Like most of the audience I didn’t 7 • 27 • 88 know what to expect. From a man who used to play next to Buster Poindexter ► He’s the new messiah of and the Banshees lounge lizards! He’s fast. He’s groovy. He’s a lady’s man; of Blue Sinatra in disguise. In troducing Buster Poindexter. Yeah, he played at the El Paseo a week ago yesterday. If you weren’t there you shoulda been. The action-packed show started on schedule with the Johnny Thunders in the New York Dolls dressed in drag complete with wig, rouge, lipstick and four-inch plat forms, to the star of s alsa- PU Pee-Wee ►2A rumba band ... something smells of the descendent POWAQQUATSI ►2A cheese of Frank Sinatra, (Continued on p.4A) Bruce Pulls Through ►3A Cleese’s Cheese ►4A procession of Buster’s band members entering the courtyard from the above balcony. STRANDED AT THE DRIVE-IN – The Introductory Chapter Stranded at the drive-in Feeling a fool What will they say Monday at school? The above lyric, taken from the song Sandy as sung by John Travolta in the film version of Grease, lends this book an appropriate title. Not only do we get a cinema reference, but a neat summing-up of a few of the key elements of teen fiction: thwarted romance, peer pressure, school, the quest for night-time pleasure, fear of humiliation. Grease’s perennial popularity lies in its inter-generational understanding of the pain of being a teenager, and its ability to see those growing pains from both sides of the gender divide. The fact that the songs are catchy and the jokes are dirty and sweet doesn’t hurt either. But Grease is just one of many films about being a teenager that resonate with cinema audiences long after their initial release. And I figured it was high time someone took a long, hard look at the reasons why. Ergo Stranded At The Drive-In, an attempt to choose the 100 best teen movies since the 1950’s and search out the meanings and messages that have made the teen movie the most vibrant sub-genre in modern film. An outrageous claim? I don’t think so. Here’s a quick list of great movies of the last few years: Juno; Twilight; Napoleon Dynamite; The Class; Superbad; Kidulthood; Donnie Darko; Teeth; Hard Candy… yep – all teen movies. Now let me have it with a list of recent non-teen movies that are good as that bunch.

Fabricating the absolute Fake Fabricating When rock star Bono told Oprah Winfrey that America is an ideal that is supposed to be contagious, the talk show host was moved to tears. Such an imagined America, rather than the nation-state USA, is the topic of Fabricating the Absolute Fake. Pop and politics become intertwined, as Hollywood, television, and celebrities spread the American Dream around the world. Using concepts such as the absolute fake and karaoke Americanism, the book examines this global mediation as well as the way America is appropriated in pop culture produced outside of the USA, as demonstrated by such diverse cultural icons as the Elvis- inspired crooner Lee Towers and the Moroccan-Dutch rapper Ali B. This revised and extended edition includes a new chapter on Barack Obama and Michael Jackson as global celebrities and a new afterword on teaching American pop culture.
