Excellent!By Ally McMahonThe Munchkins of Oz Legends, Myths, and Realities is a fascinating and remarkable read. We all know the movie The Wizard of Oz. Most of us especially remember the Munchkins. This book will captivate you as it unveils a world not known to the masses. Here we learn of the Little People that acted as the Munchkins of Oz and helped make this movie one of the most famous of all time.Author Stephen Hoover covers all of the bases in his wonderfully informative and expertly written book. The topics include causes of diminished size in human beings, prejudices towards Little People, the casting of the Munchkins, the careers and backgrounds of the Little People, and how The Wizard of Oz changed the attitudes towards Little People. All of these topics are covered in fascinating detail. There are also many more topics covered in this wonderfully unique and informative book. For example, I was surprised to learn that some of the Little People came from Europe and were escaping persecution of the Nazi Regime. The history is rich and diverse.I was astonished to find out just how diverse and talented these people were and to learn that they were not treated fairly or with the respect that they definitely deserved. As you delve deeper into the chapters and lives of these wonderful people you will find yourself unable to stop reading. It will definitely lend another layer to a fantastic movie that has endured to this day. I highly recommend it!1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. A well written, nonfiction look at the Little People of Oz and Hollywood - a Great read!By Heather GDid you know that there were 124 Little People that participated in the filming of The Wizard of Oz in 1938? I didn’t. I also didn’t know that the treatment of Little People in the early decades of the last century were more on par with the treatment of children (which at the time was even less respectful than now), and less like the treatment an adult deserves? There are countless stories that surround the Little People of Oz, some true, some not. Stephen Hoover seeks to look behind the curtain of history, battling the rumors and misconceptions with his book, “The Munchkins of Oz: Legends, Myths and Realities.”Sharing personal stories the actors and actresses have shared before, along with narratives from other members of the staff, Hoover maps a timeline for these most impressive Hollywood staples. The Wizard of Oz was one of the largest productions that employed Little People, and the start of a change in attitude towards Little People and the way they were treated. He travels with them as they go on from the wonderful world of Oz to other productions, other plays and other roles, noting with some fervor two of the most famous Munchkins, Jerry Maren and Margaret Pellegrini. This informative, nonfiction offering is perfect for the movie trivia collector, fans of The Wizard of Oz, students of Hollywood, or anyone looking to expand their knowledge about the talented Little People who have graced the screen and touched our hearts.1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Would Recommend!By BeccaStephen Hoover has written an in-depth book about The Wizard of Oz that is focused on an interesting subject: The Munchkins. The Munchkins of Oz: Legends, Myths Realities is a wonderful tribute, although most have passed away. Out of the 124 that participated in the 1938 filming, Jerry Maren is the sole survivor. It discusses their lives and contributions in a respectful way; it also covered the everyday prejudices they faced. It was a different time. In the 30's, it wasn't too far removed from the time where freak show carnivals held more popularity. By the time of the filming, certain prejudices were still common. Many would treat “little people” condescendingly as if they were children. They didn't get paid as much. According to this book, even Toto was paid $125 per week. In comparison, they were only paid $50 per week. And there's more, you can read about it in the book. This is a fascinating and informative book. Mickey Carroll, Margaret Pellegrini, Meinhardt Raabe: These actors were all among those who portrayed the Munchkins in the 1939 production of The Wizard of Oz. When they and the other little people recruited for the parts were making their ways to California, they couldn’t have known that they’d end up being part of one of the most famous, and beloved, films of all time. In the years since, some of them became quite successful as actors and others faded into obscurity. There are very few left alive, but in their later years, they left a rich legacy of first-hand accounts of being involved in the production and what it was like to be a little person and an actor at the time that’s endlessly fascinating. This book explores that, and more. Learn about the production of The Wizard of Oz and how the little people who played the Munchkins were treated on set and off. Learn about their lives afterward and how they became the central focus of some of the largest Oz themed events in the world. The film lived on throughout the 20th Century—and still does today—on television, but there’s much more to the Oz story than what we see in the 1939 film and the world that L. Frank Baum created was much richer than people might believe. The book also takes a look at films related to Oz and to the Munchkins themselves. From the unfair and untrue accounts of their off-set behavior that have been entered into urban legend to the films that took the Munchkins and allowed them another chance to shine on screen, you’ll find plenty of related cinematic material to explore. While The Wizard of Oz is a great film, the stories of the people involved in it are fascinating, as well, and the stories of the Munchkins haven’t been told as much as they deserve, but are related in detail here.
