The Beginning of Orthodoxy in America Orthodoxy in America began in 1794, when Russian missionaries from Valaam Monastery arrived at Kodiak Island in the Aleutian Islands.1 The beginning of Orthodoxy in this country was found mainly in the future state of Alaska (which was a part of Russia) and in California, but very quickly grew up in the industrial areas of the United States such as Minnesota, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Connecticut, New York, and West Virginia. The entirety of North America and Canada was one large diocese with very scattered Orthodox communities.

As always it has been a very busy Great Lent here at SVOTS, and one full of great blessings. Among those blessings are the increased number of prospective students expressing interest in St. Vladimir's. Our alumnae will be happy to know we have quite a number of applications from woman for both the M.A. and M.Div. degrees. Of course we are always looking for more students and we always appreciate and count on the help of our alumni in the field to assist in identifying those young (and old) men and woman who have been called to serve the church and learn about the Orthodox Faith in deeper ways. This brings me to our first piece of news— FULLY FUNDED TUITION PLAN As you have no doubt seen by now, we have launched a new and ambitious scholarship program to help defray the costs of a St. Vladimir's Education. Representing the Russian Orthodox Church at the meeting were also Metropolitan Hilarion of Volokolamsk, chairman of the Moscow Patriarchate’s Department for External Church Relations; Bishop Kliment of Krasnoslobodsk and Temnikov; Archpriest Nikolai Balashov, DECR vice-chairman; Archpriest Igor Yakimchuk, DECR secretary for inter-Orthodox relations; and Mr. Sergei Monakhov, DECR staff member. His Beatitude Metropolitan Tikhon was accompanied by Archbishop David of Sitka and Alaska; Archimandrite Andrei (Hoarşte), bishop-elect of Cleveland, auxiliary to the archbishop of the Romanian Episcopate of the Orthodox Church in America; Archpriest Alexander Rentel, chancellor of the OCA; Archpriest Daniel Andrejuk, rector of the OCA Representation in Moscow; and Protodeacon Joseph Matusiak, secretary to the OCA Primate. Prior to the brotherly meeting His Beatitude Metropolitan Tikhon of All America and Canada celebrated a moleben at the Church of All Russian Saints. During the meeting that followed His Holiness Patriarch Kirill expressed satisfaction with the high level of bilateral relations between the Russian Orthodox Church and the Orthodox Church in America. His Holiness mentioned an educational project of the Summer Institute, organized by Ss. Cyril and Methodius Theological Institute of Postgraduate Studies for representatives of various Churches who come to Moscow to learn more about the life of the Russian Orthodox Church.
