Abstract This article discusses a Khalkha reincarnate ruler, the First Jebtsundampa Zanabazar, who is commonly believed to be a Géluk protagonist whose alliance with the Dalai and Panchen Lamas was crucial to the dissemination of Buddhism in Khalkha Mongolia. Za- nabazar’s Géluk affiliation, however, is a later Qing-Géluk construct to divert the initial Khalkha vision of him as a reincarnation of the Jonang historian Tāranātha (1575–1634). Whereas several scholars have discussed the political significance of Zanabazar’s rein- carnation based only on textual sources, this article takes an interdisciplinary approach to discuss, in addition to textual sources, visual records that include Zanabazar’s por- traits and current findings from an ongoing excavation of Zanabazar’s Saridag Monas- tery. Clay sculptures and Zanabazar’s own writings, heretofore little studied, suggest that Zanabazar’s open approach to sectarian affiliations and his vision, akin to Tsongkhapa’s, were inclusive of several traditions rather than being limited to a single one. Introduction The First Jebtsundamba Khutukhtu (T. rJe btsun dam pa sprul sku) Öndör Gegeen Zanabazar is the most celebrated person in the history of Mongolian Buddhism, whose activities marked the important moments in the Mongolian politics, history, and cultural life, as they heralded the new era for the Mongols. His masterpieces of Buddhist sculptures exhibit a sophisticated accomplishment of the Buddhist iconometrical canon, a craftsmanship of the highest quality, and a refined, yet unfettered virtuosity. Zanabazar is believed to have single-handedly brought the tradition of Vajrayāna Buddhism to the late medieval Mongolia. Buddhist rituals, texts, temple construction, Buddhist art, and even designs for Mongolian monastic robes are all attributed to his genius. He also introduced to Mongolia the artistic forms of Buddhist deities, such as the Five Tath›gatas, Maitreya, Twenty-One T›r›s, Vajradhara, Vajrasattva, and others. They constitute a salient hallmark of his careful selection of the deities, their forms, and their representation. These deities and their forms of representation were unique to Zanabazar. Zanabazar is also accredited with building his main Buddhist settlement Urga (Örgöö), a mobile camp that was to reach out the nomadic communities in various areas of Mongolia and spread Buddhism among them. In the course of time, Urga was strategically developed into the main Khalkha monastery, Ikh Khüree, while maintaining its mobility until 1855. -

It increased my hunger to learn Buddhism and engage its tradition in social spectrum. Though the project is a symbolical presentation of Buddhist cultural and ethical values existing in Ladakh, Lumbini and Tawang. But it gives wide scope, specially me to learn, identify and explore more about these societies. My several visits in Ladakh has provided me plethora of knowledge and material to continue my research to produce a well explored monograph on Ladakh. I wish that I would be able to complete it in near future. I do acknowledge that report gives only peripheral knowledge about the theme of the project. It is dominantly oriented to Himalayan ranges of Ladakh. But in such short time, it was not possible to go for deep researches on these perspectives. However I have tried to keep my ideas original and tried for new orientation to early researches on topic. In future these ideas will be further elaborated and published. Keywords Siberia; Buryats; Mongols Siberia’s vast realms have often fallen outside the view of Asian Studies specialists, due perhaps to their centuries-long domination by Russia – a European power – and their lack of elaborately settled civilizations like those elsewhere in the Asian landmass. Yet Siberia has played a crucial role in Asian history. For instance, the Xiongnu, Turkic, and Mongol tribes who frequently warred with China held extensive Southern Siberian territories, and Japanese interventionists targeted Eastern Siberia during the Russian Civil War (1918- 1921). Moreover, far from being a purely ethnic-Russian realm, Siberia possesses dozens of indigenous Asian peoples, some of whom are clearly linked to other, more familiar Asian nations: for instance, the Buryats of Southeastern Siberia’s Lake Baikal region share par- ticularly close historic, ethnic, linguistic, religious, and cultural ties with the Mongols. The Buryats, who fell under Russian rule over the seventeenth century, number over 400,000 and are the largest native Siberian group. Most dwell in the Buryat Republic, or Buryatia, which borders Mongolia to the south and whose capital is Ulan-Ude (called “Verkheneu- dinsk” during the Tsarist period); others inhabit Siberia’s neighboring Irkutsk Oblast and Zabaikal’skii Krai (formerly Chita Oblast), and tens of thousands more live in Mongolia and China. -

In this article, materials devoted to the basic stages of the life and activity of a graduate of Vilna University (1821), Professor Osip Mikhailovich Kowalewski (1801–1878), are presented. He held the first chair of Mongolian literature in Russia and Europe and served as dean and rector of Kazan University. Prof Kowalewski made scientific trips to Siberia, Buryatia, Mongolia and China (1828–1833); collected unique books, manuscripts, and ethnographic materials of the people of Central Asia; and became the author of classical works concerning Buddhism and the history, languages, literature, religions, folklore, and ethnography of the Mongolian people. A graduate of Vilna (Vilnius) University, Osip Mikhailovich Kovalevskiy (Осип Михайлович Ковалевский, 1801–1878) (henceforth the Polish rendering of his surname ‘Kowalewski’ is used) is one of the founders of Mongolian research in Russia and Europe, an outstanding scholar with a wide range of research, and a corresponding member of the Russian Academy of Science. The name of this Russian and Polish scholar stands alongside other outstanding Russian orientalists: Christian Fren (Христиан Данилович Френ, 1782–1851), Aleksandr Kazem-Bek (Александр Касимович Казем-Бек 1802–1870), Ilya Berezin (Илья Николаевич Березин, 1818–1896), Vasiliy Bartold (Василий Владимирович Бартольд, 1869– 1930), Boris Vladimirtsov (Борис Яковлевич Владимирцов, 1884–1931), and others. -

In Asia, the growing trend for lay people to participate in personally transformative practices has arisen in response to, and in conversation with, external pressures. In most Buddhist societies the growing attraction of meditation has shifted expectations about how lay Buddhists and monastics should interact. Lay people, both men and women, have taken on new roles, such as meditation teachers, and now are engaging with transformative practices, rituals and texts, once predominantly deemed within the purview of Buddhist monastics alone. In Mongolia the trend to teach meditation in Buddhist centres has been a direct result of the transformation of religious ideas and practices amongst Tibetans in diaspora. After 1990, a number of global Buddhist organisations came to Mongolia with the hope of reseeding Buddhism. These Buddhist institutions combine Tibetan religious teachings with Western religious expectations and tend to be run under the auspices of high-ranking Tibetan religious figures who now live in the West, or in India, and have been affected by Western ideas about religious education. -

The imperial politics of diversity management and especially the legacies of confessional governance in the Russian Empire and the Soviet Union made the four “traditional religions”—Orthodox Christianity, Islam, Buddhism, and Judaism— an important part of “federal” nation-building. Despite the overall desecularization of the Russian state and the long history of relations between the state and organized Buddhism, the predominantly Buryat, centralized organization Buddhist Traditional Sangha of Russia did not assert its claim to represent all Russian Buddhists. State efforts to establish a system of four “traditional religions,” providing inter alia a spiritual foundation for Russian patriotism, also did not succeed. -
