IEEE Hyderabad Section has over 4066 members, it is represented by 8 Chapter and 16 Technical Societies, 3 Subsections and 3 Affinity Groups, 52 Student Branches, 68 Student Branch Chapters, Section Volunteers were instrumental in collectively organizing 1479 Technical, Professional, Non- technical, Humanitarian and Administrative Events. These events covered over 173856 attendees in 2020. This demonstrates IEEE Hyderabad Section Leadership commitment to make it one of the most vibrant sections in this Region. The Section has under its fold, three subsections – Vizag Bay, Guntur, and Ananthapuramu. Vizag Bay Subsection is elevated to Section on February 15, 2020. Some of the Key Section initiatives include: a. Section is leveraging MOOC Based Skill Connect Program and launched modules on Java Programming on Continuous education and on-demand learning https://ieeeskillconnect.in/. b. Section carrying out Special Interest Groups to follow key technology trends and industry driven needs: IoT under CAS/EDS and Quantum Computing under Computer Society Chapters. c. Section has pioneered in Setting up IEEE P1451 Interoperability Lab and delivered the demo work at IECON 2020 session on a working model prototype d. Section has supported 392 events with overall 8.5 Lacs INR of funding. e. Hyderabad supported Vizag Bay subsection elevation to Vizag Bay evolving as a full section in 2020 f. Section has launched http://www.ieeecovidmove.in website in collaboration with IEEE Bangalore Section and IEEE India Council to generate and create awareness programs. Supported two hackathons and funded the initiative with 50000 INR and also supported CoVID Move projects.

Technical Co-sponsorship has been offered to • SEFET: International Conference on Sustainable Energy and Future Electric Transportation (http://www.sefet.griet.ac.in/) • Sponsored Jointly with IEEE Bangalore and IEEE Kerala Section - ComSoc initiated annual event Graduate Congress: Graduate Thesis Evaluation in 7 minutes (GraTE-7)

Conference and Special Events • IEEE HydCon 2020 : International Conference on Engineering in 4 th Industrial Revolution (EI 4.0) : IEEEHYDCON-2020 (IEEE Conference# 48903) is the biennial signature conference of IEEE Hyderabad Section, organized on 11-12 September 2020. • ICMLANT 2020 : International conference on Machine learning and Applied network technologies organised on 20-21 December 2020 (An unique intersection collaboration initiative between IEEE Hyderabad section and IEEE Salvador Section. • First IEEE India Council Subsections Conference 2020 (INDISCON 2020) was organized in association with IEEE Vizag Bay Sub-Section and GVP College of Engineering, Visakhapatnam. The theme of the conference is "SMART AND SUSTAINABLE SYSTEMS – DECADE AHEAD" • Funded the IEEE COVID19 projects jointly with 7 Sections under IEEE India Council initiative. Launched the https://ieeecovidmove.in website to build the awareness. • Funded multiple IEEE COVID Move Hackathon challenges • TECHNOASIS, a section-level online technical quiz competition which aims to provide a platform for the students to compete and showcase their mastery on the fundamentals in different areas of engineering. • IEEE Region 10 Industry forum at IEEE HYDCON 2020. This was very well received and attended by top IEEE Leadership including IEEE President, Region 10 director and many other IEEE Regional and MGA level leaders. • Supported IEEE Reaching locals initiative and organized IEEE Membership benefits activities in several local languages • Organised several Membership development webinars in collaboration with IEEE India council and IEEE Region 10 membership development committee.

Student Congress Events • All Hyderabad Section Computer Society Student Congress 2020 (AHCSSC 2020) with a theme on AI, Digital Reality and Robotics- AHCSSC 2020 is a flagship Congress driven by Computer Society Chapter with a theme AI, Digital Reality and Robotics In January 2020 at Anurag Group of Institutions. This was the Third edition of the congress covering the lectures on Artificial Intelligence, Digital Reality and Robotics. This congress enabled Computer Society Student Branch members to interact and network with each other to gain insights on Technology Trends influencing and changing the direction of the World. • 1st All Hyderabad Section Women in Engineering Section Student Congress(AHWIESC) was organized • IEEE Subsection Student Congress Organized in o IEEE Vizag Bay Subsection o IEEE Guntur Subsection o IEEE Anantapuramu Subsection • Section Student Congress 2020 with a theme “Use of Digital Technology during Pandemic Situatoin”, this has been attended by over 220 Students from Hyderabad Section Student Branches

Seasonal Schools • HyWIT – Hyderabad Workshops on Information Theory - Organized by ComSoc/SPS Joint Chapter HyWIT is a workshop series on coding and information theory, communications and signal processing conducted by Joint Chapter of Communications and Signal Processing Society of IEEE Hyderabad Section, IIIT Hyderabad and IIT Hyderabad. HyWIT2020 was organized at IIT Hyderabad from 14 September 2020 – 2nd October, 2020 in virtual mode. • IEEE SPS Virtual Summer School on Internet of Things for Biomedical and Healthcare Applications was held from 28th December -31st December 2020 in association with IEEE Hyderabad section , IEEE signal processing society and IEEE WIE AG Hyderabad Section and was hosted at VNR Vignana Jyothi Institute of Engineering and Technology.

Distinguished Lecturer Events The Section had a Distinguished Lecture event includes: • Virtual Distinguished Lecture On “Machine Learning for Analytics Architecture: AI to Design AI”, by Dr Niklaus Emil organized by CAS/EDS Joint Chapter • Virtual Distinguished Lecuture on “Evolutionary Mobile Robots Using Computational Intelligence Techniques" By Chia-Feng Juang National Chung Hsing University, Taiwan organized by CIS/GRSS Joint Chapter

Major Chapter Activities

There is a total of sixteen (16) societies represented in a total of eight (8) chapters and joint chapters in Hyderabad Section. In addition, the membership of the Section extends into Societies not represented by a Chapter or Joint Chapter – in all, forty-five (45) Societies have members in Hyderabad Section. We are happy to note that 8 chapters and joint chapters have exceeded the minimum number of technical meetings required each year. Some of the major activities include 1. AHCSSC 2020: Computer Society chapter conducted All Hyderabad Section Student Congress 2020 with a theme of Artificial Intelligence, Digital Reality and Robotics 2. 1ST ALL HYDERABAD SECTION WOMEN IN ENGINEERING SECTION STUDENT CONGRESS(AHWIESC) with a theme “Innovate for change” 3. Computer Society Chapter conducted nearly 60 events and focused on AHCSSC 2020, Innovation, Hackathons, Coding Contests, AI Trends, Computer Vision, Design Thinking, Speech Recognition, Collabratec. Strategic Marketing and Unlock 14.0 Coding 4. Education Society Chapter conducted nearly 54 events and focused on Low Cost Assistive Technology, Panel on “Work from home and its challenges”, IEEE Resources and EA opportunities, Digital Parenting, Research and Technical paper writing, Power of Questions, Latex Workshops and Digital Pedagogy for Asynchronous and synchronous Learning Applications 5. TEMS Chapter conducted 12 events and focussed on Innovation and Design Thinking, Agile Leadership, Social Media to build business, Lockdown – Adversity or Opportunity, Innovation Ecosystem in India, Leading at Scale – Managing Priorities in a complex world and Agile Promotes Innovation 6. CAS/EDS Joint Chapter conducted 9 events and focused on AI to Design AI. Analog IC Design, Chip Chat and VLSI 7. CIS/GRSS Joint Chapter conducted 17 events and focused on Dynamic Multi-Objective Optimization, AI and Cyber Security, Artificial Satellite Technology, Soft Computing, Blockchain, Open Source CloudStack, John McCarthy Memorial Lecture 8. Section driven Professional Activities included a Education program on “How to create Professional Resume” 12. HAC and SIGHT Standing committee was able to get 8000 USD grants to execute proposals on a. Tele-Health Monitoring System in Rural Areas through Primary Health Center using IOT for COVID-19. (File No. 20-COV-08) Under HAC & SIGHT Special Call for Proposals related to COVID-19 - 1073 USD b. Automatic Collection and Disposal of Garbage from Rural Areas – 150 USD c. Smart Non-Contact Thermometer for Covid-19 Pandemic – 4770 USD. under HAC & SIGHT Special Call for Proposals related to COVID-19 13. Mentorship Standing Committee was able to drive Virtual Internship program and Online Skill Connect Programs. 14. Educational Activities conducted 2 events on Selecting a right Project and completing in right time, Stages of Project / Product development 15. Conference Committee conducted Awareness of IEEE Conference Organization Requirements and Panel Discussion

Life Members Affinity Group conducted 5 events and focused their events on Human Vs Machine Intelligence – Architectural Mismatch, Emerging Trends in Electrical Power System Operation and Control Including High Penetration of Wind Power 2. Young Professionals Affinity Group conducted 14 events and they were instrumental in IEEE Covid Move Hackathons and Under #LockDownDiaries theme, they organized Fireside Chat and Webinar Series on YP Sailing through Pandemic, Is Digital Education a new Reality, Industry Phase Shift and Robotics and AI platform 4. Student Activities Committee conducted over 70 events covering programs around Section Student Congress and Subsection Student Congress, Hackathons, Code-a-thons, Collabro Collaquy, IEEExtreme 14.0 – Unlock 14.0 based contests and sessions, Technical competitions, Patent your Inventions and Supported Telangana’s biggest ever Online Hackathon

• Summary (as per submitted L50) In summary, the Section received rebates/grants/receipts of Rs 65,86,691 (Rupees Sixty Five Lakhs Eighty Six Thousand Six Hundred and Ninety One only) and incurred expenditure totalling Rs 55,16,530 (over Rupees Fifty Five Lakhs Sixteen Thousand and Five Hundred and Thirty only). IEEE Hyderabad Section has surplus of Rs. 10,70,161 (Rupees Ten Lakhs Seventy Thousand and One Hundred and Sixty One Only). This has been added to Section Reserves. The Section Financial Report is filed via Net Suite and through proper channels.

B.1 Membership Development Activities

• Total number of active members in the past 3 years.

Over the past three years, the Section has seen a steady increase in higher grade membership while also growing overall membership. • Partial membership was moved to the IEEE Vizag bay section after the formation of IEEE Vizag bay Section which was earlier a subsection of IEEE Hyderabad Section. So the membership numbers look low, actually its increased after the section bifurcation. Also the effect of Covid 19 is reflected in the figures because new student members were unable to go for half yearly memberships as colleges were closed.

12 • Summary and evidence of work done to improve the value of membership, which leads to retention and growth of members

Section Membership has grown after we have appointed a Chair-membership activity. This is visible in the growth of professional members. As part of Section Future Directions Committee recommendations, it has been suggested to hold activities targeted specifically towards each segment, instead of the one size fits all approach currently prevalent. Enough awareness has been created among all the chapters and affinity groups. This has led to brand new programs of “Research Forums” that are being conducted specifically for GSMs. Hot topics workshops have been conducted that are members only, thus highlighting the benefit of memberships. Chair Membership distributed chapter specific presentations to each chapter so they can independently speak from the ppt at their events. 2020 plans including holding a special flagship events, formation of Life Members Affinity Group, focus on improving the communication to the members from Section, Chapters and Affinity Groups. Section was focusing to build a social relationship between members and further driving the focus to start the IEEE Mentorship program to students through Senior Members, drive Entrepreneurship and Start-up activities. There was a constant focus for Special Interest Groups to drive the propagation of trends and how it impacts societies, awareness session was conducted for the same. IEEE Hyderabad Section continuous efforts was to demonstrate Value of IEEE programs and the breadth of knowledge with exposure given. This Value demonstration really made the difference in increasing the membership voluntarily. Membership development is perceived as a lateral activity under part of every society a nd affinity group therefore all activities have been merged as part of the organizational unit conducting the event. No L31 was filed separately for membership activities. No special budget head was assigned.

• Total number of Chapters in the Section There is a total of sixteen (16) societies represented in a total of eight (8) chapters and joint chapters in Hyderabad Section. In addition, the membership of the Section extends into Societies not represented by a Chapter or Joint Chapter – in all, thirty-nine (39) Societies have members in Hyderabad Section. We are happy to note that 8 chapters and joint chapters have exceeded the minimum number of technical meetings required each year.

There were NO new Chapters formed in 2020. However, IEEE Hyderabad Section was instrumental in filing the petition for Robotics Automation Society and IEEE Sensors council which were approved in 2021.

Section has invested in launching the MOOC Based Skill Connect Program and launched portal to drive Continuous education and on-demand learning https://ieeeskillconnect.in/. Skill Connect Programme Hyderabad Section conducted the continued Skill Connect programme initiatives for building competence, nurturing student and increasing employability in engineering students with the following features and highlights. • Builds Employable Skills in College Students • Builds Ability to Do / Apply Learning Effectively • Attempt to Bridge the Gap between Academia and Industry • Focus: Competence Building & ‘Learning to Learn’ ( rather than Knowledge alone as in traditional training ) Special Features • Largely Bridges Gap between Industry Expectations and College learning. • Orients thinking of students to apply and do what Industry expects, while in College. • Substantially enhances Soft aspects. Involvement in IEEE Standards Development Activities a. IEEE Hyderabad Section actively supported the efforts to develop the IEEE P1451-99 standard for IoT Harmonization. The Section is represented in this effort by PVS Maruthi Rao, Gopalakrishna Kuppa, N Venkatesh, and Arifuddin Sohel. Section has pioneered in Setting up IEEE P1451 Interoperability Lab and delivering the IECON 2020 session on a working model prototype. b. B.4 Students Activities

52 Student Branches and 68 Student Chapters of technical societies organized and reported events in 2020. They held 608 technical events, 188 professional events, 126 Non-Technical, 19 Humanitarian and 146 administrative events with overall Events count has 1087 with a total reach of 109,162 participants.

IEEE Hyderabad Section has an encouragingly large number of Student Branches, most of which are active and vibrant. In all, there are 102 student branches comprising over 2489 active student members. The complete list is reproduced below where Student members in the branch are available. For 2020, the Chair of the Students Activities Committee (SAC) was Sree Lakshmi G and the Section Student Representative was Saatwik. SAC was supported by Technical Societies under the governance of Section to support Student Activities and mentoring them to do contemporary and relevant programs which are beneficial to the Student community and help them in nurturing their career direction.

IEEE Hyderabad Section has formed Industrial relations Committee (IRC) in 2016 to bring synergy between Industry, academia, start-ups, Government and practicing professionals by bringing them together on to a common platform. Currently significant number of Execom members and volunteers are from various industry organizations and, the fact that many of our activities were conducted with help and sponsorship from various companies. E.g. Qualcomm, Wells Fargo, Redpine Signals, BioAxis, Microsoft, TCS, AMS, etc.

There are constant efforts made by IRC to derive the presence of industry experts and professionals into the events and programs to demonstrate value and improve membership growth and retention.

Special SEC Meeting for Section, Subsection, and Chapter Officer Orientation on February 2, 2020 The IEEE Hyderabad Section conducted a full SLATE meeting in which all the office bearers of all chapters, affinity groups and sub sections were invited. The meeting was held on February 2, 2020 at Plaza Hotel, Hyderabad. The Special SEC meeting brought all Section, Subsection, Chapter and AG Execom members together and was aimed at disseminating best practices in administering the various volunteer driven activities. C.2 Relationship with National and International Societies and Non-Government Organizations (NGO)

IEEE Hyderabad Section has a long-standing association with other professional societies such as Institution of Engineers, Institute of Electronics and Telecommunications Engineers, and Computer Society of India. Section SIGHT events were completed in collaboration withs several Rural health centres in villages. COVID relief Kits like digital thermometers, waste management etc were delivered to underserved local communities. The Events included:

79 1. Technical Support for COVID Hackathon organized by IEEE Pune Section and IEEE Bangalore Section 2. Working with several villages and understanding the need of specific covid relief products. Later they were developed and distributed to villages through their public representatives. This was very well appreciated.

This has significantly helped in making the reach of IEEE activities with cross collaboration of other entities and promote the culture of IEEE activities. In turn, demonstrated the value and influenced in opening new Student Branches, Student Chapters and grow our Membership Development.

C3. Collaboration with other IEEE Sections

IEEE Hyderabad Section was putting up constant efforts through CAS/EDS, ComSoc/SPS, CIS/GRSS, MTT/APS/EMC and Computer Society in promoting and jointly collaborating with other Sections within the country and outside to promote IEEE activities and doing Outreach programmes. Several events and hackathons like IEEE COVID Move was completed with several India sections like Pune, Uttar Pradesh, Bangalore and IEEE India council.

C.5 Best Practices of your Section (which you would like to share with other Sections for the benefits of members) IEEE Hyderabad Section has been continuously involved in introspecting on its own practices and guidelines and taken advantage of its very large volunteer base in evolving its practices. Some of the key practices instituted by the Section are: • Constitution of a Future Directions Committee to investigate the Section Vision, Mission, Goals, Objectives and methodologies to achieve them – further details are in Part D below. • Active involvement of Chapter Chairs and Subsection executives in Section deliberations – the monthly SEC meetings see large attendance. In addition, the SEC meetings are • open for online participation via WebEx. This way, Subsections and Chapter representatives who are unable to travel to the venue or wish to be spared of the additional time and effort that takes, have been able to attend the meetings via two-way video and audio streams. • Active participation of industry volunteers – almost all chapters have active volunteers in their Execom from the industry. • Encouragement to Chapters to institute an annual Flagship event • Inclusion of a brief IEEE pitch and membership development effort in each Chapter event • Effort to increase Society membership by providing preferential pricing, and in cases exclusive participation, to Society members in Chapter workshops • Annual face-to-face event involving all Section, Subsection, and Chapter committee members to reinforce processes, impart basic training on the use of vtools, and alignment to Section Vision and Mission

C.6 Problems anticipated and suggestions for solutions, if any IEEE Hyderabad Section has following suggestions to make things better • A problem the Section is facing is on a sizeable number of Student Branches that are dormant. To remedy this – our constant effort is to revive the Student Branch Chapters by working with respective schools. However, there are some colleges which are not operational, we are working with respective Schools. Additional volunteers have been placed in the Students Activities Committee with separate representatives from different geographical areas within the Section in order to better reach out to the Student Branches. This should be continuously monitored and revived. • A common problem is the retention of student members as regular members following their graduation. It is seen that the Value Proposition of IEEE membership is different for students Vs corporate employees. A remedy identified is to focus on industry participants in Section and Chapter events and provide for the needs of fresh entrants into the industry. • It is observed that some of the chapters were unable to raise funds and grants to drive programs. Section feels putting up some formal guidance tutorials in raising grants by every chapter and ensure they get adequate support in delivering innovative, social beneficial and humanitarian programmes to the community. • In the area of Conferences technically co-sponsored by the Section, there are several challenges faced, including that of maintaining the IEEE brand, quality and originality of the material, and obtaining enough sponsorship and attendance. The Section has instituted a Conference Committee to oversee acceptance of technical co-sponsorship of conferences and has laid out guidelines for the proper running of the conference including recommendations of the constitution of the Technical Programme Committee with participation of Section and Chapter volunteers.

IEEE Hyderabad Section instituted a Future Directions Committee (FDC) under the leadership of C Satish to examine, introspect, and put forth the Section’s Vision, Mission, Goals and Objectives that would guide all activities of the Section in the years to come. The FDC collected feedback from all members on their expectations from IEEE and their other views. A summary of the FDC report and the guidelines issued is reproduced below. A Time to Shape Our Future C. Satish, Chairman – FDC Committee It is necessary for any non-profit organization to look once in a decade or so to see what changes are needed in its strategy to fulfill its vision and mission. IEEE calls it strategic planning. For such a strategic planning, IEEE Hyderabad Section Executive Committee formed a Future Directions Committee (FDC). This committee consists of about 15 members & includes 5 Past Section Chairs, few younger members and few current SEC members. Mrs. Supriya of TCS is the committee’s facilitator. FDC’s Terms of Reference are • Prepare a Vision and Mission Statement. • Identify the Section’s Goals and priorities. • Suggest a strategy for realizing the above.

IEEE Hyderabad Vision and Mission is as follows: MISSION: TO PROVIDE A PLATFORM FOR KNOWLEDGE SHARING, NETWORKING, AND CAREER DEVELOPMENT TO THE LOCAL TECHNICAL COMMUNITY. VISION: TO BE AN ESSENTIAL RESOURCE FOR THE PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT IN SPECIFIC FIELDS OF INTEREST OF IEEE FOR THE BENEFIT OF MANKIND. In simple words Mission is the purpose. Vision is a picture of desired future. Goals, strategy and plans should emanate from the above and need to be in alignment with mission and vision by all the constituents of the Section like Chapters, AGs. Mission is the guiding star for all our plans and activities.

Goal 1: To Develop and Promote Industry Engagement To promote industry engagement Measures - • Driven through society, take feedback a s to desired events, along with industry conduct events in proximity • IEEE section should be one of the professional bodies that Govt. seeks advise from and be invited to be part of any Govt. initiatives e.g. Photonics Valley corporation. • Promote continuous education (certifications). • Change the branding to show that it is for industry only. • Promotion of awareness of relevant IEEE Standards to the industry (driven by the Chapters). • Promote to management of the companies to support IEEE involvement. • Collaboration with local bodies for training based on IEEE content and standards. • Let there be an IEEE Roadshow which goes to various industries– focused on IEEE, multiple components of various societies Increase success rate of entrepreneurship Measure – • Promoter technological mentoring to entrepreneurs • IRC will focus on TES with the help of the Chapters • • Collaborate with technology makers to provide the inputs on how to use their technology for business solutions.

Goal 2: To increase the effective volunteer base. Early bird discounts • Reach out membership development from industry- absence of industry • Target IEEE members who are not society members through awareness– they do not know benefits of society. • Ask what they want – by society, Identify topics broad topics that the professionals are interested and conduct programs in that – through survey etc. • Increased access to digital libraries specific to society • Facilitate change in organizational culture in the organizations through petitions to regulatory bodies. E.g. DRDO – 25K provided for professional membership, so this is used in appraisals. • Chapter must organize one good conference of that society once in two years. • Promote society and events through social media. • Demo society membership at a physical location – IEEE Café • Recognition from local society chapter – volunteer or member. • Chapter Promotes society activities in the Student branch.

Goal 4: To Sustain membership of students even after their transitioning to full members Measure: current 25% retention… Target- 50% retention • Evangelize importance of being full member • More Student Transition & Elevation Program (STEP) events with measurable outcomes. • Promote membership afresh, not talk of “transition”. See benefits as any other professional membership. Focus only on increasing professional membership. As part of ongoing efforts to increase membership. • More contests like all India Student Project Contest– which is more like an Academia-Industry interaction. • Mentor network – needs to be publicized and strengthened • Evangelize IEEE membership among the industry • Faculty advisors and mentors have to be educated to promote • Challenge: Jump in member fees from ~$27 to ~$80. Focus on GSM (masters, or PhD students)

86 D.4. Business Plan for Sustainable Growth and Financial Stability.

IEEE Hyderabad Section promoting the VOLT for Volunteer Leadership both for academia and industry. Also focusing on Grants to drive high quality engaging programs with the participation of industry. This helps to enable sponsorship and make the entire channel of programs accessible for the entire community Concluding Remarks- The recommendations of Future Directions Committee are given to the Section Executive Committee and they were all honored to be implemented. The SEC will communicate them to 1. Section members and 2. Chapters, AGs and Subsections and start a dialogue with them through various channels like newsletter, web site and direct mail. The objective is to develop detailed measures, procedures, priorities to set up to reach the goals. The SEC will assign responsibilities for implementation. The main criterion for approving and continuing all proposals will hereafter be whether they satisfy the Sections mission. The SEC will monitor performance and results. Mission and vision statements are long term, but goals and measures can be modified and given up (where they don’t work) even in the short term.
