    CHAPTER FOURTEEN MALAWI’S ORPHANS: CHILDREN’S RIGHTS IN RELATION TO HUMANITARIANISM, COMPASSION, AND CHILDCARE Andrea Freidus1 My first reaction is the feeling of helplessness, and hopelessness. Seeing so many eyes of the orphans, innocent and pure makes me feel a little over- whelmed…Poverty and HIV/AIDS, malaria, are now all over southern Africa… Without a heart of compassion and love, without a true passion in helping and offering Madonna could not do this. So I give more credit to her now than before, and I see this as a gift to Malawi rather than a tool of celebrity propaganda. —MSU undergraduate after viewing Madonna’s documentary on Malawi. As an assignment for a women’s studies undergraduate course, students viewed the film “I am Because We Are.” Produced by Madonna to raise awareness about her organization, Raising Malawi, it focuses on the situa- tion of orphans and AIDS in Malawi. Students were asked to respond to the content of the documentary including their perceptions of orphans in Malawi, their overall reaction, and the film’s impact on their desire to be connected or involved with these issues. The above quote is one of many that captures the ability of humanitarians and the organizations they sup- port to use the media to foster an emotional response. This response is based on the recognition of a common humanity and the need to address suffering. The student’s reaction highlights the power of the image of the orphan to bring about a sense of compassion drawing on the innocence of children.

ICCAT, 77(4): 240-251 (2020) 1 REVIEW ON THE EFFECT OF HOOK TYPE ON THE CATCHABILITY, HOOKING LOCATION, AND POST-CAPTURE MORTALITY OF THE SHORTFIN MAKO, ISURUS OXYRINCHUS B. Keller1*, Y. Swimmer2, C. Brown3 SUMMARY Due to the assessed vulnerability for the North Atlantic shortfin mako, Isurus oxyrinchus, ICCAT has identified the need to better understand the use of circle hooks as a potential mitigation measure in longline fisheries. We conducted a literature review related to the effect of hook type on the catchability, anatomical hooking location, and post-capture mortality of this species. We found twenty eight papers related to these topics, yet many were limited in interpretation due to small sample sizes and lack of statistical analysis. In regards to catchability, our results were inconclusive, suggesting no clear trend in catch rates by hook type. The use of circle hooks was shown to either decrease or have no effect on at-haulback mortality. Three papers documented post-release mortality, ranging from 23-31%. The use of circle hooks significantly increased the likelihood of mouth hooking, which is associated with lower rates of post-release mortality. Overall, our review suggests minimal differences in catchability of shortfin mako between hook types, but suggests that use of circle hooks likely results in higher post-release survival that may assist population recovery efforts. Cohen Washington, D.C. 2010 The Concept of “Sister Churches” In Catholic-Orthodox Relations since Vatican II Will T. Cohen, Ph.D. Director: Paul McPartlan, D.Phil. Closely associated with Catholic-Orthodox rapprochement in the latter half of the 20 th century was the emergence of the expression “sister churches” used in various ways across the confessional division. Patriarch Athenagoras first employed it in this context in a letter in 1962 to Cardinal Bea of the Vatican Secretariat for the Promotion of Christian Unity, and soon it had become standard currency in the bilateral dialogue. Yet today the expression is rarely invoked by Catholic or Orthodox officials in their ecclesial communications. As the Polish Catholic theologian Waclaw Hryniewicz was led to say in 2002, “This term…has now fallen into disgrace.” This dissertation traces the rise and fall of the expression “sister churches” in modern Catholic-Orthodox relations and argues for its rehabilitation as a means by which both Catholic West and Orthodox East may avoid certain ecclesiological imbalances toward which each respectively tends in its separation from the other. Catholics who oppose saying that the Catholic Church and the Orthodox Church are sisters, or that the church of Rome is one among several patriarchal sister churches, generally fear that if either of those things were true, the unicity of the Church would be compromised and the Roman primacy rendered ineffective.
