of the House within CHOSA is Ted D. Lee Paul Olivier very important to the children and families, particularly for parents who have children in the neonatal and pediatric intensive care units. Like our other two Sharon Smith houses near San Antonio hospitals, the CHOSA House is a great example of fulfilling our mission – providing a home away from home for sick children Dorothy Wise and their families, the vast majority of whom would not be able to afford any other place to stay. The funds for the renovation of the new CHOSA House Bob Rios Petey Hale were raised in a capital campaign that began in 2013. Roddy Baker Emilie Rogers Allen Cazier But we are not done with our capital campaign. There is a tremendous need for an additional house at the Medical Center in San Antonio. The pediatric Sandi Kolitz expansions at Methodist Hospital and University Hospital, and other facilities, are drawing pediatric patients to San Antonio from all over South Texas. Our Beth Plummer current house in the Medical Center is full almost 100% of the time – we are turning away children and their families. Dale Peterson Leslie Foley George McClure We have the land on which to build a new house in the Medical Center and we are raising funds to build the new house. Resolve to make the difference. Gordon Brown Larry Roberts Plan to donate to the Capital Campaign to build a 4th Ronald McDonald House. If you are a regular donor, we appreciate your continued support, but Danielle Marasco challenge you to give more. If you overlooked your contribution-there’s no time like the present! With your additional funding, we will be steps closer to Carlos Rodriguez turning our dream of building a 4th house into a reality. The Ronald McDonald House Charities of San Antonio, Texas, Inc., has been chosen as “Charity of the Eve- ning” for an event at The Tobin Center for the Arts on Friday, September 30, 2017. We will be partnering with DAVID VICTOR PRESENTS for a show called ROCK STARS & STRIPES: The American Rock Experience. We hope all of you will save the date and join us for this fundraising event.

ROCK STARS & STRIPES is a live theatrical rock concert featuring the greatest American rock music of all time, starring former BOSTON vocalist/guitarist DAVID VICTOR. The ROCK STARS & STRIPES show features the greatest hits of The Eagles, BOSTON, Aerosmith, Journey, Lynyrd Skynyrd, ZZ Top, Bruce Springsteen, and many, many more American rock stars with a cinematic rock 'n roll road trip across America (including our own State of Texas). MTV and Emmy Award winner Jeff Clark provides the spectacular road trip visuals of America's musical hotspots and their people.

The ROCK STARS & STRIPES show will hold a live guitar auction during the show where audience members can text a bid for a beautifully-wrapped, autographed ROCK STARS & STRIPES guitar, and 100% of the proceeds will go to our Ronald McDonald House. Staff from our Ronald McDonald House will also be selling souvenir show programs with profits also going to our Charity .

There is also a limited number of VIP packages available which would include a meet 'n greet with the cast members, a show program, and a free merchandise item; just click on the dropdown box for that package.

When we started to put together the Rock Stars & Stripes show, the guiding principle was to elevate the community, its heroes and America. Without the people that keep us free, safe, educated, fed and helped when we need it – we would never have the rock and roll heritage that is a light to the world today. The Rock Stars & Stripes “Local Heroes” segment acknowledges some of those heroes that exist – often in anonymity – in our community. We want to recognize them and thank them for their service and sacrifice. In doing so, we acknowledge that there are many hidden heroes as well and that these honorees represent thousands of others who toil and sacrifice each day to allow us to be free. The heroes that we introduce as part of the Rock Stars & Stripes show represent the best in all of us.

A Local Hero can be police, fire, military, a school teacher, or anyone who has done something meaningful and positive for their community. When you nominate a Local Hero, you give them the honor they deserve and enter them to win tickets to the show!

Needless to say, we jumped at the chance, and boy are we glad! Glenn spent close to a month creating a beautiful, de- tailed snow village that was beyond our wild- est dreams! Using pieces from Department 56 and many of his own creations, we watched him bring the village to life! Ronald McDonald House Charities has been a part of the San Antonio community for the past 31 years. We started as one 10 bedroom house, expanded to a 20 bedroom facility, then added a second 20 bedroom home, and with the addition of our location at then Christus Santa Rosa, were the first city ever to have a RMH inside a hospital. A few years after our location at the hospital was opened, the hospital underwent years of major construction to become Children's Hospital of San Antonio. During the years of renovations, our house was closed. Well, I am very happy to report that we are back and better than ever! We re-opened with a beautiful 16 bedroom home that allows parents of critical patients to be a stone’s throw away from their child’s bedside. But, we are not done growing! We have secured the land and have plans drawn for a 4th RMH, 2 lots from our house in the Med Center area! With all of this growth comes the need for more RMH family members. I am pleased to introduce you to our newest full time staff members.

Kimberly Grill, Social Media Director, "Being a part of this organization has been extremely rewarding!", Born and raised in California, Kimberly is a Texas transplant. She was in the insurance industry for many years and decided it was time for a change. She served on the “Friends of the Ronald McDonald House” board and quickly became very passionate about our mission. When we met her we just knew that she would be perfect as our Social Media Director! Welcome, Kimberly!

Bianca Munoz, Assistant House Manager- C.H.O.S.A. “ The Ronald McDonald House has been very inspirational to me!” Bianca is a San Antonio native. She joined us after working for a law firm. Her experience working closely with many different people and dealing with many different situations makes her the perfect fit for Assistant House Manager at our C.H.O.S.A. House! Welcome, Bianca!

Misti Villarreal, Assistant House Manager- Lewis St. “ My heart has been here since I started volunteering.” Misti is new to working in the San Antonio area. Living in Natalia, she happily makes the 30 minute drive to and from work daily. Starting off as a volunteer, she learned the ins and outs of our organization and what kind of situations she would be involved with on any given day. When a position became available, we knew she was the person for the job! Welcome, Misti!

13 Let the Construction Begin-AGAIN! Capital Campaign is in Full Swing! By Leslie Foley

I wrote this very same headline last year and you know what? We reopened house #3 on October 4, 2016, inside Children’s Hospital of San Antonio. A grand opening was held so donors and guests could view the beautiful and completely furnished 16 bedroom home on the 4th floor. But we aren’t finished yet! We are preparing to build house #4, steps away from our 2nd home, located in the Medical Center.

You might ask why, and it’s simple. We are committed to meeting the need for additional lodging for our families seeking our services. By the time we finish house #4 we will be able to provide a total of 77 rooms nightly to families requiring lodging.

Currently, local Ronald McDonald Houses provide 56 rooms nightly, but this is not enough to meet the need of families traveling to San Antonio so that their child may receive life-saving medical treatment. On an average, it costs $100.00 a night to keep a family at a Ronald McDonald House. There are 363 Ronald McDonald Houses in 42 countries/regions, and we are planning to increase this to 364! Fami- Wish List lies save an estimated $700 million in out-of-pocket lodging and meal expenses due to the presence of Ronald McDonald House and Ronald McDonald Family room programs. And last year, Ronald McDonald House Charities around the global helped serve over 7.1 million children and families. For the past 31 years I have had the privilege of serving as the Executive Director for Ronald McDonald House Charities of San Antonio. During this time I have witnessed countless events that have not only warmed my heart and made me aware of the existence of miracles, but also rein- forced my belief in the mission of Ronald McDonald House Charities and my choice to make this my second home.

I have seen the pure joy on the faces of families when they hear their child is being released from the hospital after many weeks or months of life saving treatments. I have seen the look of true understanding that parents from different families give one another when they realize they are not alone in their heartache and fear. I have heard the innocent laughter of children playing together and forgetting, if even for just a moment, about all of the blood draws, medications and illness that affect their young lives every day. The strength and resolve our guest families exhibit is an inspiration to me each and every day.

2016 was an exciting year for us. We re-opened our beautiful 16 bedroom home inside Children’s Hospital of San Antonio, welcoming several new employees into the RMH family. I continue to be excited that land has been secured, plans drawn and a contractor selected to build our 4th Ronald McDonald House complete with transplant suites for children undergoing both solid organ and bone marrow transplants! We are most fortunate to live in a city with state of the art medical facilities and world class physicians, however; this is exactly why there is such a press- ing need for the expansion of our services. Unfortunately, turning away families due to lack of space has become a daily occurrence. No parent should have to sleep in a car or on a cold hospital floor because all our beds are full and hotel rooms are too costly. Many of the families we serve would be unable to provide their child with the life-saving medical care they deserve if not for being able to stay at a Ronald McDonald House.

We are humbly asking for help from our community to raise the funds we so desperately need so we can reach our capital campaign goal and actually begin construction on our 4th home. We are known as the “house that love built” and we have never needed your love and support more! Please help us continue our mission and continue to provide a safe, loving home for the brave, innocent children who need us. We cannot do it without you! Gifts of any amount will have an immediate and positive impact.

The “magic” of Christmas can be a difficult feeling to put into words. The excitement of the season. The look of wonder on a child’s face. The feeling of togetherness. All of these things make us nostalgic and long for a time when the “magic” was real. RMHC of San Antonio has been very blessed to have 2 very special friends who embody all of these things and bring the magic of Christmas to our guest families each and every year....Mr. and Mrs. Santa Claus! Donating their time and talents, Mr. and Mrs. Claus visit all 3 of our houses to spread joy and love and bringing smiles to the faces of everyone they meet! No matter your age, when you are around them, you will be swept up in their holiday spirit and the magic of Christmas will fill your heart! Thank you so much to Santa and Mrs. Claus!

Last July we raised BIG money, $77,120 to be exact from the 6th Annual Chair-ity Gala. Guests mingled, placed bids and dined at the Old San Francisco Steak House. This year we will host the 7th Annual Chair-ity Gala on Thursday, July 27th, 2017. We have booked the same place and our favorite morning anchor, Kimberly Crawford, will return to guide us through the evening. Last year, we updated the invitation with pics of chairs provided by 34 artists, and devoured 1000 plus sweets from local bakeries. More than 100 auction items were donated by generous businesses and we added a few new sponsors.

So, why fix what isn’t broken? Let’s do it again! "DO IT SCARED"

The Friends of Ronald McDonald House held their annual Fall Luncheon on November 10, 2016 at the beautiful Greater San Antonio Builders Association Ballroom. Guests were greeted by Ronald McDon- ald, given photo opportunities and offered a glass of champagne as they browsed the lovely silent auction. Kimberly Crawford, Host of FOX San Antonio's Daytime@Nine, served as mistress of ceremonies and gave a warm introduction to featured speaker, Kathryn Clark Childers, one of the first five female Special Agents in the United States Secret Service. In her keynote address, "Do It Scared," Kathryn shared stories from her amazing life and coached the audience to identify their own personal "scared" ... the first step to courage.

The event was nearly sold-out with close to 200 guests attending and raising funds to support the the Ronald McDonald House Charities of San Antonio. The delicious luncheon was catered by Heavenly Gourmet Catering. Sponsors including Valero Energy Foundation, Energy Transfer, Silver Eagle Distributors, Imagine Homes, Amerigroup, Highland Homes, Interior Trade Cartel, Alpha Delta Pi Sorority, Security Service Federal Credit Union, Legacy Mortgage/Frontier Title, VCA Animal Hospitals and many others supported the 2nd Annual Friends of RMH Fall Luncheon.
