A letter from your Editor Hello That dratted virus seems to be affecting everything, but I reckon not to panic too much. What happened to the Stiff Upper Lip? We must keep an eye on folks who don’t do internet orders though and who may become so very isolated. At least we can phone! We do have good community spirit round here in our villages, so we will need to put it to the test. For those of us living alone, a grocery order of £40-£60 minimum is a lot of stuff, so perhaps we can join with another for a shared order...? Some wag in my newspaper has said that if we are obliged to self-isolate, we can do all that drawer sorting, loft clearing, papers sorting that we’ve been putting off for years! I reckon my house full of stuff will require a lot more than a fortnight! How has all that stuff collected? Where’s it all come from? I’m sure I ‘m not alone in this! When the fuss dies down, I reckon the Salvation Army, Women’s Refuge and all will be inundated with things... But Spring is here and the daffodils are out, and the birds are yelling their heads off at obscenely early hours in the morning now. Spring Equinox any day now! I’m pleased to say that my friend Erica is taking over the Green Page with what I might call Wizard Wheezes, but what nowadays are called Life Hacks! If you have any wheezes or hacks, send them to me. Save money while saving the planet! As you’ll see from the calendar of events at the back, there is a lot going on and a lot planned. If you have an event, please check you aren’t clashing with another one, then there’s more fun for all. Best wishes Jane

Jackie Nixon It is with the greatest of sadness that we have to let you all know that Jackie passed away on Sunday March 8, 2020 surrounded by her family. We know she is now at peace but we are heartbroken that she has been taken from us. We wished to say a very personal thank you to all in the village whom have supported Jackie and us throughout. She loved living in Dry Doddington and took the greatest of joy in walking with her Grandson, Miles, to the local farms and fields to see all the animals! With warm wishes and loving hearts, Roger, Jeremy, Victoria, Martin & Miles xxxxxx

DRY DODDINGTON IS HAVING A BIG PROBLEM WITH DOG POO! Some selfish people are NOT clearing up after their pets! You MUST clear up if you are within a 30mile speed limit area The consequences of leaving it lying around are really serious, please read the info below! Collect it in a bag, not on your shoes Village dog owners, who behave unsociably and don't clear up after their dog, give other law-abiding doggy- owners a bad name. It is an offence to allow your dog to foul any areas of land which aredesignated public places (such as pathways, road-sides with a 3Omph limit or below, picnic a, etc). The fine is up to £1,000 if you are taken to court, or you could receive a fixed penalty of £50. It is also terribly unsociable to be a careless dog owner. Children can walk in the mess on their way to or from school, or they may accidentally ride their bicycles or scooters through it. Their parents or teachers are the ones who will have to clear up the mess, not the person who has carelessly left it there in the first place. Anyone can step in it on a dark path and take it home on their shoes, too. Dog fouling is a major concern to many people, not just because of the mess it causes, but because it can be a health risk. Dogs may deposit roundworm eggs (toxocara canis) in their faeces, which become infectious after about three weeks, and can remain so for up to two years. Anyone, but particularly children playing near to the ground, can run the risk of picking up and swallowing the eggs. The eggs then hatch in the intestine, burrow through the intestine wall into the blood stream and pass into the body. So next time you are tempted to leave your dog's mess on the path, or throw the poo bag into the hedge, thinking it won't matter, let your conscience be pricked by the thought of your actions causing a round-worm infection to a child or an old person with arthritis having to get down on their hands and knees and scrub their carpets and shoes after inadvertently walking in it.

Claypole Magazine April 2020 page 13 Neighbourhood Watch How safe is your vehicle ??

Although there have been very few reports from , issuing warnings about vehicle crimes. equipment can easily overcome these. – possibly for use on stolen vehicles for use in other crimes such as burglary. where criminals use when leaving even for a few minutes and especially in busy areas and at night. Please do not leave valuable property such as satnavs, wallets, laptops or phones in vehicles, even if they are out of sight. best policy is always to be vigilant and take steps to reduce the risk as much as possible. If you do see anything suspicious please contact police immediately on 101 or 999. If you don’t tell them they won’t know.

We all know that we should be doing 'something' to reduce our impact on our environment but doesn't it sometimes feel daunting and just too big a task for us as individuals to tackle?. Here are a few tips from The Wildfowl and Wetlands trust to help us make small changes in our own households that can have far reaching benefits to our water supply and the wildlife (and ourselves) that depend on that water. Six things that definitely SHOULD NOT go down your sink or toilet- • Bleach based cleaning products. • Wet wipes. Including those that are supposedly 'flushable' (these products contribute to an estimated and whopping 93% of all sewerage blockages) they are bad for our environment on many levels. • Food, fats, oils and greases. Combined with other debris including the previous and next items on the list, the resulting sewer blockages become a serious problem. • Sanitary products. Say no more! • Micro fibres and plastics. Always fill your washing machine for each wash, you can use a special laundry bag to trap micro fibres and prevent them entering the waste system. • Old medication. Return these to your pharmacy. Try making your own cleaning products (more ideas next month!) This article is based on information from the Wildfowl and Wetlands trust website, There are loads of ideas and tips available from many environmental organisations and from your water supplier (Anglian water in this area) On their website you can also read about the “three P's”. A very simple rule! Check it out! Erica Hine Getting rid of furniture and working electricals. Can be taken to the British Heart Foundation shop in but if you want stuff collected, this has been transferred to Mansfield, 01623 549 420 – ring them and make your arrangements If you have problems with wanting to get rid of stuff but don’t want strangers involved, then contact any WI member you know or any parish councillor who can get in touch with us. It all goes to help people down on their luck through no fault of their own! Do you have any old or unwanted household items like pots and pans, crockery, cutlery, sheets and towels? Kids’ toys? The WI collect these to give to Newark Women’s Refuge to help the women and children start a new, safe home, as often they are left with absolutely nothing. Contact Kathleen 016366 626860 or Jane 01400 281206 Claypole Magazine April 2020 page 25 Dear Editor I thought perhaps you would like to have this recipe that is a hit with my friends. Because I wanted something that was low fat and low sugar I adapted it from a Magimix recipe called Lemon Cotswold. Very Yummy Recipe: Lemon Cheesecake My "Lemon Cheesecake" can be made in a lower fat, lower sugar version. INGREDIENTS: 75g butter melted (or use a lighter butter) 100g Digestive biscuits (or sugar free/light ones) 1 Lemon Jelly (or sugar free Jelly) 200ml of a cream or Elmlea that can be whipped 300g Cream Cheese (or a lighter version) Juice of 1 lemon 8 inch cake tin, loose bottom one is easier . METHOD Grease the cake tin. Mix the butter and biscuit crumbs together to make the base and press evenly into the tin. (If you would like a thicker base, then double the amount of butter and biscuits). Dissolve the jelly in 100ml hot water and then leave to cool (not set) before adding to the cream cheese mix. Beat the cream until it just takes shape, then beat in the cream cheese and the lemon juice, then the dissolved jelly. Pour the whole mixture over the biscuit base and chill for at least 2 hours, by which time it should have set. To release the cheesecake from the tin, dip a palette knife in hot water and run it carefully around the edge. This recipe can be varied with the different flavours of jelly and omitting the lemon juice and serving with fruit. Kathleen Thomas Editor’s Note: This is very yummy although I have only had a tiny piece and so am concernedwhether this is enough evidence for my opinion (cheeky hint!)

Claypole Magazine April 2020 page 27 This time, it’s a poem about the tiny, often overlooked, village of Westborough...

Westborough

We’ve always been here in a bend of the river... Keeping our heads down... We saw the chief buried in splendour but.. we Keep our heads down... We heard the thundering hooves and the tramps of Roman boots... but we Keep our heads down... The Saxons spread and quietly joined us We fortified our burgh protected by the river ... and still Keep our heads down... The Vikings roared through but we barely noticed Keeping our heads down... Then the Normans came, counted cattle and pigs And remodelled the church yet we Keep our heads down... For a thousand years we have listened... As the Great North Road rolled past And the river floated by too shallow for trade Then the railway steamed past on our other side It’s all still going past as we Keep our heads down...
