Ph.D. Candidate iii Abstract This thesis proposes and maps a nascent subfield of scholarship within the science- and-religion field that examines the intersection of science, religion, and literature; simultaneously, it draws out and argues for the benefits of incorporating literature into science-and-religion studies. The suggested label for this body of scholarship is the science-religion-and-literature field. Scholarship within this proposed field is relatively new and has yet to be thus brought together. The mapping of this field is done by considering how literature is incorporated into science-and-religion studies. Although there is a growing body of scholarship that incorporates literature into science-and-religion studies, scholarship has yet to address how incorporating literature benefits the wider science-and-religion field. Therefore, this thesis argues that there are ways to incorporate literature that allow literary texts and the tools of literary analysis to bring insights to the science-and-religion field. This thesis is composed of four parts. Part one introduces and maps the subfield of science-religion-and-literature by defining and, at times, coining key terms and phrases, providing an overview of method within the larger science-and-religion field, and mapping the proposed subfield by reviewing exemplary studies. Part two examines the use of literary theory at the intersection of literature with society, religion, and science. Part three portrays a use of particular literary texts (the case study: Margaret Atwood’s MaddAddam trilogy) that seeks to bring insight to the science-and-religion field. The study concludes in part four by assessing various methods that have been portrayed throughout this thesis, articulating the benefits of studying literature within the science-and-religion field, and suggesting further directions of research. v Acknowledgements Any project spanning hundreds of pages and multiple years cannot be completed alone.     News and Notices SCIENCE‐SPIRIRTUALITY Templeton Prize The winner of the 2001 Templeton Prize for Progress in Religion is The Revd Canon Dr Arthur Peacocke of Oxford University. As a physical biochemist specialising in biological macromolecules, Dr Peacocke pioneered early research into the structure of DNA, showing that the chains in the molecule are not branched but form a double helix. In 1971, the one‐ time agnostic became an Anglican priest. The only Oxford University Theology faculty member to hold both a Doctor of Science and a Doctor of Divinity degree, Dr Peacocke is a strong proponent of "critical realism," holding that both science and theology aim to depict reality and must be subject to scrutiny, while recognising their creative interaction. Created by global investor and philanthropist Sir John Templeton in 1972, each year the Templeton Prize acknowledges a living person who has shown extraordinary originality in advancing humanity's understanding of God and the role of spirituality in people's lives. Sir John has sought to honour progress in religion just as the Nobel Prizes recognise advances in economics, medicine, and chemistry. Currently valued at £700,000 sterling, the Prize represents the world's largest annual monetary award given to an individual and is always set at a level that exceeds that of the Nobels. Dr Peacocke joins an illustrious group of professional scientists who have won the Templeton Prize: last year's winner, Freeman Dyson, a physicist whose futuristic views have consistently called for the reconciliation of technology and social justice; physicist and theologian Ian Barbour in 1999; astrophysicist Paul Davies in 1995; physicist Carl Friedrich von Weizsäcker in 1989; and Benedictine monk and professor of astrophysics Stanley Jaki in 1987.

    Virtual Knights and Synthetic Worlds: Jediism in Second Life Helen Farley Under a pink sky dominated by the giant red planet Yavin, a seeker, head bowed, climbs the steep stairs to the great stone temple. He walks to the front, falling to one knee before the Jedi Master. No words are exchanged but in those moments the seeker pledges to begin the long journey from Padawan to Jedi Knight (see Lukas 2015). This is not a scene from one of the Star Wars movies, this is a ritual enacted many times over, on the small moon of Yavin IV recreated in the Second Life universe. Seekers from far and wide are drawn here to begin their spiritual quest or to dip a toe into another way of being. The experience is direct, and the seeker forges the path. Introduction Almost every manifestation of religion finds expression in the virtual world of Second Life. Established religions have a presence; for example, Epiphany Cathedral is home to Anglicans in the virtual world (Hutchings 2011). Geographically dispersed adherents gather for communion, Bible study and regular services. Those manifestations of the numinous bordering on religion, depending on the definition employed, can be found in every corner. Masonic temples abound and all the paraphernalia required for the mysterious rituals of Freemasonry can be bought from the Second Life Marketplace (Farley 2010). There are some religions that only find expression in this virtual space. There are all manner of temples, churches, sacred grottoes, simulated stone circles and the opportunity for religious pilgrimage. Some of these expressions can be seen as virtual missionary activity, taking religion to a new frontier.

    THE NEW CONSCIOUSNESS MOVEMENT Mark Hayes The new consciousness movement is an enormously complex phenomenon. Indeed, the term 'movement' is perhaps inappropriate to describe it for it is more a ragged series of convergences in research among disciplines as diverse as physics, biology, psychology, ociology and religion, more a profound respon e on a wide eries of levels to a deep disillusionment with science and technology. Dialectic tensions, some com menta tors argue, are shaping a struggle between 'mechanists', those holding to the rigid scientific world view of'nothing-buttery', and 'mystics', people whom Koestler calls 'peeping toms at the keyhole of eternity'.! One of the two leading commentators and polemicists of the movement, William Irwin Thompson, compares what he sees as happening to the Reformation, and other , more pessimistic, compare it to the onset of the Dark Ages. Thompson, an historian who once taught at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, explains why religion is central to the movement: "Americans have to go to the 'New Religion because our old religions of Catholic, Protestant and Jew can only give us the institutional culture of religion and not the experience of God . .... if is pointless now to argue over whose fault it was. We now have to accept the fact that we live in a time when the esoteric traditions of Christianity are dead and the esoteric traditions of western science are fast dying, so that the whole light of the civilisation that came out of Christian Europe is flickering toward a new age of darkness".2 Theodore Roszak echoes Thompson's feelings, and adds a powerful criticism of Christianity, common throughout the movement: "Nothing is guaranteed about our trek into the Aquarian frontier, least of all the capacity for regaining our spiritural balance without many trial and hazardous error.

Ernst Bloch1 (2009: 122) The consideration of religion, especially when entwined with technology, has as Bloch suggests, spawned much heresy, and this paper considers the constructive heresies of Jean Baudrillard, as well as Ernst Bloch, Byung-Chul Han, and Peter Sloterdijk. Whether it be it be oral, notches on bone, clay engraving, handwritten scrolls, codices, illuminated manuscripts, print books, audio recordings, or more recently, software and mobile applications, religion has been continually mediated by technologies to various degrees. The recent coupling of the terms digital and religion, brought about by the merging of the digital, internet, and forms of religiosity, attests to this. Indeed, religion itself might often be regarded as mediation between god(s) and man, the heaven and earth, the sacred and the profane, and so forth. This paper discusses the notion of digital religion and attendant theoretical approaches. It indicates how Baudrillard’s work might contribute to this configuration and methodology with a consideration of the academic field of ‘digital religion’ and ideas from Marshall McLuhan. Against a somewhat utopian vision and drive, the poverty of a networked digital religion is advanced. The possibility that a form of religion somewhat influenced the advancement of the internet is outlined with focus on Unitarianism and Tim Berners-Lee. Attention turns to Baudrillardian motifs and notions of potlatch, defiance, and challenge as they might inform the developments of certain elements of religion.
