12 THE CHRONICLE | tbeboca.org Belonging

As humans, we need to belong – to one another, to friends and families, to our culture and country, to our world. Belonging is fundamental to our sense of happiness and well-being. We reached out to four of our families, and asked them to describe what makes them feel like they belong at Temple Beth El and what advice they would give to others who would like to strengthen their connection. Mara and Michael Shapiro, Jenna, Scott and Daniel I think of Temple Beth El as a warm, welcoming engagement, is, of course, wonderful. However, place; a second home. I am especially when I truly needed the Temple in the aftermath appreciative for the connection now as an empty of my mother’s tragic, unexpected passing, I was nester when I no longer have the weekly routine incredibly grateful. Everyone was very supportive of dropping my kids off for religious school, Bar/ and caring when my family most needed it. Bat Mitzvah lessons and youth engagement. I can see where some people at my stage of life Sisterhood and Temple events give me the might think to drop their Temple membership opportunity to catch up with friends and familiar now that the kids have grown up and moved faces that I used to see on a regular basis. on, but in reality, this might be the best time Knowing that Beth El is always there in the to become more involved and form a deeper good times; when my kids were becoming connection with all that Temple Beth El offers. Bar/Bat Mitzvah and our daughter’s recent — Mara Shapiro

July/August 2019 | THE CHRONICLE 13 Larry and Edie Gise Edie and I have been members since 2014, and the clergy, staff and the entire membership have become our family. When we enter the temple campus, a sense of serenity envelops us. I have been a proud member of the social action and religious action committees, as well as a coordinator of Family Promise working with homeless families. In addition, I have been an usher at Friday night services as part of my involvement with the Brotherhood, and Edie sings in the choir. I would say to all members of the congregation that getting involved is so rewarding. Older members have so many wonderful programs such as Lunch and Learn and younger families have the best education for their children. As the children continue to learn and be involved with their Jewish heritage, Temple Beth El will help maintain a focus on spirituality. Edie and I thank GOD every day for Rachel and Craig Temple Beth El. Rubinstein, Emma — Larry Gise and Jack There is an atmosphere of warmth and welcoming created by the congregants and clergy at Temple Beth El that is palpable and not readily found at other synagogues. Our family has been involved in numerous ways, including sitting on various committees for both the congregation at large and the religious school, singing in both youth and adult choirs, and attending services and social action activities. As the saying goes, “you’ve gotta be in it to win it.” There are many different opportunities at TBE to get involved. Come to services, volunteer your time and skills, join a chavurah. There is a place for everyone. You will get out so much more than what you invest. Walking onto the temple campus, there is a mixture of emotions; pride, nostalgia, and excitement. Now, more than ever, it is critical that we do everything within our power to strengthen and perpetuate our Judaism, not only to prepare our children for their future leadership, but to honor and preserve the legacy of those upon whose shoulders we stand. — Craig Rubenstein
