2 | Transforming Lives Through Technology TOGETHER Leadership Perspective

That is the key word in the Togetitle of this Honort Rollher. of Donors and the objective of the IEEE Foundation - Transforming Lives through Technology Together. We, as a community, have long been about the business of transforming lives through technology. What is unique about this concept is the realization of the impact we can achieve as Leah H. Jamieson Karen A. Galuchie a community working in concert. This page traditionally highlights achievements and deserved recognition for those responsible. While there was no shortage of such achievements in 2014, we prefer to focus attention on the BOLD path ahead as we all join together to make our envisioned future become a reality. This is an exciting time to be a member of IEEE. Through enhanced collaboration, new opportunities for member engagement, dedicated strategic planning, and commitment to leveraging technologies we are poised to reimagine the future of IEEE. As 2015 IEEE President and CEO Howard Michel said in the March 2015 issue of The Institute, “For IEEE to remain a touchstone organization for engineers and technolo- gists, it must evolve. That evolution, while swift, cannot be haphazard. Instead, there must be a compre- hensive vision of what IEEE is as a community today and what we wish to be in the future.” President Michel concludes his remarks by requesting input from all IEEE members; we urge you to provide yours. Just as IEEE looks to the future, so does the IEEE Foundation. Through the investment in IEEE Signature Programs, we feature components of our vision that are actively transforming lives through technology. These Signature Programs are: • PES Scholarship Plus Initiative - guiding undergraduate students to careers in power • IEEE Smart Village - eradicating darkness in remote areas of the globe • EPICS in IEEE - enhancing education through the pursuit of community service • REACH - creating awareness of the rich history of engineering These programs, together with our Grants Program and the programs on which our legacy has been founded, create a comprehensive portfolio of opportunities for impact. The IEEE member, intent on philan- thropy, has a ready list of options available through the initiatives of the IEEE Foundation. This publication highlights our initiatives, those who benefit from them, and our dedicated donors who make it all possible. Your philanthropy drives the mission of the IEEE Foundation, enables its important work to continue, and prepares us for a BOLD future. On behalf of the IEEE Foundation, its Board of Directors, volunteers and staff, and the people we serve all around the globe, we thank you for your participation and generosity. This publication documents your generosity and the outcomes of your generosity, and rightly recognizes you and your fellow donors for your commitment. As a community we bring the promise of technol- ogy – and the knowledge to use it – to those in need worldwide. Indeed we are transforming lives through technology – TOGETHER. Gratefully,

Leah H. Jamieson Karen A. Galuchie IEEE Foundation President IEEE Foundation Executive Director

Keeping Engineers Educated on History With a degree in Engineering Physics, Barney Finn found his first professional job rewarding but somehow lacking a sense of fulfillment. This led him to obtain a PhD in History of Science, which he still feels would have made him a satisfied engineer; but instead he became curator of the Smithsonian Institution’s histori- cal electrical collections. His position brought him in contact with the nascent IEEE History Committee. The consequence of this acquaintance was a career-long association, highlighted by the establishment of the History Center in 1980. “The enthusiasm of the committee members, and ultimately the creation of the center, provided reassur- ance that history should be considered an important element in an engineer’s long-term education,” Name: Barney said, “I feel strongly that engineers should have exposure to the humanities, especially history.” Bernard (Barney) Finn The Bernard S. Finn IEEE History Prize, funded in part by the IEEE Life Members Fund and administered Affiliation: by the Society for the History of Technology, was recently renamed from the IEEE Life Members Prize in Donor Electrical History. Barney says, “Nothing could have made me feel better about my commitment to these two groups than this great honor.” The prize is awarded annually to the author of the best published paper in the history of electrotechnology—power, electronics, telecommunications, and computer science. “The IEEE Foundation is a significant supporter of the History Center’s programs,” said Barney. “For this reason my modest financial contributions have given me great satisfaction.”

Giving Back to the Community The IEEE Foundation programs that really interest John are Engineering Projects in Community Service (EPICS in IEEE), the IEEE History Center, and the projects of the Life Members Committee. “Programs like EPICS in IEEE, where engineering is used to address community issues, are a good intersection of my inter- ests and desire to give back to the community. EPICS in IEEE not only assists in the support of developing community based solutions, it also facilitates a sense of life long civic engagement for participants, both very worthy outcomes.” John added, “I have always had an interest in history, so I’m glad to see the Foundation supporting the preserving of the history of technology and engineering.” Name: John T. Barr IV John feels that it is important to support the IEEE Foundation because, he said, “My parents instilled into me, Member by their example, the need for those with the means to support a variety of charitable programs. It seems Grade: logical to use a portion of my giving to support programs related to my work fields.” He added, “Supporting Life Fellow charitable activities and supporting those in need in your communities or elsewhere can be a very reward- Year Joined IEEE: ing activity.” John mentioned, “There are many worthy causes to give to and as a contributing IEEE member, 1969 knowing that the IEEE Foundation is enabling these kinds of programs is an additional reward.

40 | Transforming Lives Through Technology TOGETHER What Motivates Doers and Donors In 2014, Eric Schmidt received the IEEE Founders Medal “for transforming global access to information through his leadership and technical contributions.” Eric says, “I admire human intelligence, the drive to understand and improve, and the informed confidence that there is a better way.” Eric donated the cash prize honorarium he received from the Founders Medal to the IEEE Foundation Fund. “The IEEE Foundation supports programs which focus on innovation that creates meaningful social impact,” Eric says. “The engineering across IEEE has improved the quality of life. Being able to advance and acceler- ate that improvement is a joy for us. I believe that fifty years from now the greatest technological benefits Name: to humanity will come from ideas and technologies not yet imagined.” Eric Schmidt Eric believes it is important for IEEE members to support the IEEE Foundation. “Great cathedrals were built Member by many hands. We must all do our part. Perhaps that is a large or small donation, perhaps it is editing Grade: Member journals, or working with students,” he says. “Most important is respecting the knowledge you have been Joined IEEE: given by working in some way to help others gain knowledge. This sense of continuity is what motivates 2012 doers and donors throughout IEEE to advance the professions and innovations of technology.” Eric hopes that other leaders in the technology industry will see the wisdom of investing in the very people and institu- tions that are building the future.

Supporting the Future of Power Systems Mark Lauby says, “I appreciate the IEEE Foundation’s devotion to recognizing those who have contributed to engineering and society and its commitment to support aspiring technical leaders.” He believes “without the IEEE Foundation, it would be difficult to recognize the industry leaders or to make opportunities available to those looking for engineering direction. IEEE creates an infrastructure to support engineering.” “IEEE, through the members and professional staff, provides many learning opportunities and much inspira- tion. The benefits are highly leveraged compared to the costs. The Foundation provides an opportunity to recognize this leverage and a vehicle to support engineering excellence,” Mark said. Mark has had a lifelong commitment to the electric power industry and, in 2014, he received the IEEE PES Name: Roy Billinton Power System Reliability Award from IEEE Power & Energy Society (PES), an award to recognize Mark G. Lauby outstanding individuals for their contributions to the reliability of electric power systems. He then donated the Member Grade: cash prize from the award back to the Roy Billinton Power System Reliability Award Fund. Mark also continu- Fellow ously supports the IEEE PES Prabha S. Kundur Power System Dynamics and Control Award, an award that Joined IEEE: recognizes outstanding contributions to the understanding and control of the dynamics of power systems. 1980 Mark originally joined IEEE as it was the premier organization for Electrical Engineers and the IEEE Power & Energy Society. He is most interested in IEEE Committees, Subcommittees, and Working Groups devoted to bringing industry subject matter experts together to address complex issues affecting the bulk power system.
