The company is celebrating their 35th anniversary this year, and we join them in celebration of this milestone. In a rare treat for lovers of ballet, and lovers of beautiful music, Hong Kong Ballet has commissioned acclaimed Australian choreographer Natalie Weir to create a dramatic and romantic story ballet from Puccini’s famous opera, Turandot. Weir’s exquisite partnering work and signature dance vocabulary is the perfect choice to bring this story of love and sacrifice to vibrant life. • Press Release
For Immediate Release!! ! ! ! ! ! Goh Ballet Creates Unique Dance Opportunity between Canada and China Forms Partnership with National Ballet of China, Guangzhou Ballet Company and Guangzhou Art School of China ~ A Canadian First November 6, 2013 - Beijing, China - In a Canadian ballet first, the Vancouver-based Goh Ballet Academy, lead by Director Chan Hon Goh, has created a unique opportunity to foster dance between Canada and China. Goh has formalized her long-standing relationship with the National Ballet of China, signing a memorandum of understanding (MoU) while in Beijing, which will benefit dancers and teachers in both countries. She will do the same with the Guangzhou Ballet Company and the Guangzhou Art School of China later this week, underscoring the importance of Guangzhou as Vancouver’s sister-city. The MoU’s, supported by the Canadian and Chinese governments, will enable the companies, their dancers, instructors and choreographers to collaborate on productions, broaden their scope of dance to include both Eastern and Western choreography, participate in educational and cultural exchanges, and co-present ballets in both countries. “I am so humbled and honoured that these revered companies – including the National Ballet of China, China’s first and largest ballet company – have chosen the Goh Ballet for their first formal Canadian partnerships,” said Goh. “This expression of mutual support is incredibly significant for the companies and related dance professionals, but also signifies a collaborative arts relationship between Canada and China which has both cultural and economic benefit.” Goh, a former Prima Ballerina with the National Ballet of Canada, is touring China as part of the Vancouver-China Business & Cultural Mission, led by Vancouver Mayor Gregor Robertson and the Vancouver Economic Commission (VEC).

  • Giselle 11 to 14 March 2010, 8Pm at Victoria Theatre
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE presents Giselle 11 to 14 March 2010, 8pm at Victoria Theatre 15 January 2010, SINGAPORE – A great romantic ballet soars onto the stage as Singapore Dance Theatre (SDT) presents Giselle this March at Victoria Theatre, with staging by Janek Schergen, after Jean Coralli and Jules Perrot. Drawing audiences into a work that embodies elements of the Romantic period, Giselle is a ballet filled with mystery, otherworldly beauty, excitement, danger and death. As breathtaking as it is heartbreaking, Giselle tackles the gamut of human emotions, delving into the darker shades of humanity, including elements of madness and revenge, thus making many critics refer to Giselle as ‘the Hamlet of ballets’. With music by Adolphe Adam, Giselle – also known as Les Wilis – premiered in Paris in 1841 and is the oldest consistently-performed ballet in the world. A sought after role for many ballerinas, Giselle demands both exquisite technique and daring dramatic skills from the dancer. The first act is colourful, bright, optimistic and light, while the second act, ironically called the “white act” is much more formal, dark and unsettling. As Giselle, the prima ballerina handling this role has to switch dramatically and believably from a young and innocent maiden in Act 1, to, literally, a ghost of her former self in Act 2, where Giselle has died and turned into an embittered wilis – a female spirit who exists to seek revenge on unfaithful and deceitful men. The eponymous ballet tells of the tragic love story between a village maiden, Giselle , and a nobleman, Albrecht. Mesmerized by her beauty and innocence, Albrecht disguises himself as a peasant and promises eternal love to Giselle despite being betrothed to a Duke’s daughter, Bathilde.

  • “Young Stars Shine” in Oregon International Ballet Academy's Charming Nutcracker
For Immediate Release: “Young Stars Shine” in Oregon International Ballet Academy’s Charming Nutcracker “engaged my jaded attention from the first excited jumps in the party scene to the elaborate wrapup of the action that concludes the ballet" - Oregon ArtsWatch, 2018 PORTLAND, OR (September 23, 2019): Following last year’s rave reviews and sold-out show, the Oregon International Ballet Academy, expands to offer an additional performance of its seasonal favorite, The Nutcracker. Driven by a unique and brilliant concept, OIBA’s Nutcracker melds the charm and childhood joy of student dancers with stunning appearances from the school’s top performers and from surprise guest artists, local celebrities of the ballet world. The result is a high-quality, cohesive and exhilarating experience for audiences and participants alike. Martha Ullman West of Oregon ArtsWatch wrote of last year’s performance: “Young stars shine at Oregon International Ballet Academy… (in) a fully produced Nutcracker, with charming sets and costumes… Clearly the party children – all 22 of them, not counting Clara and her friends, and naughty brother Fritz – were having a tremendously good time, from the smallest to the tallest, and that, too, made the party livelier than it often is.” Especially impressive is that this production uses live music, provided by the Metropolitan Youth Symphony. This unique and strategic partnership has been ongoing for three years, serving to enrich the student experience at both organizations.
