Freeman, Ph.D. Department: School of Teacher Education and Leadership An organization’s leadership theory acts as a collection of primary guiding characteristics which influence corporate identity and destiny. Developing leaders has always been important for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Historically, the Church has promoted leadership ideals for all its members through various aspects of its doctrine and organization. This study provides a content analysis of multiple leadership texts pertaining to the ecclesiastical and educational wings of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints with the intent of revealing how Latter-day Saint leadership theory has developed over time. This study considers the unfolding of Latter- day Saint leadership theory from 1900 to 2017. The content analysis also provides greater understanding of how ecclesiastic leadership theory relates to leadership theory provided for the Church’s religious educators. To facilitate these kinds of insights the study utilized a contextual historical framework to enrich analysis. This approach considers iv how themes in Latter-day Saint leadership theory developed in relationship to other contemporary historical and theoretical trends. In addition to providing a broad view of essential Latter-day Saint leadership constructs, this study will provide invaluable insight into how the Church develops leaders, how it learns, and how it has remained vital through global expansion. Data derived from this analysis are used to answer the following three questions: (1) How has the idea of leadership changed over time in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and in its educational system? (2) What are the enduring themes and distinctive concepts of Latter-day Saint leadership theory? (3) What differences exist between the leadership constructs provided for ecclesiastical leaders in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and those of its educational system? Esplin Traveling along Illinois’ scenic Highway 96, the modern visitor to Nauvoo steps back in time. Horse-drawn carriages pass a bustling blacksmith shop and brick furnace. Tourists stroll through manicured gardens, venturing into open doorways where missionary guides recreate life in a religious city on a bend in the Mississippi River during the mid-1840s. The picture is one of prosper- ity, presided over by a stately temple monument on a bluff overlooking the community. Within minutes, if they didn’t know it already, visitors to the area quickly learn about the Latter-day Saint founding of the City of Joseph. While portraying an image of peace, students of the history of Nauvoo know a different tale, however. Unlike other historically recreated villages across the country, this one has a dark past. For the most part, the homes, and most important the temple itself, did not peacefully pass from builder to pres- ent occupant, patiently awaiting renovation and restoration. Rather, they lay abandoned, persisting only in the memory of a people who left them in search of safety in a high mountain desert more than thirteen hundred miles away. Firmly established in the tops of the mountains, their posterity returned more than a century later to create a monument to their ancestral roots. Much of the present-day religious, political, economic, and social power of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints traces its roots to Nauvoo, Illinois.

Peterson THE VERY TERM MORMON STUDIES suggests its own broad definition as a “big tent.”1 I take the adjective Mormon to refer to the subject matter, and not to the practitioners. It doesn’t require that those involved in the study of Mormonism be Latter-day Saints or believers. Mormon studies simply involves studies of things Mormon, including the Mormon people and their history but also their scriptures and their doctrines. Nothing in the term privileges, say, research into the reception history of the scriptures over philological, archaeological, and historical approaches linked to their claimed origin or Sitz im Leben—even if, as in the case of the Book of Mormon, that origin is controversial.2 Nor, by the same token, does the term in any way discriminate against reception his- tory or attempts to explain the Book of Mormon as a product of the nine- teenth century.
