(2006). Qualitative investigation of young children's music preferences. International Journal of Education & the Arts, 7(9). Retrieved [date] from http://ijea.asu.edu/v7n9/. Abstract This qualitative study examined young children’s music preferences through group conversations with children, interviews with parents, and non- participant observation of classroom settings in daycare and elementary classrooms. Data were analyzed inductively to generate themes, and revealed that (1) children expressed distinct preferences for an eclectic range of music from very early ages; (2) rock and popular music were frequently mentioned as preferred styles by parents and children, with movie and television soundtracks high in popularity; (3) music listening was characterized by a reliance on diverse technologies, with listening inextricably interwoven with viewing; and (4) music listening and experiences in the home described by children and parents varied considerably from what was offered in the school and daycare settings. Findings from this study contribute to an understanding of young children’s music preferences and listening habits in contemporary Western society. International Journal of Education & the Arts Vol. 7 No. 9 2 Introduction The week’s theme in the older toddlers’ room at the daycare center was “The Zoo.” Decorated with pictures of camels, monkeys and gorillas, along with stuffed animals and puppets, the spacious room displayed a large sign proclaiming, “Welcome to the Pearson1 Zoo. -

Open FINAL DISSERTATION VITA2019
The Pennsylvania State University The Graduate School College of Education IN HER OWN WORDS: (DE)MARGINALIZING BLACK IMMIGRANT GIRLHOOD IN AN EMANCIPATORY LITERACY CLASSROOM A Dissertation in Curriculum and Instruction by Wideline Seraphin © Wideline Seraphin Submitted in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree of Doctor of Philosophy May 2019 ii The dissertation of Wideline Seraphin was reviewed and approved by the following: Jeanine M. Staples Associate Professor of Education Dissertation Adviser Chair of Committee Mark T. Kissling Assistant Professor of Education Dana Stuchul Professor of Education Esther Prins Professor of Education Gwendolyn Lloyd Professor of Education Head of Graduate Program * Signatures are on file in The Graduate School iii ABSTRACT Black Haitian and Haitian American (H/HA) girls exist within multiple intersections that are not adequately addressed in Literacy Studies. This study offers theoretical and pedagogical insights on what it means to teach and study Black girls from transnational communities. The objective was to conceptualize a space which centered the intersectional lives of Black immigrant girls, and create emancipatory learning experiences in reading and writing instruction. The research questions were: How do H/HA girls enrolled in HELP narrate their identities, place, and girlhood in autobiographical writing? In what ways do H/HA girls generate Discourses of race, place, and girlhood through discursive practices in HELP’s classroom? How do the institutional practices of HELP attempt to center the needs and talents of H/HA girls? How does HELP reconfigure learning spaces? This embedded case study examines two units for analysis: the literacies of five H/HA girls, and the institutional practices of the HELP program. -

Can You Predict a Hit?
CAN YOU PREDICT A HIT? FINDING POTENTIAL HIT SONGS THROUGH LAST.FM PREDICTORS BACHELOR THESIS MARVIN SMIT (0720798) DEPARTMENT OF ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE RADBOUD UNIVERSITEIT NIJMEGEN SUPERVISORS: DR. L.G. VUURPIJL DR. F. GROOTJEN Abstract In the field of Music Information Retrieval, studies on Hit Song Science are becoming more and more popular. The concept of predicting whether a song has the potential to become a hit song is an interesting challenge. This paper describes my research on how hit song predictors can be utilized to predict hit songs. Three subject groups of predictors were gathered from the Last.fm service, based on a selection of past hit songs from the record charts. By gathering new data from these predictors and using a term frequency-inversed document frequency algorithm on their listened tracks, I was able to determine which songs had the potential to become a hit song. The results showed that the predictors have a better sense on listening to potential hit songs in comparison to their corresponding control groups. A Linguistic Analysis of the Era of Violence in African American Spirituals, Jazz, & Blues 179
Nihonbashi Gakkan University Hirona Matayoshi:Sociolinguistics: A Linguistic Analysis of the Era of Violence in African American Spirituals, Jazz, & Blues 179 開智国際大学紀要 第 15 号(2016) 報告・資料 Sociolinguistics: A Linguistic Analysis of the Era of Violence in African American Spirituals, Jazz, & Blues - Civil Action and Effective Citizenship Education through the Language War 1 Matayoshi, Hirona (又吉弘那) This paper is a linguistic critical analysis by reflecting upon Robin Tolmach Lakoff’s sociolinguistic analysis within her brilliant understanding of linguistics in her book, “The Language War”. She portrays her understanding of linguistics though current events in time. She discusses about how politics and the people are entwined within the “Language War”. Although her book was written in the year 2000, we are continuing her theory. We will add new current event issues to her theory while reflecting along with her book. According to Professor Lakoff, the purpose of linguistics is to translate and interpret the meanings of events for the next generation. Therefore, the writer of this article will follow Professor Lakoff’s strategies while explaining past issues toward recent issues that are occurring in the news so we can understand the meaning of the “Language War”. We must first look at the “Language War” in the testimony of violence within African American Blues, Jazz, and Spirituals. African American Blues, Jazz, and Spirituals are historical voices, resources, databases of witnesses, and victims of the past. These voices screamed out the inequality of generations. In a way, they are still surviving a "Language War" even today. They screamed for help in protest and yet due to those who perpetuated the violence of segregation, intimidation, and discrimination that took place, “no one” could help them but continued to avoid the problem.
