Keywords: Llyn y Fan Fach, corrie, plucking, abrasion, tarn, moraine. Introduction/ISM: Timing Image of Llyn y Fan Fach – how was this lake created? Classroom discussion. 5 mins Explain the history of Llyn y Fan Fach describing where the lake is. Llyn y Fan Fach is a 10 hectare lake on the western side of the Brecon Beacons. The lake itself is overlooked by the mountain peaks of Picws Du and Waun Lefrith. The northern face of Waun Lefrith was home to a glacier during the Ice Ages which gouged out the corrie (or cwm) in which 10 Llyn y Fan Fach now sits. mins Describe using the PowerPoint how a corrie lake is formed over time. Activity one 10 Describe how a corrie lake is created mins Activity two Draw and label a corrie. Pupils should use all of the keywords in their diagram and make sure that their earlier description includes meanings of all keywords. More able pupils (or classes) should use worksheet ‘draw and label the formation of a corrie’ and should draw and label the formation at the beginning 15-20 of the last Ice Age, during the Ice Age and after the Ice Age. mins After pupils have completed their tables, they should close their workbooks. Pupils should then match up keywords and meanings on the attached 10 worksheet from memory. If short on time this can be completed as a class mins activity through the PowerPoint. Plenary: Conclude by discussing whether pupils know of any other corrie lakes. Extension work: Pupils could look on the internet to find other examples of corries and tarns. Differentiation: ALN pupils can use the attached worksheet when labelling and drawing a corrie. MAT pupils should complete the ‘draw and label the formation of a corrie worksheet’ Assessment: Through classroom questioning and through marking of classwork. Resources: PowerPoint, match the keywords worksheet, label a corrie worksheet, draw and label the formation of a corrie worksheet. Guided Walks and Events Programme Winter 2011-12
Cymdeithas Parc Bannau Brycheiniog Brecon Beacons Park Society www.breconbeaconsparksociety.org GUIDED WALKS AND EVENTS PROGRAMME WINTER 2011-12 Most of these walks go into the hills. Participants are reminded that the following gear must be taken. Walking boots, rucksack, hats, gloves, warm clothing (not jeans), spare sweater, water and a hot drink, lunch, extra food and of course waterproof jackets and trousers. A whistle and torch should be carried, particularly during the winter months. Participants must satisfy themselves that the walk is suitable for their abilities. You can take advice by ringing the walk leader whose telephone number is given. No liability will be accepted for loss or injury that occurs as a result of taking part. An adult must accompany young people (under 18). MOST OF THESE WALKS ARE FOR EXPERIENCED WALKERS Leaders may change or cancel the advertised route due to adverse weather conditions. Strenuous walks require fitness and stamina to cope with several steep climbs and/or cover a good distance at a steady pace. Energetic walks generally involve two steep climbs but they will still require determined application. Moderate walks will seldom have steep climbs but if they do the climb will be taken at a relaxed pace. Dogs (well controlled) are permitted unless stated otherwise in the programme. It should be noted that under the CROW Act, when taking dogs onto Open Access land they must be on a fixed lead, no more than two metres long, whenever livestock are near, and at ALL TIMES from 1st March to 31st July. Non-members of the Park Society will be asked to make a donation of £5.00 each per walk .

Llyn Y Fan Fach (Lake of the Small Beacon-Hill) Llyn Y Fan Fach Is a 10 Hectare Lake on the Western Side of the Brecon Beacons
Llyn y Fan Fach (Lake of the small beacon-hill) Llyn y Fan Fach is a 10 hectare lake on the western side of the Brecon Beacons. The lake itself is overlooked by the mountain peaks of Picws Du and Waun Lefrith. The northern face of Waun Lefrith was home to a glacier during the Ice Age which gouged out the corrie (or cwm) in which Llyn y Fan Fach now sits. Llyn y Fan Fach is an example of a corrie lake. A corrie is formed when snow collects in a hollow on the side of a mountain. Over time as more snow falls, snow below is compacted to form ice. This ice then deepens and widens the corrie via the process of abrasion and plucking. Gravity will compel the ice to try to move downhill, even though it is unable to as it is trapped in the hollow. As the ice rotates is carves out an armchair shaped hollow with a steep back wall. A moraine (a build up of debris) is formed on the edge of the corrie stopping the ice as it builds up from being able to move downhill. When the ice in a corrie melts, a circular lake is often formed at the bottom of the hollow, this is know as a tarn. Llyn y Fan Fach was a corrie over 11000 years ago during the last Ice Age. 1. PLANED: Natural Capital Audit West Wales Biodiversity 2008 1 APPENDIX 1: Farmer Profiles Intensive farmers (dairy) Farmer 1 Farm 1 supports 3 sons as well as parents, and therefore on a farm of 430 acres (plus 170 acres of rented land), diversification has been necessary. They own an agri-contracting business and permit shooting walks on the farm. They are milking over 150 cows, and grow arable crops on their land: 46 acres of maize and 230 acres of corn. They are currently not in any agri-environment scheme other than a Catchment Sensitive Farming project: Deep Ford Brook project. However, he says that again, this brings with it more red tape: he can now not increase stock numbers, and believes this is just another way of getting information regarding fertiliser usage: “it is just NVC through the back door”. Farmer 1 adds that “a stocking rate of 1 cow per acre has been pushed by the government over the past 40 years” and therefore, due to financial reasons, they cannot justify any management regulations placed on their productive grazing land.

Well, Scotland has it’s Munros (among others) and the Lakes have their Wain- rights. Wales doesn’t have a list of summits in it’s own right. While there are hills known as Nualls, they are not speciﬁc to Wales and include an ever in- creasing list of summits with 30 metres drop all around, making for a long list. It is also rather patronising for the Welsh and English hills (which I do not con- cern myself with here) to be included with that of a neighbouring country. Some lists also sck to the old imperial ﬁgure of 2000 feet making a mountain, or 610 metres, which really is rather clumsy in metric. Washis are all the hills in Wales that are over 600m and have at least 50 me- tres drop all around. Some notable tops have not made it into the main list, including some of the tradional ‘3000 Footers’. There are some other sum- mits missing from the list. Y Garn on the Nantlle ridge for one, an excellent viewpoint or Bera Mawr, an excellent lile scramble to the summit tor. Fan Y Big in the Beacons fails to make it too. Just because they’re not on the list, doesn’t mean they’re not worth vising.
